Not for nothing, but if you hold your tailgate button for 10 seconds, that portion of your tailgate wont open, GM already designed that override feature for you, also, as others have posted, B&M makes a incredibly drop that still allows the tailgate feature to work.

Piece of mind specially when someone else pushes the button without even knowing...good job dude!

I know this video is older but on the "newer" models if you press and hold the top button on the tailgate your lights will flash and that means the drop down part is locked. So it won't drop down and hit your hitch.

Is there anyway to override the electronic release for the tailgate? Ie: Truck battery dies and you want the gate open or if the electric motor that unlocks it breaks etc..... There a way to open it?

Sometimes I wonder if GM engineers are pot heads or just don’t give a F about their job. I can remember when this tailgate came out and dealers were like “Wait a minute…what if you have a ball in….”. Just poor ass planning

B&W hitches makes a adjustable hitch specifically for those trucks and taillights

I’m really wanting a new GMC , even though the tailgate seems goofy since most trucks keep hitches on 24/7 , however I haven’t bought one yet because I’m afraid I want be able to modify the you know what, I guess my question is did you do your truck before the epa finally had there last crack down on PPEI and motor ops ??

So the step is still useless with the fix, while hitch is installed?

Or you could buy the B & M hitch for like $200.00 that was designed for the multipro gate and make no mods to your truck whatsoever. They have two versions 1 with 2 balls and 1 with three depending upon your needs. Also allows you to keep your hitch ready to go and protects you from some dumbass nicking your bumper while backing up towards your truck. And with it installed it doesn't stick out so you crack your knees on it. Just a thought.

I think I would just add a momentary switch under the bed rail that would take care of all of that. I think I would do it for the main tailgate too just in case you have a tall trailer hitch so someone inside the truck would accidentally let the tailgate down. Maybe there’s a way to disable the consol button on the inside?

The guys over at tailgatefix need to come up with a plug and play system so you don't have to cut factory wiring. Those scotch locks they use are questionable at best.

That's an awesome fix.. just fyi there is already hitches out there that clear this tailgate. As always awesome video.

Here's a better idea. When you don't have a trailer on....take the stinger out. Has worked for me over the last 4 decades...no BS switch or whatever. But I suppose, there are people who tear apart their dash to install a harness to deactivate the autostop...when there's already a button for it. Hey, someone's making money at least...

You all need to do a little checking because B&W has fixed this issue. They already have a receiver hitch designed for this tailgate.

Real question is if it will prevent the tailgate from coming down if the load stop in open on the multipro if you have a hitch on

For how much the truck costs GM couldnt just add this in the trucks finale assembly. Or you know actually engineer it right so it doesnt hit without the sensor

So it works good until the day someone puts the pin in reverse and opens the split gate.

You can press the upper button for 3 seconds and it will be disabled until you hold it for 3-4 seconds again

You think gm would build it into to tailgate

Since adding the headlights every time you show the front of your truck it looks so complete now.

What was the fix and why does it need to be fixed

If you hold the step button for 3 seconds it will disable the step. Just do that when you have the hitch in. Cheap

It wont hit cause the ball hitches are about a 2/3 inch drop so it should clear

Where I live if you leave your ball in, it will be stolen the first time you leave your truck in public for 5 minutes. So for people who only have it out when theyre towing, it isn't an issue.

When you tossed the instructions I stopped the video. Do a little research, B&W and you leave the hitch installed. With the little pin switch I guess you have to take the hitch off if you want to use the multi-tailgate. Don't seem like a good option to remove the hitch so you can use the tailgate as a step. If you leave the hitch off where do you store it, under the rear seat? I don't know how much the little switch kit cost, but just apply the cost toward the B&W, I don't think you buy a better hitch in price range, and with towing, I would not shop price to save a couple dollars. After 3 or 4 years I would have thought GM could come with a little redesign, but that would be admitting that they screwed up in the first place.

Not good that it does not work when flipped. You will forget it one day. I prefer not to keep a ball in and only use it when I need it and then remove it.

B&W had a drop hitch at sema designed for the gmc tailgate. It looked awesome. You can keep the hitch in and drop the tailgate no problem

So it is still useless with a hitch? Just get the regular tailgate.

Forget fixing the tailgate... for Christ sakes fix the feet on that truck!! Whoever put those God awful rims and tired on that truck should be tied to that hitch and drug down a dirt road for 10 miles. If you want your truck to look like a reached out el camino... just buy a roached out El camino... not a $64,000 truck!! Jeeessshhhhh...

Well such tailgate is pointless. And this stupid mod wouldbe useless for me. My hitch comes out when a different one goes in. I have a pintle hitch and a adjustable multi ball. I got rear-ended once a week after i got my one trk. I was glad i was getting my flatbed wiring fixed so i had my wd hitch in my reciever and no damage to my trk but hers was pissing green and red

Ford has had a tailgate step since 08. Why is everyone else trying to catch up now?? I prefer Ford's tailgate better anyways. Even though I am a Chevy guy....

You wouldn’t need that if GM had a decent design team. That is what you get when they try to out do Ford...epic fail!

How do u F up and make a mistake this big. So I buy the pro tailgate option and still can’t use it. I have a large heavy hitch for towing a travel trailer with the weight distribution bars that I leave on my truck full time for protection So in order to get Full use of this high dollar tailgate I would have to make mods cutting brand new wires or drop my heavy hitch every time= bull💩 even with the kit how long will this last after water 💦 mud off-roading etc 🤦‍♂️ GM

You should be driving around with your hitch in your truck anyways? In some places it’s against the law! It causes way more damage to other cars? First world problem!
