The Palmetto Theatre was opened in 1949 by Jesse Booth. After closing in 1966, the space was used for various purposes before becoming a habitat for animals.
As a young boy in the 1950s, Durward Bennett used to attend Saturday matinees at the Palmetto Theatre in Walnut Cove. He recalls watching Western movies on the big screen and enjoying the format of the show. Between the regular movie and an intermission, a serial western would be shown in 15-minute segments. Bennett remembers this as a special part of the movie experience during that time.
Durward and five other people saved the Palmetto and reopened it.

Thank you John for coming back and filming the theater and thank you Durward for identifying the parade photo. The fire department started in 1956 and my Daddy and Uncle Elwood were both charter members. Big thank you to Durward Bennett, Kim Farrell, Don Richardson, Durwood Dunlap, Connie Derrenbacher and the last person whose name escapes me for buying and restoring this great Walnut Cove landmark!

Thanks John, they really did a great job restoring this theater. This says a lot about the citizens to care enough about their town to take on a project of this size.

What a treat! They did a wonderful job of preserving what they could and making some modern improvements to serve the community. I really enjoyed seeing the old projectors and rewinding machine. Love the history and that era. Worth taking a trip to try and recapture some of life back then. Very nice job on this video, as usual. God bless

My hometown theater looked just like the Palmetto theater in the '60's. I actually got to do some rewinding of the reels as a kid, my best friend 's family ran the theater. The balcony in those days was for segregation. Wish someone would have saved our old theater. Another enjoyable video John. Thank you.

I would think a good old fundraiser for a sprinkler system would help. Maybe not the full amount but it all helps. Great video once again John.

Oh my! This theater is wonderful to see. They need a grant writer to get the money for the fire system.

That original floor tile would no doubt have asbestos in it. I'm surprised they kept it
