Did you fit optimisers? You’ve got panels in a single string at 2 different pitches.

For the flat roof does there have to be ply immediately under the surface or can the racking system sit on felt thats layed ontop of rigid insulation?

Looks like a tidy install there! I am looking at having integrated PV on my roof as I can't stand the sight of normal 'on-roof' panels! Really liking the look of the GSE system and also the Viridian system. Interested to know anyone's thoughts of the relative cost of these systems compared to 'on-roof' panels. Clearly there is extra work involved (stripping off existing tiles etc) and extra cost for the various flashings etc but for a small 6 panel system (I have a very small roof) its still only a 2 day job I'm thinking?
@dorewoodman
@dorewoodman Год назад
Thank you for the comment. Yes it shouldn’t take more than 2 days, depending on your budget the Viridian system is better and in fact easier to install albeit it is more expensive. We used the GSE as the developer was working on a tight budget and it was slightly cheaper.

If you do an inroof system and the original roof felt in non breathable wound you advice stripping the whole roof and changing to breathable. No issues with existing felt.

Thanks for the video with the detail on the GSE kit. Can I ask, did you use the foam strip around the edges? I’ve had this system installed on my roof and they never used any foam strip even tho the GSE installation guides says to use it.
@dorewoodman
@dorewoodman Год назад
Hi Stephen, yes we did use the foam strip around the top and down the left and right hand sides. It just helps to seal the edges when the slate or tile laps onto it.

@@dorewoodman do you know what explicit problems would be caused if it isn’t used? Also how far under the tile does it go - would tiles need to be removed again to retrofit?

@johnhunter4181 Год назад
My installers didn't use it either and I think it's basically to keep birds etc out of the roof. From what I can find out it expands to fill any gaps under the tiles. Have you managed to get your installers back to fix it? Mine are coming back tomorrow.
@johnhunter4181
@johnhunter4181 Год назад
At 5.41 you show all these extra screws holding down the flashing but GSE Tech support told me: "Adding fixing points (and not pre-drilled ones) that strain the frame and the material in places that are not designed to take such strain can lead to cracking." I think they're suggesting the panel clamps are enough to hold the flashing but my installers have also added screws which is a concern. Do we need more screws holding down a little bit of flashing than holding down all the solar panels?
@dorewoodman
@dorewoodman Год назад
Hi John, we did use the screws shown as our point and positions to hold the clamps that hold the panels. Either way the screws had to penetrate the profile on the edges and centres to fix the panels to the roof. We installed as per the Manufacturers Instructions and we haven't had any issues up to this point.

Just installing this kit on my roof, the issue we're having is the plain clays overlap the side trays and need to fix mechanically but would need to puncture the metal flashing trays, how did you guys overcome that?

@@jamiebell3980 Also wondering about this my self, I've not found any answers as yet!
@theselfbuildarchitect7410
@theselfbuildarchitect7410 Год назад
@@jamiebell3980 in the end the roofer and I agreed the only way really was one fixing on the batten and another through the flashing on the batten line. Hopefully the quantity of water getting under the tile is minimal enough to be a non issue. You could always put a bit of black mastic on the flashing before screwing through as a self seal. Not ideal. Overall not a great design really. We're also having a few issues of slipping panels as the clips seem to be struggling with the pitch!

I do like solar & I'm looking into getting it my self but I have to admit seeing all those lovely old houses in the background with solar panels stuck all over them seems like a crime against aesthetics. Shame but what can you do 🙅‍♂
@dorewoodman
@dorewoodman Год назад
Indeed, but some sacrifices are worth while in the grand scheme of things. Do you have an older property?
@northeastcorals
@northeastcorals Год назад
@@dorewoodman Yes I have a pair of old semi detached cottages around 120 years old, which I've knocked through into one. Last year I done a complete new cut roof on one of them, slated it, put in some rows of clipped corner slates to form patterns & topped it off with decorative ridge tiles with club patterns. I constantly got stopped by passers by who seemed fascinated by what I was doing & I still get compliments for it when I'm out in the garden etc. I'd not actually done a roof before but money was tight & I couldn't seem to get a roofer so I give it a go & it turned out canny. I was going to do the same on the other cottage this summer but decided I want solar so now I'm thinking just a dark grey roof tile would be more practical. Also thinking integrated panels will look nicer but besides the 5 to 10% drop in efficiency the longevity of their water tightness does worry me (especially with the loft being converted). Ideally I want this to be the last re-roof I ever do & concrete tiles should hopefully see me out but I've no idea how long I can realistically expect from integrated panels?
