The Ultimate Drill Press Build! Stick Welding Project. I've been wanting a nice powerful drill press for years and I finally have it! I picked up a cast iron drill press that I found on Marketplace for 30 dollars. I brought it into the workshop and cut it apart and modified it so it will work with a portable magnetic drill. Now I have 2 quality tools for the price of one. For this project I removed the drill head, shortened the drill post then stick welded a thick steel plate on top of the post for a solid surface for the mag drill. This thing is a beast! This is a great beginner DIY do it yourself metal fabrication and welding project that you can do to build up your collection of portable and useful quality tools.

The best videos are informative, practical - and fun. Of the many of Brandon's videos I've watched, I'd say he scores a 10 in all three categories. And although this one is two years old to the month, it is still timeless. Keep up the great work!

Interesting idea: if you need more offset from the post for a deep part, you could clamp a longer plate over the top plate so drill sticks out further past center of table below. Nice mod

Great tip! Plus the table rotates 360 degrees around the post. Because the top plate is flat without sides I can position the drill anywhere to align with the table.

Great idea! Couple of suggestions that might make it even better. To keep the mag drill in the same spot on the top plate weld some angle iron stops onto the top plate to align the front , sides and back of the mag drill so the mag drill always sits on the same spot on the top plate. Never have to line the mag drill up it always has the chuck centered over the hole in the work table. Also 3 in one oil is a lubricate and glad to see you used it on the rack and pinion lift. Old wood workers trick to keep rust off of the bare metal post and the work table is to use Johnson's Paste Wax on the bare metal to protect it. Wood workers use it on saws, table saw tops, etc., any bare metal surface. Really forward thinking on a true two in one tool.

Nice job Brandon - I too love to "marry" different old and new things to match my special needs! The Mag-drill is awesome. Before disassembling the old drillpress I'd use WD40 and let it sit overnight, most parts will come apart much easier. And I would disassemble it completely - take off the base-plate and you don't need to worry about the plastic ring, take it off, you can re-assemble the whole thing from the bottom. Doesn't your saw allow angled cuts? I always prefer sawing to grinding. IMHO grinding is for smoothing, not for removing a lot of material.
@BrandonLund
@BrandonLund 4 года назад
Thanks for commenting. The post seems pressed into the flange so I didn't mess with it. My cold cut saw cuts a few degrees beyond 45 and the angle on the gear was close to 60 so I just decided to grind it. Its completely hidden under the black collar also :)

Good project and will be a nice tool to have in the shop. FYI : most drill presses of that size the table will move all the way around the tube/ upright, that is why the rack has the angle on both ends. If you need to drill a hole at an angle you may need to move the table right or left to get things lined up right. Also if you remove the four bolts at the bottom of the tube at the base you should be able to take the tube out of the base, that way you can take it all apart when you need to. without cutting the top plate off the upright. But all in all as I said Nice work , you will enjoy having a mag drill every time you use it. Joe
@BrandonLund
@BrandonLund 4 года назад
Thanks Joe! You are spot on how the table works. I was wondering how that bottom flange held the tube. I figured it was either pressed or threaded but figured I wouldn't be able to loosen it so i left it alone. Thanks for watching and commenting! 🙂

I have that exact mag drill. 600.00 plus. Only 600 rpm, one speed, no reverse. The clamping force is quite adequate for drilling if you do not use much pressure on the handles. Otherwise you will disengage the mag base. I use this tool for drilling sideways and made a great stand for my needs. I like this drill but a larger drill press or even a drill-mill is much more suited and the mag-drill can sit on a shelf waiting to be used on an appropriate project. Just my thoughts since I have one. I will be getting a drill mill instead of a drill press.
@BrandonLund
@BrandonLund 4 года назад
Ive used a bunch of mag drills over the years. Material thickness and cleanliness play a big role in how well the magnet holds as does how sharp your cutters are. It might not be the perfect solution for everyone but where as i don't do milling operations it works perfect for me and i don't have to buy 2 dedicated tools to do 2 separate tasks.

👍it looks like you had the 4" cup brush, possibly 5",just so you know the 4's are usually rated for 8-8500 rpm and the 5's at 62-6500rpm and those size brushes are designed for the 7" grinders which generally turn at 8-8600rpm and by the looks of your grinder it's probably a 4 1/2" or a 5" that are generally rated at 11,500-13,000 rpm so you are spinning it a good bit faster than designed for which could cause big trouble,like spinning a wore down 7" disc rated for 8600rpm on a 13,000 rpm grinder and could be fatal, and besides the rpm difference the bigger wheels are bearing killers on small grinders..... good build.
@BrandonLund
@BrandonLund 4 года назад
Good call. I double checked, its the 5" rated at 6500. I'll be sure to mount it on my 7" next time. Thanks for the good info bud! Spinning at almost 2x the rated speed explains the high rotational torque.:)

Great idea for your drill press! Couple of points I'd like to make; anything below 10" do not have a crank handle lifting rack on the column. They're used on 10" drill presses and up. Also, you really shouldn't paint the drill press table. It's cast iron and should be left as bare metal. And finally, that ring that holds the top of the rack should be level all around the post so the table can swing around without binding.
@BrandonLund
@BrandonLund 10 месяцев назад
Thank you! I'm not sure why if it came with handle that it should be abandoned? I actually use mine constantly. I'm always adjusting mine up and down depending on what I'm drilling into. The platten rotates 360 degrees around the column and can be raised using the crank anywhere along the column. The mag drill can also be rotated to any position also. The platten is natural cast iron, not painted. Thanks for watching!

Will there be further improvements on the stand? You can give it a dovetail on the plate where the mag drill stand. You don't need to switch on the magnet if you are not using. In the current current setup, when you unplug the drill, there is a risk that the drill will fall off, if there is a dovetail, it is safe and you can still do a lot of things, such as tap your holes while unplug. 😃
@BrandonLund
@BrandonLund 4 года назад
The drill comes with an included strap for when its used overhead or horizontally. I just use the strap to keep it safely attached to the base. Im keeping it without any channels because the table swivels 360 degrees around the post. I don't want to limit myself if I make it so it can only be used in one position.

Damn Brandon, this is looking familiar. Almost exactly what I did for my BDS MAB485 mag drill.🤣🤣🤣I used the pulleys from the old drill press to build a small metal lathe after. Waste not want not👍🏻👍🏻 Love the way the volume was down during the chop saw cut. Dang they are great but incredibly noisy🤣🤣 That's the beauty of the twisted wire brushes. Less shrapnel Got a plastic bin underneath so the oil doesn't go anywhere and is easy to clean up

Great idea on reusing the pulleys! I thought about saving the assembly but the quill was sloppy so I tossed it out. I have been using this like crazy since it was built. Not a bad idea. I like the versatility of being able to remove the mag drill. I do however have to question the square and flatness of that plate. Chop saws rarely cut dead nuts straight and plate no matter how thick tends to distort/warp when welding a pipe in the center of them. I would level the table and put a good straight bit or rod in the chuck and check it for square to the table before you drill anything that has to be precise. Like a deep bottom tapped hole for example.
@BrandonLund
@BrandonLund 4 года назад
Thanks! To get the top plate flat I did basically what you mentioned. Because the table swivels left to right, that dimension wasn't overly critical. I had to level left to right then i simply matched the top plate so it ran parallel to it. The one dimension that was critical was the front to back angle because its not adjustable. I used a square against the table then squared the top plate against it. Once it was fully welded, I mounted the mag drill and chucked in a drill rod to check for square in both directions. I crossed my fingers hoping nothing warped. Everything checked out perfectly! As you mentioned, the cut was only going to be as accurate as the chop saw, which I had previously spent a considerable time ensuring it was perfectly true ;). All great points you made 😁

It’s nice when you can “pick up” equipment. You didn’t really have to go that far down. The chuck doesn’t have to kiss the table. You can have a separation of two , or even three inches. I block on my presses if I have to get real close. And why not remove the bottom base before you welded and then slide the ring and rack down, and then back up afterwards? You could use the full length of the column and rack. Why not cut the bevel on the saw? Looks like viewing through a welding helmet. The press looks weird, but cool. Sorry if I seem too critical today Brandon.
@BrandonLund
@BrandonLund 4 года назад
Probably a 1000 ways to do it. I chose this one. Having the chuck as you suggested would not have allowed me to use annular cutters. The drill press has the same exact travel as it did prior to cutting it. I took unused material from the top of the post and the spline. My chop saw cuts at a maximum of 48 degrees. The bevel on the spline was more than 60 so I chose to grind it. I literally made 2 cuts for this modification and welded a plate. I honestly dont see how it could be made any simpler. Sorry i ruffled your feathers.

When building things it might be wise to consider what happens in a worst event situation and so planned for the out of the ordinary such as a jammed drill bit in a workpiece what effect will that have with the mounting of that head unit being magnetic could it rip that off and go totally nuts??? I like to put foot switches on any machine that I can and I bet you could come up with a foot switch fabrication project!!
@BrandonLund
@BrandonLund Год назад
Already factored in bud. We use these upside down on bridgework with a lanyard. I can say with confidence this isn't coming off with a stuck bit. The only real issue I've seen is that it's possible you could leave the magnet energized for eternity unless you turned it off. I don't think it would be a problem but it might jack up the power bill.

@@BrandonLund I guess I worded that wrong. More like a collar to the flat plate then clamped to the upright portion. Not that it would change the use.

Thanks man! I've used a bunch of different mag drills over the years and they have a ton of power and torque. I cant wait to drill some big stuff with it. I just love how I now have 2 great tools for the price of 1. I can literally take it out into the field and back into the shop without needing a dedicated drill press and then a dedicated mag drill. Best of both worlds.

Great idea! Just an FYI... the mounting screws you used are actually S.H.C.S. (Socket Head Cap Screws) instead of Hex Head. Great work! The shelf idea you mentioned sounds great too. Can't have too much storage! Plus there's that thing called the "convenience factor". Lol.

Cool. But. I personally would add some clamps to the magnetic base. It's quite easy to lift the drill even in magnetic operation, especially if the drill is not sharp, then it will lift. Also, when the power is not on, i assume you won't have the base magnetic 24/7, so it can and will most likely happen that someone will accidentally hit the column and the mag drill will fly off of it. Just saying. But i have thought of doing something similar... :D :D
@BrandonLund
@BrandonLund 4 года назад
Thanks man! I dont leave the magnet energized when its not in use. I just used the safety strap that came with it to secure it to the plate. It doesnt slip at all.

Couldn't you have weld/bolt that top plate to the post so that the ring and the other attachment around the post be taken off, if it becomes necessary??
@BrandonLund
@BrandonLund 2 года назад
I could have but I felt this would work better.
@b-lopez394
@b-lopez394 3 года назад
Brandon Lund, Instead of welding the plate to the column, I think it would have been better if it was mounted like a collar clamp. Also if you want to use a large hole saw, the clearance between the chuck to the magnetic foot is not enough. Nice repurpose build though.
@BrandonLund
@BrandonLund 3 года назад
The chuck extends 4" below the plate it sits on so its only limitation is how large of a hole the motor is capable of turning. I have cored a 4" hole through 1/8" plate with it. There is 6" of space from the columns face to the chuck centerline.
@derekbryant6137
@derekbryant6137 4 года назад
Just an idea on that platform that the mag drill rests when it's in the stationary stand. Would it hurt anything to put a few tabs on it may be one on either side. One on the front. So that when the magnets not engaged it doesn't fall off by accidentally being bumped just an idea.
@BrandonLund
@BrandonLund 4 года назад
It comes with a safety strap in the event you are using it overhead or on its side and you loose power. I just use the strap to hold it to the plate.
@consaka1
@consaka1 4 года назад
I'd fix that old motor. Thing is basically an antique. The belt reduction is pretty serious.
@BrandonLund
@BrandonLund 4 года назад
So I did some digging into it. There is a centrifugal mechanism at the end the motor with springs attached to it. Once the motor hits a certain RPM it expands. This seems to be the starter mechanism. Someone had jammed 2 pieces of rubber hose in the mechanism to force it to stay in the position that it would be in as though it were running. I'm not sure of why though?

why would you break the motor housing, when all it needed was a bearing? motors are handy to have around. sorry, it just broke my heart when i saw that.
@BrandonLund
@BrandonLund 4 года назад
It was a cheap import casting and motor not worth saving. The quill was loose and someone had also forced the centrifugal mechanism open in an attempt to bypass the starter winding which is another reason it wouldn't start. They had destroyed it beyond repair. If it had been a better candidate to salvage I would have...thats the premise of this channel...saving and reusing.

@lourias
@lourias 4 года назад
@@BrandonLund wow! Funny how simple things can be so discombobulated by somebody without experience or know-how.
@BrandonLund
@BrandonLund 4 года назад
I know right! I think what happened is the capacitor burned out so they tried to bypass it by wiring the centrifucal starter mechanism open hoping it would run. It had zero torque trying to start on the run windings. The quill was all sloppy also so maybe thats why they gave up trying to fix it.

I have seen you use the sand blaster a few times now. Where does all the glass bead material go? Do you have a way to contain it? I wouldn't think you want the ground glass material out in your yard? Thanks
@BrandonLund
@BrandonLund 2 года назад
@The Bearded Stork I just let it settle into the surrounding dirt. It's not sharp and can't cut you like you would think that glass could. You can actually jam your hand into a bag of glass without any chance of injury.

Can the drill be flipped “upwards” on the mag base? If you flipped it over I would think you could magnetize the base to your new top and get a lot more travel out of the drill. Just a thought.
