There have been several exciting new #game-improvement irons that have been introduced to the golf market at the start of 2020, so we figured it was the perfect time to conduct our Ultimate Game-Improvement #Iron #comparison. In this exclusive video, 2nd Swing master fitter Thomas Campbell and staff writer Drew Mahowald test several game-improvement iron options -- some that have just been released and some that have been highly successful over the course of the last year or so -- against each other using #Trackman 4 technology. They also offer their feedback about the different models as it relates to look, sound, and feel, while also breaking down all the numerical data. Included in our Ultimate Game-Improvement Iron Test are the #Titleist #T300, #PING #G410, #PING #G710, #Srixon Z #585, #Callaway #Mavrik,# Callaway #Mavrik Max, #TaylorMade #SIM Max, #TaylorMade #SIM Max OS,# Mizuno #JPX 919 Hot Metal, and# Cobra #SpeedZone.
You can find more information about all of these irons at www.2ndswing.com/t-latest-mod....

It would be great if an average golfer that hits around the clubface could test these irons that are made for the average golfer so we can see how these irons perform. This robot dude test would be good for like .000000001% of golfers with a consistent swing like this. Keep the test videos coming, really enjoy them!

I really enjoyed this mega test. So many good iron brands to choose from makes it difficult to make a choice. However, I was most impressed with both Callaway irons and the Cobra Speed Zone. It is also entertaining and instructive to watch such a consistent and mechanically correct swing.

Thanks Chester - we appreciate the feedback and kind words! Callaway definitely does a great job of delivering playability in this category, and everyone that hits SpeedZone seems to like it. Cobra did a great job of building on the F9 irons, which were also very good.

Looking at the dispersion of the test you really didn't touch on the T300 which going off this test was amazing IMO.You pulled one slightly left. And the stats match anything there & better.

Great review, but you needed the Wilson D7 for a complete comparison instead of just the popular. I was shocked when I was told to try the Wilson D7 when comparing before my new purchase. Behold I bought the D7's and never looked back. I'm a eight handicap and Love the consistency and especially the distance.

Bought the Mav Max this year. 63 years old, 7 handicap. Coming from Calloway x22 Tour. I’m getting older and just wanted to find the sweet spot a little easier and l little distance help. First three games had to get over the SGI look with the big top line and offset. Second three games......hmmmmmm....these might work out. After.......oh baby! Once I started hitting them with confidence my distance control was fantastic, proximity to pin on approach shots was 33% better and rarely hit a big offline shot. Handicap is now 5.5. 👍🏻

(Following Ben's comment) I consider myself a mid-handicapper (hcp 16-17) and I do appreciate very much this video! It's a rare chance to see so many irons relevant to my play being tested and compared together with concrete data. Thanks to Thomas' consistent swing, which I could only dream of, I think I got quite some good info about those clubs' performance under 'near-ideal' situation. I don't care so much of the extra distance due to stronger loft, but I am very keen to understand spin, peak height, decent angle and carry dispersion with similar swings (meaning similar club head data). This video provides lots of such info! Thanks! I think I understand somehow the difficulty to test with mid-handicappers commented by Thomas. Look at the trajectory and landing of my own shots on Trackman or GC Quad. It's typically a mess! However, we don't need to create a nice and neat trajectory pattern. What I care most is the percentage of good and ok shots I can produce! For example, my 7-iron club speed is just below 80 mph instead of over 90. I can only occasionally deliver an 'ideal' swing. If I hit 7 iron 10 times on course, I might got 3 good shots, 3 ok or mediocre, 3 bad ones plus 1 disastrous. I don't expect any club to fix my shank or duffed shots but I do hope to know which clubs may improve my good shots and raise my percentage of 'OK-shots'. Golf is a percentage game! I have for long time envisioned that someone can make series of 'mid handicapper tests' like below: - An average mid handicapper (15-18?) with more or less balanced skill set, e.g. 7-iron speed
@2ndswing
@2ndswing 4 года назад
Jian, your comments here, which we appreciate, and many of the others highlight the value of fitting, as every golfer would have different experiences with these irons. Why we like using Thomas to test clubs, be it pure blades or game-improvement irons, is that the quality with which he strikes the ball can help a wider audience possibly identify trends within a sample size that they might not have otherwise had the chance to see. Yes, Thomas wouldn't play a full set of one of these irons, but he provides data comparing launch, spin, distance that would be more consistent than having a higher-handicapper conduct the same test. And our goal is to pass along that objective data, as well as input about look, sound and feel, to a wider audience in hopes that it might help those golfers feel like maybe they can narrow their choices and then go about the process of getting the perfect fit for their game. Anyway, it's not an exact science and there's no perfect solution that will make everyone happy, but we believe that what we're trying to do will provide value to the widest audience, which is why we've chosen this approach. Thanks for checking out the video!

Great stuff! Its so good to have someone that can hit more than two decent shots in a row doing these comparisons and other club testing. My preference would be to see more than 5 shots for each club but understand time constraints there are. One thing that I'm not sure you cover (more club review than comparison) is the number/type of shafts and upgrades are available for respective manufacturers.👍👍👍

So much Mavrik love and very little Cobra love until the end as it was actually the best club tested. No one who uses these should be concerned on how well they can draw the ball. If they are, they should buy a different type of club. For these clubs it is about getting the ball up in the air, getting some distance and HITTING THEM STRAIGHT. If you take out the one right outlier with the Cobra, you have one of the top east/west dispersions circles (it goes straight!) and you have pretty much a top 2 distance club without having bottom 2 spin. Perfect! Another thing not even talked about was north/south dispersion which Cobra was best at hands down. Even with a pro hitting here, look how bad the Mavrik was at inconsistent distances. On green approaches, maybe the best and most important factor of all, the Cobra wins here. No one wants to have one shot land short to have their next shot fly the green, always a complaint of the super game improvement iron. Great comparison, just think you left out out some important info. Too much talk about workability for this type of club. People who need these types of clubs have no business worrying about how much they can work the ball. Forgiving clubheads, that give some added distance, fly dead straight and have decent spin should be the focus. Cobra wins in my book. Still a great video.

hopefully you are saying that just out of curiosity and not for the purpose of potentially buying. I'm a beginner, I started playing 1-2 times a week this year with hand-me-downs from the 90's-00's. before that, I had a semester I took a golf class in college back in 2016 and maybe played 1 time a year since then till now. My average right now is about 104 - just under double bogey golfer. I got fitted 2-3 weeks ago and some of these game improvements irons I just couldnt get the right characteristics. I hit just about all of these and the only 2 that really were within an acceptable range were the t300 and jpx921 (which I ended up ordering the latter). ping and maverick max i couldnt get to launch high enough even after hitting everything really well. My fitter is a certified top 100 best club fitter in the country (sticks96 wichita ks) so i know he was providing me with the best setup for each clubs possible.... tldr each player is going to hit them differently and have different results that cant be measured by seeing how others hit them. maybe at best you can get lucky and see if *most* people hit them well you might too if your swing is like those *most* people's

Hi Mark. You are shifting from a players iron to a players-distance iron, so you should get some more forgiveness and some more distance. One other note is that the lofts of the Srixon Z585 irons are stronger by about three degrees, so that will also add some distance on each club. One thing you will lose is workability. It will be tougher to move the ball left to right or right to left, depending on your preferred shot. Hope this helps!

Very nice quality of test, but Question: How is this testing the forgiveness of game improvement and super game improvement irons when the guy hitting them is basically flushing almost every shot on the sweet spot of the face? As an example, looking at the Srixon Z85, how the heck is a club with that thin of a top line and that narrow of a sole a game improvement iron? With that narrow of a sole in particular a high handicapper will likely be digging that thing into the ground hitting fat shots constantly if they are really a high handicapper IMO.

How are those smash factors possible? 7-iron should be around 1.35. Is Trackman working properly on a that short indoor space? PGA average is 1.33. They play mostly with traditional lofts but still 1.4 and even almost 1.5 seems impossible.
@2ndswing
@2ndswing 4 года назад
It's because of the stronger lofts that irons in this category have. Those stronger lofts lead to significantly more ball speed, as in some cases you're going from what would be a traditional 7-iron loft of 34 degrees down to as low as 27 or so. But these 7-irons are all still 37 inches in length, so regardless of whether the loft is 34 degrees or 27 degrees the swing speed will be about the same. And when you calculate smash factor given those dynamics you're going to see some big numbers, especially as solid as Thomas hits it.
@peterhammer6915

Love the tests and data ,but why o why do you do this with a very low handicapper , as these irons are designed as game improvement aimed at mid to high handicap golfer ,would like the test repeated with a more real world swing and swing speed along with the inconsistences that would bring then we would have a more realistic comparison ,, ??? btw great content on other vids and you have a new subscriber

I think it would be a much better test, with a decent mid handicapper, with a swing speed of around 80. I know my 7 iron swing speed is about 79mph. Plus you are going to get a few more mishits and can judge how much forgiveness there is.

During my fitting I hit the mavrik, g410, king cobra, TM 790 and the sim max...actually hit the 790 the best, but I couldn’t justify the difference in cost. The sim max OS were bulky but I didn’t mind that. You could feel the weight low in the club. Feel was really good...surprised how soft they felt. They had one of the highest ball speeds and smash factor. I’m looking forward to playing them!

Depends on the irons. I played Ping Eye 2+ irons for 20+ years myself. 3 years ago i finally upgraded to a modern iron. Titleist 716 AP1's. If you hit them out of the center, you are correct, not much difference. But hit your Ping's from the toe and you lose 20+ yds. Modern clubs are much more forgiving, by a long shot.

@harold4506
@harold4506 4 года назад
@@johnnypenso9574 That's not what the testing showed. It also depends on who is hitting the club. Go and take a look John Daly's first win. The USPGA at crooked stick, he was using Ping Eye irons and hitting them further than many tour players can today. The differences are marginal. Especially when you consider that the Eye 2 was made 30 years ago, and you pick up a set for £60.

Q: why the back spin # are so low? A: Hi it's Thomas Campbell. Yes the backspin numbers are lower partially becuase they are game improvement irons. When there is less loft on a club the ball will spin less and the 7irons are stronger than more players category irons. Also I do hit a little draw when the ball curves to the left it will spin less, curve to the right will spin more. Good news is the irons are designed to fly higher so that still provides stopping power on the greens.
@nijian99
@nijian99 4 года назад
Bad news for most mid handicap is that the peak height could be much less (typically 20 meters) at 80 mph club speed for a 7-iron than the height of over 30 meters at 90 mph. Combined with a spin less than 5000 rpm or even 4500 rpm, the stopping power is a problem.

Can these “game improvement “ irons hinder you game improvement since you can consistently hit the ball off center and not pay a real penalty for it ??
@2ndswing
@2ndswing 3 года назад
That's an interesting perspective! That said, as someone swings more consistently over time, they'll "grow out of" game-improvement irons because they should gradually find the center of the clubface more often, which is why manufacturers release iron models with different levels of forgiveness.

I always wonder why people testing game improvement irons aren’t the ones who need game improvement irons. I have never seen anyone who needed GI irons hit a 7 iron 200 yards. Maybe you should use a weekend hacker who can barely break 80. If said hacker hit those irons 200 yards without changing his/her swing then you can call them game improvement irons.

No disrespect meant since you two guys seem genuinely nice and well intentioned, but having a guy who swings his irons faster than 90% of the golfing population swings a driver test game improvement irons when he's obviously played blades or player's irons his entire life is about as useful for those of us seeking reasonable comparisons for our skill level and swing speeds as Lebron James showing us how to dunk on a 12 foot rim. You don't have anyone who works at 2nd Swing who would be more representative of the speeds and types of players who would be playing these types of irons?

@Ben Hoganblades When it's done as a comparison with similar irons I don't have a problem with a robot hitting them. I actually want a robot hitter. Ofc these irons aren't geared to the tester but that's not the point of the test. The point of the test is to see how each of these irons measure up to each other. There's alot of useful info in this review. Case in point the Mavrik Max. If I know someone who has trouble getting the ball up and need forgiveness that's the perfect iron. What's the point of having all that power in an iron when you can't get the ball up in the air? This is why a robot is good for these tests vs a mid-hi handicapper who isn't as consistent in their shot making abilities. It wouldn't even be a good test for forgiveness because the mid handicapper will hit some shots better than others which may or may not have anything to do with the iron. Without club data we just won't know. That's Useless. I as a viewer am not interested in how well or not well a golfer hits these shots. I am interested in how these irons perform. And the best way to do that is take out the variables in golfer ability. Now if instead there was a female pro with SS more in line with normal middle age golfers that might be ideal. Sophie from golfalot comes to mind, very consistent and swings in the 80s. She is basically the female robot version of Thomas. They're very rare tho and I don't feel anything is lost with a robot hitter like Thomas here. Not to mention it's always a treat watching Thomas hit be it with GI irons or blades.

Mid handicappers don't have a consistent swing or strike pattern and their results are all over the place. I play off 10 but I would never do one of these because I am not consistent enough to produce meaningful results. Now a low handicap 70 year old guy or a strong woman would be a good test in terms of hitting the same distances most of us duffers do

I to really appreciate the in-depth review that you guys did when testing these game improvement irons. However with such a great swing and such a great golfer this guy always has the sweet spot. Most of us average golfers do not hit the sweet spot. I think a better test would be to have him actually try and hit off-center shots. Then we could actually see the game improvement effect of the iron.
