Honestly, as somebody who studied TWICE (MSc and medical school), never settle for a job that doesnt bring you joy. You are only 21 years old, you can change your course many times, and you'll never regret doing so. Sometimes its not always about the safest option, but what gives you that spark to live your life. You have 70 years left, dont spend them doing something you dont find all that interesting. Remember you can always go back and fourth as well. You can go back to cambridge, and go back again to actuarials later if you wish, and at the same time you will have expanded your options. I never regretted studying more, I also did about 10 months in a job before changing course and started studying again. Just let life happen, its fun :-)

Thanks for this comment haha, I needed to read this. I'm doing a second bachelor (I'm now 24) and after that I want to do a M.Sc.. Lots of people said that I'd better do a traineeship or so in my old field... but I'm really happy I chose the second bachelor, because it fits me better (imo) and I can say it's bringing me more joy and sparks curiosity more than my first one ^^

It's a textbook case of "the grass is always greener", is it not? If you take the academic route, you can easily end up as a 40 year old without a permanent faculty job, no real savings, still renting, and unable to afford to start a family. You then start to envy your peers at university who are now married professionals with a home, car, kids and enough money to afford a couple of holidays every year. Whereas if you go down the professional 'corporate' route, you can get bogged down with the monotony of the day-to-day work and fantasize about the type of intellectual freedom and satisfaction you could have had if you remained in academia. There's no easy answer to this question. Only you know what you want out of life. But you're still very young and it's perfectly feasible to change your mind later down the road and take your career in a different direction.

Hi Paige, the transition from University to work is often pretty difficult. What you learn in university sometimes is way more exciting than what you’ll do day to day at your job. But you’ll find as you adjust that new things will excite you and you’ll get into the rhythm. COVID has really made it difficult since you cannot meet new people, get out and have fun, and do what you’d normally do post graduation. Hang in there and it will get easier and better 🥰
@PaigeY

Thank you. I think half the problem is I’m resisting the change at the moment and feel bitter about what I’ve lost. Will hang in there 💖

I feel really bad for all 2020 graduates, you all had what should be a really exciting transition taken away from you through no fault of your own. This is temporary though and I think once you’re actually in your work and surrounded by colleagues, it’ll be a lot better. You have had to put a lot of your life on hold for now but you’ll get to do everything you want again soon. And one bonus of all of this is you’ve saved yourself some money from staying with your parents; maybe you’re already on your way to building up a house deposit for future Paige!

Don't settle for a job you hate!! You are so young and talented and you may have a job that someone dreams of having (as boring as it is). Many many people don't have jobs where they can complain about not having people to gab with...or even holidays...or evenings and weekends off to spend relaxing or with loved ones. Time flies and living with your parents is temporary and comfortable, one day you will miss them. Good luck! Things will get better. Hugs xx

From my personal experience, pretty much most of people are feeling the same feelings as you: Did people forget me? Did they don't like me? If I will reach out will it even matter (and for some people it is really hard to reach out because they are really shy)? From my experience, it is pretty much worth to try to reach out whenever you want to your friends, cause even if they don't answer or something like that, at least you tried. There's pretty much no disadvantages.

I also finished uni over the summer and went into a full time job that's not my dream job either. It was a deliberate choice to go and work instead of starting a master, mainly because I felt that online education wasn't suited for me. But the lack of being able to go into the office and still living at home, not being in or close to a city is really getting to me. To the point that I'll start a uni course in the spring semester to have at least something to do in all the time I was gonna spend doing fun stuff. While lockdown A was quite bearable and I even enjoyed it, the last 4 months have taken a lot of life energy out of me. And I see this same thing in loads of people around me. It also made me think about what I really want to do in life and what's important for me to be happy, so I like to think we're all gonna come out of this a little bit more grateful and determined to make it a better future.

Still in university but it's so hard to maintain/make new friends, being online truly makes the whole experience so lonely and I totally feel the part where you talked about not being sure whether your friendships were still there. We will get through this--I hope you know how much we all love and appreciate you, especially talking about these hard topics online, makes me feel a little less lonely. 💛

I think the pandemic has taken away some of the upsides of having a relatively low stress job. Usually a low stress job means you can enjoy your personal time and follow your own interests and hobbies. In the pandemic, we can't pursue those things in the same way and end up focusing more on work for fulfillment.

Articulate and well thought out as usual. Firstly, I thank you for being so vigilant and sensible about Covid precautions, when we see too many influencers online simply not taking it seriously and risking others. You may be struggling but know that your caution has very likely saved lives. I appreciate you never coming across as whiny or ungrateful but you are fully within your right to feel this way. Transitioning from uni to work life, like you said, is a big change to begin with but you haven't even been able to do with with the perks that come with having a full time job. Hopefully better days aren't too far and you'll be able to enjoy your work and independence soon. I've been watching you since your very first video popped up in my recommendations when you were accepted to Cambridge. I have no doubt that you'll handle the work life splendidly.

Transitioning from university is complicated at best, but you and other 2020 graduates really have it so much tougher than most others. Hi Paige! I graduated from uni last year and started a full time job and I am also facing the same anxieties as you. Similar to you I also had the best uni experience with a great social life and a course that I absolutely loved. Even though I got to spend about 8 months in an office , I still didn’t find my work as challenging or enjoyable as my degree but I stuck around cause I was learning about a completely new industry and the new social life that came with the job was a fun one. With lockdown I’ve also found myself as lonely and lost as you spoke about. All I can say is hang in there and try to make the most of your learning’s at the job, hopefully this all will end soon and you’ll be able to enter the office again ❤️

I started uni this year, but I feel the same way. I was so excited about it, but now I just feel empty(?) inside. I love my modules, it's all so interesting. However, because everything is online at the moment, watching recordings, doing tasks and simply reading my textbooks, trying to figure it out on my own... I feel something is missing. I miss people, being surrounded by them. I miss my school friends. I feel so lonely because I've "met" my uni friends through chatting, and even then it's only for something study related. I hope you find something to bring back your joy about everyday life. I hope we all do!

I totally felt that transitioning to work, I also had the best time at uni and it was tough going to work where it's not as broad and stimulating. I know the first few years in most industries aren't that exciting, given you are starting out and learning, but I would be the biggest advocate for pursuing your passion and rather doing the thing you love! I'm in the arts and would rather do something 'unstable' for the rest of my life, even if it's not the most linear, than spend years doing something I'm not interested in. Life is too short to not do what you love! (Easier said than done, of course!) You might also find opportunities you didn't know existed along the way, that's happening to me right now :) wishing you all the best 💖💕

I just started my first job after graduation a few weeks ago and i can actually come to an office BUT the thing is.. literally everyone of "my team" is in homeoffice and i'm sitting there alone between all the empty desks and its kinda frustrating 😂 the only person i chat to during the day is that nice woman that comes to clean up and you cant believe how much i enjoy that tiny bit of a conversation everyday. I am really really happy to tell you Paige that I feel the exact same thing. every day I'm at home, and the university courses are online so I haven't seen my friends almost for 1 year and I'm also working from home and at first I was happy for this pandemic because I can work and study better at the same time when I'm at home and I have more time. but the thing is when you don't see your friends and you haven't seen your colleagues and you don't even know many of them. this gives me a feeling of being lonely, depressed and angry that why should I be alone and work like this or why I cant go out and spend time with my friends. I just write all of this to let you know you are not alone :) and all I'm doing right now is to keep on going and do the things I can do at home to keep my energy high like home exercisings or cooking or talking with a therapist about all my feelings and thoughts and... until this pandemic finally ends and we'll get back to a hopefully a better new and different life after the pandemic.

Hey paige! So I just finished my masters and am waiting to start my graduate job. But what I can say is that you shouldn't worry too much because even life as a uni student was quite lonely due to the pandemic, and I had to miss out on a whole year of socializing which really affected myself and my friends as well. But it does get better, I promise! I briefly worked as a graduate after finishing my bachelor's and even that definitely took some getting used to, because working life is so very different! (Especially the waking up at the same time everyday to do the same thing part). But that gets better too, because once you know your way around your work, you start getting more responsibility which challenges your thinking! So hang in there!! Loved this video as always :)

Hey Paige, thanks for sharing your experience on this. For myself, I graduated this year and was fortunate enough to go back to my IBD role at a BB bank, and am envious of your positive outlook. I was fortunate enough to get to go into the office for a couple weeks between lockdown 1 and 2 - and just the whole seeing my team in person was a fantastic feeling. Luckily HR have set up rotating weekly chats for the new analysts to talk over zoom, and I even got to host my teams Christmas quiz on Tuesday which was a good laugh. But for me WFH is not particualrly inspiring and I just want the new new normal to go back to the old normal so I can really live my life again. Fingers crossed for the future, and in the meantime have a safe and merry Christmas and a happy new year! :)

Thank you for (very eloquently) articulating exactly how I’ve been feeling. It has been such a strange transition.. I think the lack of graduation made it all feel even more surreal for me. I too went back to my uni internship for my grad programme, so there are familiar faces, but the isolation and lack of new friendships has been tough. It has even been hard to keep up the friendships I made during the internship. We’re all on different projects, we’re all so busy, and the calls get tiring too. Like you, I’m just going to keep going with the optimistic outlook. I know I chose a great company, and I know once things settle down, I’ll appreciate the Christmas and summer parties so much more. It will stand to us having to start our careers like this, promise. Best of luck with CS1! ❤️

I want to make a confession. I'm 22 y/o, an introvert and suffered with social anxiety. I really don't go out and only have few friends. I also try to avoid meeting them since March. February next year I have internship and I feel worried and wanna cry. I don't think I can't make it till the end. I feel scared people will judge me, laugh at me because I'm so quiet. I don't know how to approach and talk to people. More stressful is that I am the eldest daughter and I need to be responsible to my family, but I don't have car license and my parents will send me to the internship place. I feel useless. Sorry I just wanna share this here and my english is bad also. p/s: Thank you so much for suggestions and encouragement. 😭 I really appreciate it. I feel relieved and will try to change myself. 🤗

Your English is great! That sounds like such a tough situation on you. Thank you for being responsible in these times of COVID! I know there's not much I can say, but maybe this will help: I've been a "loud", chatty intern in the past and while that may sound perfect when one worries about not being social, it's actually not always ideal for an intern. I've found that actually, listening and showing an honest interest in other people instead of talking a lot about yourself can make a better impression in the beginning. I would suggest trying to find out (by listening or asking) one small piece of information about one of your colleagues per day (What do they like about their work? Do they have a hobby?) and then maybe ask more about it on another day. This could give you a goal for conversations and show that you want to connect and that you are interested in others. :) Being an introvert can be a good thing, and you are not alone. Good luck with your internship!

Hi, I wish you to find your internship wonderful. It will probably be tough at the beginning but I believe you would be able to get used to it fast. But if you feel the struggle is too much, maybe an anti-depressant medication could help you. It takes about a month of use before it has any effect. Omg no, don't be so scared! I've been through so many internships, mini jobs and job interviews and not once was it as bad as I thought. You're really stressing yourself for nothing. People don't laugh at others for being weird, that's just what we think but really everyone has their own life to worry about, nobody's gonna care that much about you - and I mean that in the best way! Just be friendly and interested in what you're doing, people normally don't ask for more. No office needs an entertainer.

Hi Paige, as always a great video. I've also just made the transition from uni to work as a trainee. I related to everything you said so much! Such a tough time to be making the transition without the social aspect. I've been going into the office sometimes for training purposes but everyone I've seen around the office is at least a decade older than me! I'm also working not far from my uni and the commute is very similar so I'm always reminded of it, and I often feel really sad about it ending, especially as there was no closure. Basically, you're not alone! But there is definitely light at the end of the tunnel. Good luck with it all and keep smiling!

i've had a similar experience in my job as a junior dev. this is my first job after uni too although i am a bit older than you. i also have been living alone since june so spent a couple of months feeling very lonely. i have had a friend stop replying to my messages but my other friends have been there for me. shows who really has time for you and wants you in their life still, even remotely. so many days without any meetings at all, and work meetings were often the only time i would get to talk to anyone in a day. i also used to cox at uni :)

You are very intelligent that's why we all watch you. You're very brilliant in keeping us entertained. You loved being at Cambridge too bad you cant teach there... With your Actuary job you are younger than your co workers and still have lots to learn so be patient. Most jobs that pay well will not be easy so make sure you enjoy what you do because money won't make you happy if you dread going to work. Merry Christmas!

Cambridge is a one-in-a lifetime experience. I doubt anything else could come close, in terms of personal and intellectual growth. I’m sorry that you’re finding things hard, I enjoy working from home but only because I worked in the office and got to know people pre-2020. I actually prefer work to uni but like you said it’s because you had such an amazing uni experience and a degree you loved so nothing could compare! I always say my interests were too broad for uni so I was happy to finish, get my degree, and have my evenings and weekends to read and learn whatever I wanted. If your company is like mine I promise work will get more fulfilling though as you get experience, start to be able to contribute more to a broader range of things. And the end of COVID will happen sometime and you will meet those voices on the other end of the phone 😊 There’s no consolation on the holidays though - for me I remember the holiday job I hated viscerally when I was at uni and remember at least my holidays are free and I have money for travelling now!

Hi Paige! I've been watching your RU-vid channel since the start of this year, and I must let you know that it's okay to turn into bed early even on a Friday night when I was in my 20s (I have since graduated from reputable university in Asia since 2012) because work life can be incredibly tiring, especially when one stares at the computer screen for such long hours (even when university life itself wasn't any much easier in the first place)! Don't worry. With or without the pandemic, the school to work life transition can be rough, but you will get used to it! Take care!

I totally understand how you're feeling being also a 2020 graduate. Honestly, I feel that when the COVID pandemic allows you to socialize more, things will get better. Last week it was really hard for me because I was regretting doing my Masters this year because I was feeling alone and I thought that I had made a mistake by not postposing the Masters for a year. But it seems that working at home feels the same too, at least I'm studying what I like (Astrophysics yay), so I feel relieved. You're so smart and strong, I'm sure that things will be better. Even though, if you miss science at some point, it's never too late to study your masters in a relaxed path when having your job. :)

I so understand what you mean about missing that fun transition period between finishing university and starting a full time job. I’m also a 2020 graduate and I was quite excited about working a summer job and then getting to travel a bit. Instead I spent most of my summer at home, and like you said, without getting to see any friends. It’s quite sad to think of what could have happened if covid wasn’t a thing :/

Hello Paige, I am much older than you and just entered my masters degree. As a person who loves academia, the feeling of being torn between two worlds is really daunting. I think that every young person experienced this at a certain point, and especially this year, with Covid stealing opportunities for socialising, managing stress levels and mental health is a lot. Graduating college and entering "the real world" is really hard, you no longer are a student but you are not a 'qualified' person for the job either. Everyone felt the same, I believe, and it's really refreshing that you talk openly about this topic. Being amazed and terrified of the knowledge of superiors is challenging, but remember that everyone has a person they think is so much cooier than them. I know you know that but I think it's nice to hear it from times to times. Never settle for a job that doesn't give you joy. I finished college at 22 and began my MSc in neuroscience at my 30s after working several jobs that satisfied me but academia never left my mind. You can relax, and I truly believe everything will come at the right time to you! I am not from England and I haven't really understood what actuaries are, but I think you are a great person with amazing work ethics and I wish you good luck! Covid will end soon and you will enjoy the perks of having your own money and independence. Then you will have a much more clear view on what you would love to do next!

i am not that far along in my life yet but i had an equally important transition i believe which was from highschool to uni. I never had proper graduation from highschool bc of the pandemic and just a lot of events that were supposed to happen during the summer just didnt. I still dont feel like i ever had proper closure from highschool. I basically started to study for both finals and admission exams at the beginning of the pandemic. once finals were over i just continued with the admission exam. the admission exam was reported of course so it was a weekend before the start of uni. It was just such a dellusion seeing friends in the past year graduate and imaging your own graduation. we were called lucky to even have some kind of an event that was just depressing in comparison to the original thing. My graduation day was probably one of the worst in this whole year for me. To all my fellows out there who also had some kind of transition this year: Let's fight together and make the best out of the life lessons that 2020 somehow made us learn. Love to you all.

Paige, you are right transitioning from University to a full-time job can be very difficult and stressful especially if you are working from home and you cannot meet and socialize with people in person. Students graduating this year in 2020 has been very hard for them especially when they enter the job market. COVID-19 really has put a nasty toll on everybody.

Also I think your first job out of uni isn’t going to be the best, but it’s refreshing that you don’t feel you have to be learning all the time, and if you don’t know something there’s someone to ask instead of trying to figure it yourself for the sake of getting you to think

Hello Paige I also graduated from my bachelor's degree in 2020 and it has been so hard. I studied oceanography and marine biosciences and due to the pandemic situation finding a job or an internship is almost impossible. You are lucky to have a job that you are interested in and you can work from home. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences through these videos, it has been very helpful. I have same thoughts in terms of the impacts of the pandemic and lockdowns on the socializing aspect of life. My insecurities are sometimes drowning me as well. Questioning whether I still have friends because I have not talked with them for a while. Though there are virtual meetups, it is not that frequent compared to the physical meetups in uni.

I can definitely relate to your situation. Being alone at home is so tough, it's absolutely normal to feel discouraged. From what I've seen with my friends, a lot of student experience this kind of feelings when they finish their studies. You suddenly change your whole organisation, you don't see the same people anymore, you have to make your own life choices... It's going to get better when you'll be used to your new life. And the pandemic will not last forever I promess. I'm far away from my friends and we regularly spend evenings playing Among Us or Codenames. Maybe you could do the same, to keep contact with them? :)

I absolutely agree with your whole discussion on COVID precautions and social life. *Begin rant:* As someone who suffers from quite a lot of social anxiety, it's so hard when someone texts you to "hang out" but you just don't want to put yourself and the people around you in danger. But then you just start constructing all these in your head, "what if they don't like me anymore", "do people like me because they use me?" etc... What most worries me is whether or not I will still have friends to talk to after this whole pandemic ends I feel like the younger generation (like you and me) have really suffered a lot from COVID from a psychological POV, and I'm so sorry so many third years (especially you Paige) had to miss out on the wonderful feeling of graduating in presence with your friends and family... As you said, "it just really sucks". *End rant* But put aside all these negative thoughts (which we *literally* can do nothing about, and yes, this is one of those few cases where literally is literally the only correct word to use), I wish y'all a Merry Christmas, get some good rest and family time 🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄

Hi! I'm feeling exactly like you in this video right now (although I now that it is from a year ago). I studied Physics and now I'm starting a full time position in Risk Analysis. It's like... I don't know what to expect, because science is so amazing and exciting, but in this other field I'm also thinking like you that it's not so amazing as science but well, anyway it's good and very complex. Challenging! I don't know. I'll start next week. I hope it goes well. Thanks for your video!! I follow you since long time ago and I didn't know that I was going to be in the same transition from science to actuary sciences like you haha. Now I'm rewatching many of your videos where you talk about that field trying to be prepare of what expect. Cheers!

I got my bachelor's degree in 2019 and started applying for jobs just as covid started. One company invited me for a job interview. I would have gotten that job but then the first wave + lockdown happened and I was told they can't hire me because of covid. Exactly the same thing happened again when the second wave came around. ...so now I'm studying my master's degree 😀 (which is fine, I am really interested in what I'm studying obviously and also I'll make much more money with a MA degree in the future).

Maybe I'm not going trough transition but I felt you, Paige, when you talked about friendships. For few weeks I've been thinking my best friend is going to turn his back on me and I'm still in this mental state and I suffer. On the other hand, what can I do? I just can't ask him to stay. But I'm glad my boyfriend stays by my side and tries to protect me from all the pain that could make depression and all the negative stuff worse. I still hope pandemic will come to an end and we will come back to normal lives. Stay safe

I'm in the same situation as Paige and I related to this video so hard! In fact, just yesterday I had a conversation with my mum about how much I miss living and socializing with people of the same age. I'm really lucky to have a job and stay with my parents, but the lack of social life has really been taking a toll on my mental health. I feel like Paige has given words to my thoughts. Hi Paige 😁 this is the first time I comment on one if your videos, I graduated from university this year too and I think I understand how you're feeling. I think most of people who are our age are going through similar situations. These feelings of complete change and loneliness are quite overwhelming... The thing that is helping me the most is being open with people, talking about my feelings with my closest ones. I've that conversations with my cousin that I never imagined I'd have with her😂 and not only with my closest ones, talking to other friends or collegues freely about this topic helps them to gain confidence and talk about them too, it really helps making better relationships with them and you realize we are all going through the same and we can support eachother. Hope the best for you! greetings from Spain!😊

Thank you for your honest video! I can really relate to a lot of your experiences and it's good to know that we're not alone with this - i just graduated and luckily started a new job this summer. Though I was in some aspect lucky that I haven't been in home office all the time, I had to move to a new city for the job. So because of the pandemic I can't get to know any new people here and I've been spending most of my free time being alone in the new flat. Some of my friends from university had a hard time finding a job because of the pandemic and it was hard on us all that we couldn't really the enjoy the time after graduation, as we expected to. I wish you and everyone else all the best, and I hope that this pandemic will end as soon as possible (and I'm really glad for all of you in the UK that you could already start with vaccinations!)

Where I live in Australia I was in total lockdown for about 8 months, with a short break in the middle before our second wave. Maybe you could think about moving into a sharehouse? I found that living with lots of other people really helped me. Yes we did get sick of each other at a certain point but we also had the choice to just hide in our rooms and give each other space. I also found doing home workouts really helped my mood! I did a workout from RU-vid most days. Other than that it is a tough transition. I find scheduling Zoom catch ups, making group chats, playing among us with friends, playing skribbl.io and other things like that really helped!
