It's because of the para-social (or "para-romantic", as the other user described it) aspect. You're not just paying for the explicit photos and videos, but for the "interaction" that comes with it. And even though *_you_* may lack the ability to empathize with people you disagree with, that doesn't inherently mean that "there's no excuse" for their behavior. These people are so devoid of any intimacy in their lives that they're willing to pay for the semblance of it. The luxuries that you or I may be afforded in that regard are completely inaccessible to them. The original comment is spot on; this is a devastatingly sad situation all around.
