* The Ultimate FICUS BENJAMINA Care Guide (Weeping Fig Plant Care) *
Around here, we’re all big fans of the beautiful Ficus lyrata, or fiddle leaf fig! As a fan of all things ficus, I was excited to learn about the return of a tree you’ve probably seen before: Ficus benjamina, or the weeping fig.
You’ve probably seen these before, as they were extremely popular during the ’70s and ’80s (so much so that they’re often just called a ficus tree), but they’re making a comeback! They’re a beautiful plant to add to your collection.
Native to tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia and Australia, Ficus benjamina can reach up to 60 feet outdoors, but indoors they’re usually pruned to 3-6 feet. Their trunks can be braided together for a fun woven look, and these trees are also excellent at cleaning the air in your home.

Well as an experienced arborist from Australia where these figs are very common. Just a word of warning, the ficus benjamina's sap is VERY leathal. The white sap cause 2nd degree burns (major blistering of the skin) and you wont show any signs until a couple days later. So if youre going to trim limbs off this tree.. cover your skin with long sleeved shirt and thick gloves. Its a beautiful tree but it will bite you if youre not careful.

I only see that it can cause allergic reactions..."The sap of Ficus benjamina, while irritating, is not known to cause third-degree burns, which involve serious damage that extends through every layer of skin and can affect underlying tissues. The sap may cause skin irritation or an allergic reaction such as dermatitis, which typically includes symptoms like redness, swelling, and itching, but it does not cause the severe damage associated with third-degree burns. If someone experiences severe reactions or symptoms after contact with the plant, they should seek medical attention."

I was given a mealybug infested benjamina 6 months ago. I’ve gone through a couple bottles of neem spray and insecticidal soap. Cannot completely eradicate them. Too many little crevices for them to hide. But it is doing great otherwise. I love my weeping fig!

Hi, I had a huge ant problem in my plant pot so I took it into the shower and washed off the ants and the Honeydew that had collected on the leaves. I also used some ant poison to kill the ants but it looks like my tree didn’t the survive all of that. It’s been looking shriveled and hasn’t produced new leaves in weeks. Do you know if it’s possible that my tree may still be alive or should I get rid of it?
@FiddleLeafFigPlant
@FiddleLeafFigPlant 2 месяца назад
It could be the spray has affected the leaves. If there is sap inside the trunk / stems your plant can fully regrow. If it is dry inside, unfortunately it won't be able to regrow.

Hi Claire, thanks for the video. I just bought a ficus Benjamin from Costco. I live in Phoenix and currently has the plant outside under a patio so it can get bright light. The temp here in summer go up to +100. Is that too hot for them? My home might be too dark for it since I have sunscreens on all my windows, but can bring it inside if must. Also, you said they do not like to be moved around. I have a humidifier inside the house sitting in one spot so I will be moving this plant back and forth to this location - is that bad and will it trigger massive leaf drop? Thanks
@FiddleLeafFigPlant
@FiddleLeafFigPlant 2 года назад
Hi Tiffany, the temps outside may be too hot once it gets over 90+. If possible, keep it inside while the temps are too hot and if the light isn't adequate, a grow light can help!

Hi, I live in Texas and we have had temps up to 103. I have two of these weeping ficus trees in large pots, about 5’ tall (with the pot)on my patio but out of direct sun and they are growing well. It’s also humid here so that might help with the heat. I did bring them inside last winter for about 3 months because we got freezing temperatures. Some leaves from the inner branches fell off but it wasn’t too bad. They recovered once I put them back out. I love these trees. Good luck!

@FiddleLeafFigPlant

Yes, I recommend removing any non-soil medium (rocks / mesh / etc) and making sure the plant is inside a pot that has multiple drainage holes and fresh fast draining soil.

I got mine for my living room 3 weeks ago and just realised although there's lots of light, there's no point in my home that gets direct sunlight! I don't want to move it to the balcony as it gets very hot in summer, but freezing cold in summer, what to do?
@FiddleLeafFigPlant
@FiddleLeafFigPlant 2 месяца назад
It doesn't need direct sunlight however, it needs to be as close to your window as possible. It would be fine outside as well but would need to come in if the temperatures dropped into the low 60's / 50's.

Hi! I have a variagated weeping fig, and I’m not sure what is happening, but it continues to have little brown spots on the leaves outside, and they’re scattered it’s not on all of them. I am using spring water to water it I’m fertilizing it, I’m spraying it to increase humidity, and I am also watering it regularly but also letting it dry out before I water. Any ideas on why my leaves keep turning brown?

How this plant does on full sunlight?
@FiddleLeafFigPlant
@FiddleLeafFigPlant Месяц назад
Acclimating slowly to sun will be fine. But placing it in direct sun without acclimation can lead to sunburned leaves.

We inherited a Benjamina fr my mother-in-law and I can’t put it outside bc it gets sap-sucking flies on it that will kill it. We went though an awful pest infestation that turned all of the leaves yellow and darned near killed it. The little black flies that get in our house lay eggs in the soil and drive me crazy. I have it in our sunroom and it’s alive but not replenishing leaves. I am going to repot it and hopefully it will do better. I really want to keep it but it is a lot of work for me!!!

*_A STORY OF ANGST_* - prior homeowner planted a tree? bush? shrub? (I don't have a 'green thumb', had no idea what it was) in the master bathroom across the walkway from the large walk-in shower. Moisture from the shower easily reaches the plant because the ceiling in the master bath is 18 feet high (it's a custom home). And there's a 'bubbler' sprinkler head at the base of the plant - there's an adjacent outside patio and enclosed dirt area off the master bath with a sprinkler head (prior owner must have had a 'green thumb') Discovered the sprinkler head had cracked and was a emitting huge fountain of water (at 5am when the sprinklers come on) into the ground just outside the master bath - the plant inside the master bath's leaves turned dry crispy brown, curled up, some fell off (the concrete slab section of the foundation under this plant is an opening right through to ground for the plant) - "oh, the bubbler is not getting water pressure due to the broken sprinkler head just outside (they're on the same pipeline) - THE PLANT'S DYING DUE TO NO WATER FROM THE BUBBLER!" was my diagnosis So I fixed the outside sprinkler head, opened the inside bubbler wide, and started watering it for 10 minutes every day (at 5am). All the leaves then fell off. Went to Home Depot, "It's a Ficus", I found your video, I think I can save the plant by drying it out. Because I was WRONG about it being UNDERWATERED. The outside broken sprinkler head probably flooded the ground with water (not sure how long it was broken either!) and since the Ficus in our master bath is rooted through the foundation hole right into the ground, and is adjacent to the outside patio dirt area, the Ficus ALSO got flooded. So I mis-diagnosed the problem. I'm hoping by not watering it for a time it will come back. HOW LONG SHOULD I NOT WATER IT? EDIT: the hole in the foundation was put there, I'm assuming specifically to accommodate this plant. It's not visible, however - the bed at the base of the tree is covered with ornamental rocks, on top of sand (we live in Florida, everything here is sand). So the drainage for the plant is good. This plant easily reaches the ceiling and we've had to trim the top a couple times since buying the place to keep it off the ceiling. It's normally a very healthy plant and adds a natural sort of appeal to the master bathroom.

Great question! Water when the top inches of soil are dry then ensure the full root system has access to water. I would watch to make sure the water is draining properly out the bottom drainage holes. Otherwise if the bottommost soil stays too wet, the roots have a risk of turning black / rotten over time. For more, you can join and post inside our helpful fiddle leaf fig community! Fiddleleaffigplant.com/community

@@FiddleLeafFigPlant Thank you! I had pulled all the decorative rocks back around the base of the plant to check dampness of the sand under the rocks. When the plant's bubbler started providing water again, after running only 4 minutes there was a small pond of water at the base of the plant, deep enough for me to submerge my hand in. That told me the 'soil' under the plant is already waterlogged. Paradoxically, the appearance of the dry, brown, curled-up leaves that were all falling gave the impression of "too dry".
