That is the first review of high h/cap clubs that made sense. Too many times low h/cap pro`s run these tests and are capable of hitting 7 irons !90 yards. These clubs were never designed for their skill level. Bob is the first realistic tester I have seen. Many thanks Bob that must have been quite exhausting.

this is a really useful video for so many players. I am playing some ancient Callaway X14's - which still go OK, but I feel ready to upgrade and have no idea where to even begin. I am a 25-ish handicapper, coming back to the game after many years. Playing for exercise and enjoyment, more social than comp. Great content. Thanks fellas.

Well done! It is so nice to see the club testing being done by an older, slower swing speed golfer. That gives those of us with the same golfer demographics a more accurate and honest assessment of the results we might expect. I would like to have seen him hit some of the newer “hybrid irons” (Cleveland Launcher HB Turbo, Wilson Launchpad, and Cobra T-Rail) for comparison and a possible alternative club set to more traditional looking GI and SGI irons. I would think the wider soles on those clubs would improve turf interaction from various lies, reduce chunked/fat shots and improve accuracy and consistency. 🏌️‍♂️⛳️😎

I thought this was an excellent video. Great to see a recreational golfer try out game improvement irons at last. 👏👏👏Now can you do a video with a female recreational golfer trying out GI irons as there's not much useful information or choice out there for us girls. I'm sure these clubs would help us too. Thanks 😊

Wow so looking forward to this i purchased the cobra sz and am rocking these bad boys. I play off 6 at 50 yrs old and have used players irons for years so anybody who says these game improvment irons are for mid / high handicaps couldn't be further from the truth. Let me say i hit a high spinny ball so these were exactly what i was looking for. They gave me more distance with the stronger lofts and front to back dispersion and spin are top draw. These are definitely worth a try for any golfer or ageing one like me if you want to pick up distance and consistency. Just make sure you get fit as you need to produce good spin levels and be able to lauch a mid / high ball flight first to get the best out of them. This is from a guy who played blades and more recently players irons and i won't be going back to any of them, that's how good these cobra sz are
@bretblack8050

I agree. I feel like the speedzones get a bad rap because of the strong lofts, cast heads, top line and “game improvement” tag. My friends who are great players were all pleasantly surprised by them. I have a set of old Hogans, the definition of butter. And while the Cobras aren’t nearly as buttery, they do feel awfully sweet when you flush one. The top line, to me, is not hideous at all and definitely inspires confidence and the numbers don’t lie. The things are rockets.

I tested the Mavriks and the distance was insane. I was hitting my 7 iron (usually 165y for me) was going195-200+ yards. Nuts. It was intoxicating, then i thought about using them on the course. i felt it would hurt more than help. I also had huge variance on mishits - maybe 150 yds vs 200. I wound up choosing the Cobra Radspeed. I have had cobra's before and feel they are underrated. still great distance but more consistent on mishits for distance (less than Mavriks, but close).

Just bought the 400s playing them Saturday for the first time. 57, had back surgery a few years ago and what little distance I had left went over the cliff. I needed to find some technology. Got fitted and tried clubs at the same time. Kept hitting the 400 7-iron over the screen. Sometimes I thought I did but realized it was still climbing and took forever to come back down into sight. The distances were from my ancient youth. 170, 180, think one stopped rolling at 190. Found out about the 'jacked loft' controversy when I got home with them. But I don't give a rat's azsz. If the 7-iron had the usual 7-iron loft I'd have launched it like a ballon and hit the damn thing into the ceiling. They're legal and that's good enough for me. It's always up to the player anyway.
@1funkybasslady
@1funkybasslady 3 года назад
Yes, the jacked loft thing is controversial. However what most folks who object to the idea of strengthening lofts don't take into account is the fact that although the loft of the 7 iron in the T400 set is actually a 6 iron loft, the overall length of the 7 iron is still a 7 iron length - not a 6 iron length. This means that it is easier to hit this 7 iron length club with 6 iron loft and hit it straighter than it would be to hit a 6 iron length, 6 iron lofted club. It is always easier to hit shorter length clubs straighter and more accurately than longer length clubs. That's why it is far easier to hit a 9 iron straight than a driver.

I really wish that you had selected the Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 iron as an option for Bob to hit. I have been playing that iron model for close to 7 months, and that is an iron model that I am quite sure would satisfy Bob’s needs for higher flight, more carry and a steeper landing angle. I am one year younger than Bob, at age 71, and I have about 12-14 MPH more clubhead speed than Bob; thus, I play stiff shafts in all of my clubs, including my irons (I have about 145-148 yards of carry distance with my 7-iron, and sometimes get 150+ yards of carry and 160+ yards of total distance with my 7-iron, with a 45* to 50* landing angle). However, I still suspect that the Exotics EXS 220 irons would really work well for Bob - and if he likes more of a hybrid look to his irons the EXS 220h would really be golden for him. In the end, based on the clubs that were made available to him. those two iron models that he selected would have been my choices as well if I were the subject of this session.

I thought he hit the Ping and the Mizuno really well, deloft them a bit and you’d get the same distance as the ones he really liked. Instead of the dispersion going horizontally the dispersion on the Ping and Mizuno went vertically or in the Ping’s case a perfect circle. I think he’d play better golf with either of those 2 clubs but that’s just my opinion.

Hi Jim, thanks for watching and commenting! The T400 is closer to a "super" game-improvement iron than the AP1. T400 is larger, wider sole, and has a hollow head construction versus the cavity back design of the AP1. With that said, both emphasize forgiveness and playability.

Very good vid, but Inthink for his water carry holes he needs some high launching hybrids like the Callaway Big Berthas. I swing a 7 iron around 83-85 mph and for long carry approach shots or par 3’s I almost always pull out a 6 or 7 hybrid because the shafts are short enough where you can control the shot, and they launch higher and descend steeper than any comparable carry iron would for me. Unless you’re a pro it’s silly to be using a 5 or 4 irons on a long approach shot that has to carry all the way to the green and stop fairly fast. Hybrids actually check up pretty quickly due to their typical relative higher launch and descent angles than comparable distance irons. This guy should absolutely have some higher lift hybrids in his bag for those par 3’s.
@2ndswing
@2ndswing 3 года назад
Thanks for the comment! You're absolutely right. Bob would definitely benefit from hybrids for a good portion of his "iron" set. For this video, we just wanted to test the performance of those super game-improvement models, and figured Thomas hitting it in the center of the face every time wouldn't show as much! The best place to make the transition to hybrid, generally, is when that consistent height number drops a little bit. Clubs through the bag should have relatively the same peak height, but it can drop in those longer irons, which is when it's time for that switch to maintain that height.
@justinstephenson9360
@justinstephenson9360 4 года назад
There are a few issues with the fitting and they all come back to the lofts of the clubs. Ball speed & efficiency are directly related to the strength of the lofts, a straighter face club will generally produce better ball speed and efficiency (which is why a driver to get 1.45-1.5 efficiency but a 7i s 1.35-1.4). The reality is that if you compare the lofts in the new clubs with his old clubs many of them would be the equivalent of his 6i...but a higher launching version of that 6i ad generally higher spinning. Bob may find that the loft of the 5i in the new set (maybe the 6i in the strongest lofted set) is just too low for him to consistently launch the ball. So he may find he needs 1, possibly 2, less irons in his bag and replace them with hybrids
@2ndswing
@2ndswing 4 года назад
Hi Justin. You make a great point about the lofts. In a true full fitting, Thomas would have dug into at what point Bob should begin using hybrids instead of irons. This was more of a test to see how these types of irons perform for a golfer that would fit the demographic, as we get a lot of requests to have a slower swinger or higher handicapper hit game-improvement clubs rather than Thomas (and understandably so). Thanks for watching!

I enjoyed the content and the time taken.. but : The iron he should’ve chosen was the Callaway. Less loft, more consistent, better stopping and had his smash factor been better with the club, it would’ve highlighted how good that iron was for him. Essentially some of those other irons were lofted like a 5 iron, hence the increased ball speed. Not a true comparison and some of the irons tested have longer shafts 👍
@2ndswing
@2ndswing 4 года назад
Hi Peter, thanks for watching. We agree that it is not a true comparison when the clubs have different lofts. @1funkybasslady
@1funkybasslady 3 года назад
That Titleist 7 iron is NOT a "true" 6 iron because the overall length of the club is still 7 iron. It just has a 6 iron loft. This is a factor that virtually NONE of the videos reviewing strong lofted irons ever makes a point of telling viewers. Most iron sets that have strong lofts still have "conventional" lengths for the designated iron number. That said, in the past, virtually all golf clubs had shorter "standard" lengths than today's models. It would be interesting to know if the so-called "Pro" models have shorter shaft lengths than "game improvement" models in addition to having more traditional "weaker" lofts.

My question is if the manufactures are making the head angles different how do you know what club you are truly hitting, in other words does the club say 7 but it is a 6 then why do we need new clubs, truly a question I hope someone has an answer for
@1funkybasslady
@1funkybasslady 3 года назад
With these new clubs with strong lofts have a "7" on the head but the loft is that of a 6 iron however the 7 iron still has the 7 iron length. That makes it easier to hit more accurately but farther because of the strong loft. A shorter length club is easier to hit accurately than a longer length club. That's why it is easier to hit a 9 iron straight than a 4 iron or a driver. So when you make a 7 iron length club with 6 iron loft you get the advantages of both. The is one reason to get new clubs. Golf club technology has improved so much in recent years that manufacturers are making clubs that are so much more forgiving and easier to hit which makes the game more fun for those of us who are not pros. That is why I own - and love - the Titleist T400's. For many years when I carried a single-digit handicap I used soft forged carbon steel "player's" blades. Nothing feels as good as hitting a soft-covered ball with forged blades. Sweet!! Because they were unforgiving, they forced me to be very precise with my swing, so playing those blades really sharpened up my game. At that time I felt that playing cast stainless steel forgiving "game improvement" clubs allowed me to be a bit sloppy in my swing, and it hurt my game. I also didn't like the feel and sound at impact of those hard steel clubs. These days because of the ravages Mother Nature and Father Time have bestowed upon me, and the unkind treatment I receive from Mr. Arthur Ritis, I need help in the distance category, so I am thoroughly enjoying the benefits offered by my Titleist "super game improvement" T400 irons. I'm regaining lost distance, and they are easy to swing. They also have a satisfying "click" at impact with a soft-covered ball.

Depending on the golfer the stronger lofted irons help a player with their dynamic loft. He was very happy and is much more comfortable with the results on the course he plays.

its only 5 shots, come back another day and hit another 5 shots and that tight dispersion could be gone. I would personally get my fave 2 from this test and his 20 with each again and see what that showed.

New Subscriber! And I truly enjoyed the video, as well as, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xrUwjZJgr1g.html . I did have a questions since I am in the market for an iron/hybrid game improvement combo set. After watching those videos, and looking up some specs on the different makes and models, I have noticed an overlap with lofts between hybrids and irons. For example, If I were to purchase the Speedzones, their 6 Iron and 5 Hybrid both have 24 degrees of loft. Does that mean both clubs will go the same distance? If so, I would buy a set from P-7, 5H, 4H, 3H; correct?
@2ndswing
@2ndswing 4 года назад
Hi Randy, thanks for watching our videos and for commenting! This does depend on the clubs in question. Generally, hybrids are designed to go farther than irons of the same loft just because of the construction. Cobra designed the 5h and the 6-iron at the same loft in order to provide the proper gapping when blended into a full set.

worrying about distance is stupid surely he just picks a 6 iron if he wants 10-15 more yards and then gets it on the green. why hit a 7 iron which goes far and is in the bunker to the right?

I really do not understand why club fitters do not stress that some of those clubs were 7 irons and some were 6 irons in terms of loft. Compare apples to apples!!! 27 degree vs. 31 degree is not a fair comparison. Gee which one is going to go further, I wonder. How can you accurately speak to numbers with that big of a difference in lofts. Just does not make sense to me.
@2ndswing
@2ndswing 3 года назад
Hi Ed. Thanks for watching. Height, landing angle and spin is more important to pay attention to. For example If a player delivers a club with a high dynamic loft, less loft on the club will help get the player into the right window for a 7iron. It is important that the club still has stopping power and if a players height drops or landing angle decreases we know a golfer needs more loft. Just because a club has less loft on it means its designed to go further, the GC of the club has been modified on that specific club to increase launch. Every golfer swings differently and loft can help us get a player into the optimal window for a 7 iron.

As a 72 year old, Bob Norrbohm should've been testing irons with graphite shafts. It won't be long before he suffers from "golf elbow" or strained wrists. steel shafts do not absorb the shock of hitting a golf ball, graphite does. I would recommend hybrid irons all the way through 9 iron. And buy wedges with graphite shafts too. I stopped watching after 10 minutes

Thats a nonsense with T400! Should compare them against 6 irons of other brands if Titleist just put 7 on a 6 iron. Shame that fitter did not point out that then you need to get just more wedges to close the gaps at the bottom range… so against ping 710 6 iron would have same loft as T400 7 iron and that would be fair comparison and Ping would likely be better. Why do people do get fooled by it? YOU WANT MORE DISTANCE? HIT A DIFFERENT IRON! DOESNT WORK? USE MORE FRIENDLY IRON OR USE HYBRID! There is only one aspect of newer clubs that may be good, larger gaps in lofts! So if you don’t have speed at least you will have consistent gaps of ~10y and just fewer clubs in bag. But these clubs should start from the same SW wedge that allows you to get out of hunker…
@2ndswing

More importantly peak height and stopping power the T400 won't stand a chance to stop on the green with a low club speed. - Thomas
