In the year 2000 Richard Armitage and Joseph Nye brought together a bipartisan group to develop a vision for the U.S.-Japan alliance before the presidential election, to serve as a roadmap for the relationship regardless of which party won. Since then, they have built on this tradition of bipartisanship in the U.S.-Japan relationship with reports in 2007, 2012, 2018, and 2020.
The strategic environment that the United States and Japan face today, and the urgency of action needed to address it, demands an even stronger call to action. Please join us for the release of the next iteration of this report: The U.S.-Japan Alliance in 2024: Toward an Integrated Alliance.

By watching this video, I`m convinced that Japan is expected to play a pivotal role to defend democracy and freedom in Asia Pacific region against hostile states. Though Japan`s understanding of democracy is quite different from the United States, those two nations share the same interest in Asia Pacific region. The United States, Japan and other democratic nations in Asia are facing constant and aggressive threats from China, North Korea and Russia. Those countries should beef up military cooperations as deterrence against military aggressiveness of three hostile states. One thing which I`m concerned about is that Prime Minister Kishida`s position is very vulnerable at home due to a series of political scandals, and he could not take a strong leadership. I would like to expect his successor would meet our expectation.

Violence is not required from Japan. Provisions and material. What is steel without a smith? Swords do not wield themselves. An exercise in trust. I would rather be beaten by a merciful friend than any enemy.

They welcomed me. Extended every courtesy. We Americans are like the ornament in an elaborate garden which does not belong. Only an expert can see that we sit quietly in our place, procured from us. Rare splendor, like an exotic token. Like nickel, silver, or steel. An Ironwood tree from Australia, it is not meant for you to understand. It is a private elegance we speak of, and mournfully never return home.
