The latter. In all truth, it's very hard to properly steam plant-based milk options in general. In some cases, and depending on the milk, you could get better results with the steam wand, like the example I gave of the Earth's Own: I can steam and produce good latte art out of it with my espresso machine - a bit better than I could with the BaristaMaker. But I certainly couldn't with the coconut milk and my results with the almond were no different either.
