Thanks for the tips. I played as a kid on my high school team and had a two-handed backhand. Then I went several years without playing and got back into tennis as an adult. When I started playing again, I could no longer hit a two-handed backhand, so I have been using a one-handed backhand. I'm right-handed, and I think my problem is that I have trouble letting my left hand be the dominant hand with my swing. But I feel like my one-handed backhand limits my game, especially with high balls hit with a lot of pace. So I've decided to work on re-developing a two-handed backhand. This video is a good start!

Wow. This is an awesome instructional video. It feels awkward moving from a one handed backhand to two, but this tutorial makes me want to give it another GO. You're great at explaining the mechanics of the stroke.

I really try to push my students to go for continental because on the recreation level an eastern forehand grip on the double handed backhand just results in the players pulling the racket through the ball with the right arm and the left hand just passively hanging there. Not supporting the stroke in any way. Also it is very uncomfortable on the wrist and for most people it becomes very hard to apply topspin. You mostly even get accidental slices when it is combined with a late timing/preparation.

Absolutely agree. I'm not a big fan of the Eastern Fh as base hand for exactly the reasons you're listing!

I use a continental grip on my two hander, and have been using this method for over 40 years now. Before my surgeries I would literally hit over a thousand tennis balls a day off the ball machine. I would hit 500 backhands and 500 on the forehand side. The most difficult thing I had to relearn is to hit my strokes with more topspin, my shots are very flat. I am still playing with my Wilson profile 95 and I am going to be changing my racquets either to a Yonex, or Boabolet racquets. The profiles are little heavy but I love the way the racquets feel when I hit the ball. I got a chance to demo a few racquets recently and it was nice to hit with modern racquets. But I can blast the ball on returning serves with the Profiles. Great job on the video coach.

love the way you teach . very similar to mine. I do like to teach the two handed open stanced first as i feel it is easier for new players to get their hands close to teh ball and then hit up an across for spin and depth and height. (MTM Coach here) One thing you forgot to mention that almost all begginers do and it results in errors is not to use any wrists and instead use your hands and arms . I learned quite a bit from your videos.And you are very charismatic which I am sure helps you quite a bit with your students/. thank you !

If MTM stands for Oscar’s way of teaching then yes you start to learn backhand in open position and hands is using your wrist

Hi Meike, I love your video👍. My only question is that I noticed your left foot wasn’t actually in line with the balls when you were lining up the ball. It looked like the ball was in line with your right leg or front leg? Maybe I have misunderstood that part🧐
@MeikeBabelTennis
@MeikeBabelTennis Год назад
If we're talking about the back leg and saying "setting it behind the ball" it's just a rough measure.

Meike, I have a one-hander question. I tend to hold the grip with my index knuckle between one and two, and my heel pad between one and two. How do you hold your grip? My instructor wants me to get the index knuckle on top, right on one… Ciao, John

Your left foot can NEVER be behind the ball not in open or in closed stance . If you step in with your left foot behind the ball then the ball will hit your hip 🥴🥴 Also the tip of your racket is still pointing to the left at the end of your extension which will kill ALL racket head speed 🥴🥴just my opinion as a non professional player

I have always used a one-hander. If I decide to experiment with a two-hander, I am thinking a good drill would be to start hitting: (a) lefty forehands with left hand *choked* up on the racquet where it would normally be on a 2-hander. (b) maybe even some Continental grip *drive* backhands (not slice) with the "bottom" right hand -- where the right hand would normally be on a 2-hander. Is this a good drill? 🤔 Also noticed that women, for whatever reason, often come up to me and complement me on the one-hander. Say they find it attractive. Have no idea why women find the one-hander attractive (women never gush over a guy hitting a two-hander). And I'm not complaining. Just stating a fact.
