The Ultimate Bang-for-Buck Racing Sim! My Gran Turismo 7 Setup

If there's one thing you should know about sim racing, it's that it's not a cheap hobby. After factoring in the cost of a wheel, pedals, and a cockpit, it can end up costing thousands of pounds just to get started - and that doesn't even include all the hardware required to actually run the game itself.
In this video, I’ll walk you through my sim racing setup, which I’ve carefully designed to enhance every aspect of my virtual driving experience, while staying within a sensible budget. If you wanted to check these products out for yourself, I’ve left links to everything in the description below.

Hey pals! I've had a lot of fun using this setup for the last year or so, but the time has finally come to say goodbye to the G29. I just posted a follow up video comparing the Logitech G Pro Wheel and the brand new Fanatec Gran Turismo DD Extreme - check it out here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eKk_14EyOiI.htmlsi=bGUFPbF0_4gNxU40

I'm glad I came across your video. I'm a retired Army veteran who lost my left leg in a training accident right after Desert Storm and my right leg is paralyzed. I love racing but doing it with a joystick sucks. I need something cheap that I can hook up my hand controls from my car (Gas & brake with left hand, steer with my right) and this setup looks perfect. Cheers!

You can adjust the amount of force from the wheel in controller settings in Gran turismo. It is only set at 50% by default so the g29 can give a surprising amount more force than before. I was considering changing my wheel too before I found my wheel was delivering half the force it could.

So are you talking about more feedback support from the road and car or the car will respond to you turning the wheel?
@chappy0690
@chappy0690 5 месяцев назад
There is a reason it's set at 50% if you set ffb to over 4 out of 10 you loose all road feeling on the g29 as it can't handle the harsh vibrations and washes all feeling out. Try setting it to 3 or 4 and turn sensitivity up to 8 or 9.

Suffer from VR motion sickness too, and recently got a tip that helped massively. Once you start feeling sick, it's too late, the key is to stop before you start feeling sick. Do 5, 10, 15 minute stints, whatever it is you can manage without feeling sick, and then stop. This supposedly allows your brain to experience VR without becoming sick, and allows you to adapt. Seems to be working for me, starting to be able to go a lot longer in VR without feeling sick.
@bakerfx4968
@bakerfx4968 2 месяца назад
Absolutely this. If you try and push through your brain will associate it all as a bad experience and make you want to avoid it in the future. I struggled my first week on the Quest 2 when we got it but after that it was fine. Starting with static games (beat saber etc) will help too, don’t jump right into a racing sim to get use to VR lol
@MrBeeeJay
@MrBeeeJay 2 месяца назад
The trick is not stopping. You have to get used to it. Once you are used to it you can drive for hours. 4 hours in VR racing are not uncommon for me. Racing in VR is also less hard then a shooter because less is moving. And yes once you drive in VR you don't go back. The elevation differences you can see in VR you don't get on screens. My first time on the Redbull Ring ... A totally different experience.
@bakerfx4968
@bakerfx4968 2 месяца назад
@@MrBeeeJay that may have worked for you but I think you’re in a very small minority of people. You clearly didn’t get to a bad enough point where you just couldn’t play anymore. Usually due to having to actually throw up. The majority of people absolutely should take it off for at least a few minutes whenever they start feeling uneasy

Great video, for the motion sickness try this out, place a fan in front of you in a way that your face receives a good amount of "wind" makes a world of difference. I guess it kinds of bridge a little of the gap of visual movement and body perception of movement.

1. I appreciate your minimalist taste for your interior decorating. 2. I have an Meta Quest 2 and I overcame my motion sickness by playing Rec Room. I took it slow with the movements and positioned my body to maintain balance and anticipate “movement” without my actual body moving. Sort of like a forward lunge position. It worked like a charm. No VR motion sickness at all anymore.

I borrowed an Oculus Rift and it actually improved my driving in Dirt 2.0. But it was a borrowed unit, which means I had to eventually give it back. After spending $10,000 CND on my triple screen PC Sim setup, I didn't want to go over board on a VR I would probably seldom use. So I got a used Acer Windows mixed reality for $50 CND. In all the use I have had between the Rift and the Acer, I have only had one dizzy experience in each. The Rift was probably due to lack of sleep, the Acer was spinning out and rolling backwards in a go-kart in Kart Kraft. Other than that, even though neither were very heavy units, just having them on your head for a long enough stretch does start making you feel pressure on your head. I normally can't race any longer than 2-3 hours max.

For PSVR2, I got bad motion sickness the first time I used it. So the next time that I tried it out I made sure to take my time during the setup process and also ensure that I had it properly on my head. There’s a sweet spot where everything is in focus, finding this spot resolved my issue. The blurred vision was causing my motion sickness. Now I use it daily with no issues and how immersive it is is truly insane.

I also had issues with motion sickness. Getting the perfect fit is worth the effort. Every time I put on the VR, I hit the PS button twice to go into the quick menu and adjust my pupil distance setting. This helped a bit, but the only thing that really helps is practice. I used to only be able to tolerate 5 minutes, but after playing daily, I'm able to handle hours at a time. It's worth the patience to experience to immersion. Thanks for the great video. I'll be purchasing this in the future.

Hi Jorge Powell, I had bought the PS5 and the VR2 and of course GT7. I also had a somewhat strange feeling at the beginning when I drove in VR. I noticed the following. If you drive a track without mountain and dome (vertical) but only horizontal tracks at the beginning, the effect is not so strong. You can adjust your body to it. Drive slowly and without running and only at the beginning to get the body used to it. The interesting thing is that when you go vertical, your body thinks you are falling (because it is downhill). To prevent this, you can in fact train the body on it. In the meantime I've been riding for almost 3 months and I don't have any effects anymore that my body sends out. It really works very well. Take a comparatively straight route! Not exactly the Nürburgring (green hell) at the beginning. That goes wrong! I find your video very well explained! I am also looking for a seat and a steering wheel. I have an old Logitech steering wheel, which unfortunately due to license reasons are no longer supported in GT7, which I personally do not find okay.

Thanks for this terrific guide as we enter Sim racing! One possible solution to your motion sickness challenge is one we use when fishing offshore: Wear a "baseball" style hat. The extended rim creates a level "false horizon" that stabilizes one's balance and seems to help prevent motion sickness and vertigo. Give it a try! And thanks again for sharing such excellent guidance!!!!

I bought an Audi leather seat at the junkyard and built up a base for it, the wheel and pedals. As an added bonus the seat was fully adjustable so was completely powered for multiple drivers. I think the seat cost a hundred bucks and the base another 50. Some other miscellaneous costs (like a 12v supply for the seat and casters for the chair) and I might have been in for $225 (plus the wheel which was more than that). Was a pretty awesome setup though compared to commercial chairs.

Motion sickness from VR can come from lag. If you experience even the slightest stutter when moving your head, or have a couple of frames drop while moving around, it can throw your equilibrium off. Most start to experience discomfort when below 120 frames per second. The lower you dip, the worse. I had a game freeze once while I was running around and it took all my willpower to get the Index off without throwing up.

@@JorgePowell Remember to never do VR on an empty stomach as well. You get used to VR over time. Here's also a weird tip: turn down the brightness of your VR headset to the lowest. This makes the motion-blur when turning your head fast disappear, and that can help greatly with motion sickness. The HDR introduces quite a bit of ghosting on this headset due to how HDR is implemented. Lowering the brightness lessens that in a huge way.

Psvr2 is better due to being in higher def, but I still can’t manage more than 5 - 10 mins without starting to feel it again in racing games. Thats a huge improvement on 10 seconds the first time round. Haven’t yet tried the travel sickness pills with PSVR2, but I’m going to give them another go!

VR Tips. The only real way to get over VR sickness it to use it enough to get "VR legs." I used to get VR motion sickness, but not anymore. I suggest easing into it over the course of 2 weeks or so. Start with a short, 5-10 min session and up the time each day as you get more comfortable. After a few weeks of use, assuming you stick with it, the motion sickness should be completely gone. I also suggest starting with games and experiences that are less intense at first. An example of this would be beat saber. Eventually you can move up to fast motion games with no problems.

Honestly, who the hell needs 20nm when this will hurt you when you get hit by another car with in game settings at 4 and wheel settings at only 45-55 dependant on the car. Pick the right wheel and your sorted for PC, Xbox and PS4/5. Too many others are geared to PC with add on options to make it viable with PS. Also ginger can help. LED lights: Can't recommend Govee enough. Their software is some of the best, if not the best, and it has a little camera you put on top of TV, and it matches the back LED colors with what's on the tv perfectly.

For VR I get motion sickness in “regular” VR games and can only play in short bursts. However GT7 VR is different - after a short initial break-in, I don’t feel any motion effect and can literally play for hours. I think it’s due to the more natural brain-eye-motion we get used to when driving a car in real life. PSVR2 is transformative for GT7

i am a bigger buy too and I have been wanting a better chair, i'll look into this. i also had motion sickness issues, i started real slow. picked a car that was convertible (i think i used a BAC?) and went to a track that was pretty flat (le mans?) and would spend about 5 minutes just driving fairly slow to get a feel for things until i felt the very beginnings of being disoriented and then i took it off. within a week i was able to complete a lap, within two weeks i was doing short races. within a month i was racing anything 15 minutes at a time. eventually i got into over 30 minute sessions. just have to find your body's pace and extend it at a rate that works for you

Fanatec and Moza have great direct drive entry level offerings. Give them a look. On motion sickness…for me it abated with time, but it was alway far less (or no existent) in a driving sim. Mostly because your body is fixed and there’s minimal head movement. Hope you can get passed it. VR is a treat with flying and driving. Great vid. Thx!

I also had motion sickness in games like RES evil 8 but not at all in sim racing games. Motion sickness is really a downer but more u play in VR u get used to VR and its not really a big issue after that. Also with the new VR headsets with better resolution and no graphical artifacts, smooth motion with steady FPS the immersion ist just over the top and i find it hard to play on flat screen nowdays.

First with PSV2, I cannot even drive more than 1 minutes. Later I drove a convertible in an oval track slowly. After a week or so, now I can racing in PSVR2 for hours. Sometimes still have trouble with road cars with soft suspensions. No issue with Gr.3 Gr.4 or cars that doesn't float.

You're missing a lot not having PSVR2 for GT7.I was very sensitive to motion sickness too but somehow PSVR2 have done something (which I don't know) that reduce motion sickness in GT7.Over time, you can eliminate motion sickness by getting use to VR. After my third session of GT7, I was immune to motion sickness. Now, I can play GT7 for 3h without any issue.

Hey - Nice vid! I always felt sick playing VR in 30FPS - The VR2 is 60FPS and I have not felt sick a single time! I was bummed for a long time because I thought it was me and not the FPS - Now I use it weekly! Im guessing you have upgraded both wheel and to VR2! If you haven’t, go buy right now

have a floor mat so you have a way to ground and center yourself have a fan blowing on you so you have a sense of direction start off with vr games with minimal movement, i recommended beatsaber or something like it and just do small sessions everyday, maybe lasting a little longer each time.

Lasik completely fixed my motion sickness in general. I wanted to play Destiny when it originally released and so I had read that Lasik can help. It more than helped, it's 100% gone. I can play ANY FPS now and I am assuming it'll be great for VR too. Hope this helps. Alternatively you could always just take motion sickness medicines.

For VR sickness you should try playing VR games where you only move when you move in real life, for example SuperHot VR. This will let you get used to VR, then you can jump into racing games. If you are not used to VR and you jump into games where you move in-game but are still in real-life you it will be overwhelming and you will get sick. Get used to VR first and then race.

If you're serious about racing and have the money: You need DOF H3 or P3 (this motion rig will remove motion sickness in VR) You need dd1 or dd2 to simulate real racing wheel w/ great force feedback You need a better headset than PS5 (get Pimax Crystal or 12K) You need motion compensation software when you're in VR (easy done) You need a powerful PC to run games to get at least 90fps to remove motion sickness You need to play Automobilista 2 (BEST VR racing game in the market) Total cost: Maybe around $10,000

Regarding the playseat, I used to have a Challenge and at 5’6” with a slightly shorter torso, I wasn’t able to get the wheel low enough without stretching my arms. I’m wondering if the Trophy can address a situation like this? // how adjustable is it? Thanks!

I thought the LED strip would be some shameless plug that would be pointless but then when you mentioned it’s hdmi 2.1 and has so many ports I was like “oh shit this is the real deal”. Thanks for recommending this. I’ve always wanted to try bias lighting for my late night gaming but didn’t want to sacrifice 2.1 features

Haha I’m glad at least one other person appreciates the support for HMDI 2.1 features! Hopefully the disclosure in the video set the record straight, but it’s a good product that works for my current needs - fingers crossed that other brands will release similar products soon 🤞🏼

If you haven't tried VR with this new setup then it might actually help you with your nausea. Most symptoms like this in VR are due to the brain not being convinced that the visuals match what the rest of the body is doing. Kinda like car sickness irl. The seating position, wheel & pedals of your new setup can help convince the mind and body that everything seems legit. The haptic feedback in the PSVR2 headset also helps. Like car sickness, for some it takes practice for the mind and body to understand what's going on. How long that takes is different for everyone. I pushed through the nausea on the previous PSVR1 so when I got the PSVR2 i didn't feel anything in GT7 other than fun and immersion.

Slowly build up your VR tolerance. This worked for me. Start by driving forward slowly, up to 5min or less. If you begin to feel sick at all. Stop. Come back later and try again. Before long I began to feel fine in those shorter bursts. I then was able to incrementally increase car speed and session duration. To where I can now do a whole longer play session without feeling sick. It took a couple weeks or so to get there. But I do think it’s worth the time and effort. VR sim racing is such a game changer. I race better with it.

My recommendation: T-GT2 with t-lcm on a next-level rigg, mounted on a big worden Board with 4 wheels to move it in any room I want. Take wheels with brakes, so the rigg doesn't move when ffb is punching in. Brg, rellik

I have a very similar setup including TV, wheel, but I have the challenge instead of trophy cockpit. How far do you have it away from your TV when playing GT7 and what view do you typically use?

I would just upgrade you wheel to the new Logitech wheel or the official GT Wheel, which is still a Logitech wheel Or just spend out on a Fanatic wheel for the PS. I still use my G29, Still a great wheel for those who like to race, from time to time, love the info video, awesome breakdown Sir!

This js the angle all sim seats should be at tbh. Helps with gravity. Takes strain off of your back etc. Also easier on the legs/feet. Def not a budget seat though at 5 to 600 dollars.

It might be weird, try put a standing fan in front of you while using VR headset. The wind that blows to your face (or body) will somehow help your brain to adapt with the motion sickness. I'm not sure if this will help other games else than racing sim.

Thanks for the video. It's probably not aimed at people like me who already have rigs but I enjoyed it nonetheless. On the topic of VR, I bought PVR2 purely for GT7 (I haven't played a single other game with it). First few times I used it I felt weird after about 15 minutes and had to take a break. But a few weeks ago we had to temporarily rearrange our living room and I couldn't use the rig in front of the projector screen where I usually play. The only way I could play was in a different part of the room on the VR. After about a week of playing GT7 every night solely in VR, I wasnt getting any notion sickness or weird feelings whatsoever. And now it's my default way to play GT7. So it may just be a case of easing yourself into it and you eventually break the back of it.
