You don't get to turn on the coffee untill your bed is made. And if your in the bathroom more than 15 minutes dad is gonna use a belt on your butt and make you wash the breakfast dishes for making everyone late. 1 bathroom 5 bodies have to use it. EVERYONE IS REQUIRED TO BE ON TIME. sorry no coffee till you get to work and make it yourself. ( dad was NEVER LATE FOR ANYTHING) and we had a hot breakfast 6 days a week.

Freeze dried coffee is instant coffee :) I know instant coffee gets a bad rap, but truly it has improved SO much over the years. If you try one brand and don't like it, try a different brand. It's best to try a few different brands before choosing one to stock up on. Personally I like Nescafe or Taster's choice (medium), but let your tastebuds guide you. Tuna candle....yeah no, I don't think that particular scent will be coming to a Yankee Candle near you anytime soon. lol.

I have froze cheddar cheese & Colby jack cheese in blocks and the cheese has done fine up to 3 month so far. I wouldn't know any longer because my husband eats it up quickly. He is very picky and says it still retains its form and taste. I use the press and seal to cover the cheese then put it in a seal meal bag and seal it up. The press and seal wrap is the best!l it just keeps the cheese from getting ice crystals.

A tip for rice. Parboiled rice retains nearly as many nutrients as brown rice but with the long shelf life of white rice. It also requires less time & less water to prepare which would be handy in a longer term (more than a day or two power outage) emergency when you would be relying on stored water & fuels for cooking.

It really depends on what temperature the whole wheat flour was exposed to, on its way to your house. If it got hot at any point, the shelf life will be 1/8 as long as if it was kept cool the whole time. I've had whole wheat flour last me (once and only once, a fluke) 4 years, and I've also had it last 6 months. The thing is, you won't know what the shelf life is, until it goes rancid. I just bought 400 pounds of wheat berries, (got my bulk discount, and it was on sale!) and I know they will be good for 5 years at the absolute minimum. I make about a 1000 pounds of bread per year for my family of three, so I'll go through that wheat very fast. Fresh ground wheat is SO GOOD too!

I agree dry beans are better for storage. Grinding your own flour is better and stores better. I’ve had canned beans and stuff several yrs. 2 yrs that are fine . Unless cans rusted or bulging then toss them. I found a can of bushes I forgot about accidentally that were 3 years and were fine. Lucky I guess. I normally write best by ( bb) date on all cans. But missed one . I worked in food service at a military day care in the kitchen. Had a course a few times. First in first out. (FIFO )

Kind of off topic. I was checking and rotating supplies and pulled out a bucket that had been stacked with two buckets on top. Over time, the weight of the top two buckets had made the lid flex downward a little bit. It was enough to make it very difficult to get the lid to unscrew. I ended up spraying it with a little WD-40 and let it set overnight. The next day I took a piece of wood (to protect the plastic) and a hammer and whacked the part in the center that look like a cross. Slowly and with gentle taps, the lid finally came off. I think that properly applied cuss words also help. So now, when I'm stacking the 5 gallon pails, I run a board along the row on top of each layer of buckets. It redistributes the weight so that it isn't pressing down right on the screw threads.

Shelf-life past code date per my USDA placard: Five years past code date: Canned vegetables and beans. Pea soup. Tuna. Canned meat packed in broth (beef/chicken/turkey). Corned beef/roast beef hash. Spam. Bully beef. Three years past code date: Canned chili and beef stew. Canned soup with a tomato component. Boyardee. Canned tomatoes/tomato sauce. Right now, I can find pretty much all of the items listed above with a 2026 or 2027 code date, meaning there's a lot of stuff out there that should be good to consume into the early 2030's. If there are deals to be had on any of these items, it's back up the truck time, while they're available.

COFFEE: I have some beans stored up, but let me say that I have used Folgers that is a year past the date. Actually, I"m drinking some now. I also store it in my barn in my feed room in a big set of used kitchen cupboards, NY state - cold most of the year, and it is just fine. I've also had, accidentally, flour about a year past the date, stored in mylar, be fine - but that was a surprise. Sometimes, an accident like losing track of that flour because I had to keep re-arranging, can be a learning experience. But I wouldn't do that on purpose. I have wheat berries.

We have a great debate in our house. Hubby is a coffee snob - I just need coffee prevent me from killing peeps. I also worked in healthcare my entire career so I am not picky. I stocked up on Folgers but hubs LOVES his beans. Our deal is who ever wakes first makes the coffee and since I hate using the coffee grinder he nearly always wakes up first. On the occasion that he sleeps in - I hear him shuffle into the kitchen then hear "craaap folgers" :-) You snooze you lose dude. 🙂

I love watching your videos and saying to myself, "Yep. Got that. Yep, make our own maple syrup, nope, I don't know about WalMart either." The last time I was there, that was the last straw. It isn't WM itself, it's the hoodlums it draws to it like a big magnet. I've been in the parking lot, parked WAY far from everybody else, because I want to see around my truck when I come out, and open all the doors to load the groceries, and all of a sudden, my door hits me. Some hoodlum bumped the cart with his car, which hit my door, when I was bent over inside putting down a bag of groceries. I looked up, and he's yelling out the window, "That's MY space." There were, literally, hundreds of spaces in this huge lot. OK, he's nuts......he and the woman in the car then proceeded to berate me (as I stood there quite puzzled and wondering if I should yell for help, find my phone and call the police or what, they were yelling at me 'how dare you park there, we have a BABY in the car." Absolutely no sense. And the list of abuses goes on....so I started only going with my very large husband and telling him to not leave my side. Girls - don't you hate that? But if he's there, no one bothers me. But he travels for work, so the last time some hoodlum insulted me last month, right when he wandered to the auto section, that was it. No more WM. We have a Target a couple more miles away. Most places I go, JoAnns Fabric, Agway, Tractor Supply, and BJ's Wholesale Club, are fine - the hoodlums do not go there, because they are at WM I guess.

I watch for sales on milk like 97 cents for a half gallon then buy the limit, write the date I bought it, and put it in the freezer. I've had as much as 8 gallons in the freezer and it lasted me a long time. As for dealing with cheese, always wear gloves when handling it. The natural bacteria on our hands will get on the cheese and cause molding faster.

I store pure cane sugar in mylar bags that are resealable and dont heat seal the bag. Do not store in a bucket it will go rock hard on you. Pasta is so cheap to purchase but I know how to make by hand and have a manual roller but I found an electric pasta maker in my opinion was worth the costnof the machine. Powered milk I store in Mylar and heat sealed. I also keep canned milk as well as several cases of boxed milk. Coconut milk and cream. Cheese is an issue as they are using a phizer fake rennet and a fermentation process to confuse the consumer. I keep the ground cofffee in mylar heat sealed bags with oxygen absorbers. What lasts for ever is the freeze dried instant coffee which very time I see it on sale and the individual packets those are amazing to keep in the EDC and in your vehicle. You can use your freeze drier and do your own boullion or freeze dried bone broth. On salt all mammals and birds needs salt why they go for the eyes first the salt content. Your halo or whats called the 12 cranial nerves in your brain, each one has an salt or mineral attributed to it. Ists are great to stretch your burger. Ghee I do pressure can it myself and have done so for many years as well as canned bacon. My all American pressure canner will do the job. Spices chuck out the bottle and into mylar bags. Good video👍

Leisa, what's your opinion on waxing your own block cheese? I hear that if you use the proper wax, dry out the cheese a bit (couple days, brushing the surface of the blocks with vinegar to kill any mold spores) then give it couple coats of wax and put it in the fridge, it will last mold-free a very long time. folks who have a cold room can keep waxed cheese in that. Watch the honey. There is a lot of fake honey out there. There are sites on RU-vid about how to tell what is safe. Best find a local bee keeper if you can.

Added benefit to local beekeeper is the bees visit YOUR region and therefore provide (some) allergy/hay-season relief.

SO only plan on commercial white flour to last a year regardless of how it is stored? And only do wheat when you grind it yourself. Does the wheat oil go away somehow or it is only added when processing? Or only ground as you go?

There have been videos from other people using older stored flour, and it is completely fine. I think, if stored well, you can get a much longer shelf life than 1 year.

I had some from 2011 and pressure canned them in chicken broth. I used fewer beans than the recipe said, so that they could expand more. I figured there were more to a cup after being dried out like that. Anyway, after the pressure canning and setting in storage for over a year, I opened them up and they were fine.
