The Unluckiest Bounce in AFL History

This video has now been reduced to a two minute segment. This is due to a copyright claim on footage of the grand final. If you would like to imagine what I said, it was basically that the Saints were good and it was a shame they lost. Anyway I hope everyone had a good Easter and how good are the Saints now. Knock Knock haha, righto I guess I better be getting out of here. Thanks for watching everyone, and pretty filthy of RU-vid to kill this video but what can you do

As a massive saints fan I can honestly say this video was a near perfect analysis of the club's so close but so far premiership in that 2000s era. I've never been more nervous since I was 11 years old in the loungeroom screaming at the tv celebrating before I realised the ball bounced the wrong way and it was just a point. It wasn't as bad as 2009 when I ran to my room crying, but man, it is pretty haunting as a saints fan to be that close and still not bag the flag. For the record, I personally love rewatching the 2010 grand final draw and it is still my favourite grand finals because it's the highlight of st kilda's history (66 is a very old game to watch in full when comparing). But yes, it is haunting as hell for any st kilda fan and to be honest, it doesn't get much crueler than that. All I can say is, when we finally do snare that second flag the scenes will be insane. There's a longggg way to go though until that happens. Cheers for making this video, I'm curious to know which team you support after seeing your videos on port adelaide and st kilda's era's.

Nothing unlucky about it, Milne was a deer in headlights, overwhelmed by the burden of the most important moment of his career he panicked and crumbled. That ball popped up right in front of him and was clearly heading for the behinds, he cost himself and his team a premiership and calling it luck is taking too much credit away from what he was capable of 99% of the time. Im not trying to have too much of a crack at the bloke, he was one of the best small forwards of all time and he knows more than any of us how different things could have been had he taken his opportunity but unfortunately for him and St. Kilda, in that moment he choked, end of story.
@chipcity3016
@chipcity3016 2 года назад
I totally agree! was there and was right behind the play. Sorry to say it saints fans but Milne shit himself, he short armed the ball to settle for the behind, rather than doing what he does best, kick opportunistic goals. My position on this is strong and unwavering. With his skill he could easily have of gathered the ball, IMO he cost Stkilda the game. He let Collingwood off the hook and the rest is history.

As a Collingwood supporter I feel for the saints, I was 7 during 2010 and was watching it on the TV and I could not believe it, although we won the next week which will forever be a great day in my life, my dad who went can't stand talking about that grand final. Everyone was just so shocked, my uncle left his seat and went down the stairs in the dying minutes, he couldn't watch it, he couldn't stand to see another Collingwood Grand Final loss, but as we all know, the ball bounced through for a point, and thank god the next week we won. As a more mature person, I couldn't stand what happened in 2018, you get so close, but yet so far. I still think about all the "what if's" in that grand final, what if the runner didn't get in the way, what if it was paid a block against maynard, what if sheed missed. But these things can't change the outcome of the result oh well. I hope it is our year this year, but after 2 appalling loses i'm not so sure anymore. Lucky for you saints, you look like a deadly threat this year. Butler is the pickup of the year, king is having a great first year, everyone is playing well, and beating richmond and port cements your side as a real threat. I hope Collingwood wins in 2020, but if i could have any other side to win, I'd love to see the saints on top again, you guys need it.

This still hurts 😢 As a Saints fan this moment will haunt me forever I think😢 If we couldn’t win a premiership with the absolutely amazing group of players that we had back then, then how the hell are we ever going to win one ❤️🤍🖤 The AFL rules to replay the GF the following week if the result was a draw was an absolute disgrace 🤬 If had have continued playing extra time that day I feel that we had the momentum to finally hold up our 2nd premiership cup, but instead the window of winning our 2nd flag had not only been slammed shut, it had been boarded and nailed shut. There’s never been a doubt in my mind that at that moment, if there had been more effort to get the ball instead of pre-empting & starting to all but celebrate the goal that he thought he was going to kick he should have put effort in actually getting TO the ball & kicking a goal or at the very least throwing himself over the ball to rush thru a point. It’s still gut wrenchingly painful to watch the THE moment that we managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. We didn’t have a hope in hell of winning the following week, we were mentally cooked. Hence why , 12 years on, there is still only 1 solitary premiership cup sitting by itself in the cabinet at Moorabbin 😭🤦🏻‍♀️

The saints while having some good teams over the years are just irrelevant when it comes to the AFL And where’s why… Tallying all their games together they’ve got a 39% win record… it’s the 4th worst the 3 clubs who’s worse are The Brisbane bears Gold cast suns University They’ve lost by 100+ points a total of 43 times which is the most out of everyone, The next worst is Melbourne on 28 times From the original Victorian clubs they are 1 flag from 8 grand finals making it a 18.75 win percentage. The worst out of every Victorian club The only clubs worse than that who’ have played in grand finals are GWS and FREO who are 0/1 in GF’s They hold the record for the lowest score in an AFL/VFL match being 1 behind The 2nd lowest score which they achieved twice with 2 behinds and then again twice with a score of 3 behinds. Everyone knows the wooden spoon tally or well should but anyway they’re currently on 27.. Norfs spoon this year takes them to 15, they’ve won the 2nd most spoons still miles behind stkilda though… They won 6 spoons in a row, the most of any club… all be it was the early stages of the game but everyone started out at the same time… Everyone’s aways going on about a team going through the whole season undefeated! Well how about teams going through the whole season with out a win? Don’t worry the saints got you covered there too They’ve gone through a season with 0 wins 4 times, the most out of any club in the history of the game… During the late 80’s early 90’s with all the merger talks of clubs like Footscray Fitzroy north Richmond Melbourne hawthorn I can only imagine stkilda just sitting in the corner hoping no attention was bought to them. Same thing now with all the talk of relocating a club to Tasmania… how they’ve survived through everything is beyond me 22 ex stkilda players have won a flag with another team. 2 more than there are actual stkilda premiership players

St Kilda under Ross Lyon were anything but fun. They got exactly what they deserved in 2009 and 2010. They had a forward line like that and yet they chose to play in a manner which didn't so much fail to advantage them but actively DISadvantaged them. Nobody else to blame but themselves, and their coach. Sacking Grant Thomas was a grave error in judgement. Now THAT was a fun team to watch, with an approach that would have eventually yielded the ultimate success. Also, the bounce you refer to only followed an equally lucky bounce. Swings and roundabouts. Ultimately the drawn 2010 Grand Final must surely go down as one of the most unwatchable in football history (rivalling the 2005 ugly duckling floodathon), played between one side who insisted on going backwards and sideways and another who insisted on attacking only via the cape, if at all. The worst part of that match was that we had to tolerate the same "spectacle" not once, but twice.

It wasn’t the bounce! I was there that day. standing right behind the final play. As Milne ran to the ball I turned my back knowing that Milne would gather the ball and kick the winning goal. My mate nudged me and said it’s a point. I turned around in disbelief. Impossible how why? Milne IMO panicked, he seemed to let the ball go, not scoop it in and instead settled for the point. A staggering decision from a typically hungry and opportunistic highly skilled forward known as the tip rat. In short Milne shit himself and made a huge blunder in letting the ball go. It was not the bounce.

That was great! Personally I feel like enough time has passed where the losses don't hurt as much, and I can just enjoy that era for what it was. We had a strong team and had fierce rivalries with the other contenders. Given our dismal history at St. Kilda, I actually look back at that whole period quite fondly now. I was privileged to be there and experience all of that, and the second premiership will come with time.

I still remember watching the Grand Final that day......I was with my family, half the house were Collingwood and 1 qtr of the house were Saints (the other qtr were other teams). It was intense, we were talking crap, cheering when our team scored, booing when the other scored........When that ball bounced......the whole house was shocked......it was unbelievable.......not long after the match was over and it was a draw......stunned silence filled the house.....I was feeling a number of emotions.....but the one that popped up most was relieved......It wasn't over.......Collingwood started the game out strong and looked to be winning that game (much like 2018) but things took a turn for the worse.......St.Kilda looked like they were on a mission.....no one could stop them......As the game went on and the Saints got closer to our score.....I got nervous.......I never thought that it was over even at the biggest lead, but I was at least more comfortable back then.....but now my heart was racing.......then it dawned on me "We're going to lose another grand final" The Saints were caught up and had most of the ball.....they were on a rampage......I knew it was going to end up being close....but Saints looked too strong.......then the leg break of the century happened......"It's a draw?".........I was so relieved......we got another chance to play again. The next week rolled around and as soon as I saw the smother of the century I thought "We're going to win this.......and it's not even going to be close" Then we went onto belt the Saints and avenge the 1966 loss. Just remember as a young Collingwood fan, I feel just as much heartache when it comes to losing a grand final as a Saints supporter........I've seen 5 Collingwood Grand Finals (6 if you count the draw as 2)......but we've only managed to win 1 of those........only just (taking into account that we nearly lost the draw)........Collingwood manage to make Grand Finals a lot.......but we have a talent for losing them.......So when we win 1 it is something very special.

Those 9/10 Saints just needed to score more, offence lacking in some big games. Everything else awesome.

The AFL fans were completely against St Kilda at that time, Ross Lyon sides are not fun to watch unless its your side and collingwood the traditionally most hated side in AFL for its toxic fans were cheered as they beat St Kilda in 2010.

Great Vids. Cats fan. You didn't mention Hawkins non goal against the saints in 09 could have swung it for them. Disagree entirely at the hypothetical that the saints best team could have stuck with hawthorn and stopped them. Ross lions game plan trapped them in a guilded cage, hawks attacked better then anyone in their day. Leavingluke ball off the ground for 10 mins in the last quarter in 09 was Ross lion punishing a player for not doing what he asked, cost them the game and 2010 when ball was one of the pies best players in the finals. That's an ego mistake. Can you tell I'm not a Ross lion fan hah

I mean there are so many what ifs, Goddard played a big part in that game and St Kilda almost didn’t have him, they wouldn’t have got him had Carlton not been busted for breaching the salary cap

I'm not a saints fan but watching this match with my mum who is was one of the most agonising football memories I have. We couldn't believe what we'd seen, I remember when Lenny kicked his goal that was when I thought they were going to overrun the Magpies. We both knew that was the game they needed to win and a replay the following week wouldn't go well. I'm a bombers fan but fuck if I don't wish that ball had bounced the other way with all my heart.

2010 hurt as a Saints fan. I just knew there was bullshit to come and that bullshit would snatch the flag from us, the most deserving team of the year

This is a really great video. I was planning on doing some AFL past what ifs. Another what if should have been that the VFL should have had a rule change after the 1977 Grand Final about Extra time after a drawn Grand Final. History could have been very different, especially in 2010. Hopefully you can make some more future videos on the AFL. Keep it up! 👍

After Goddard took that screamer and kicked a goal. St Kilda had all the momenetum and if they were good enough would have won. One rotten bounce can't be blamed for their inability to close out the game.

They’re both losers in my book. If your one kick in front or behind in the last minute of a grand final than you’ve failed

St kilda had another chance after that ugly bounce about 54 seconds left on the clock. The ball was at the guys feet and he spilled it when he could have snapped it. Not taking away from the unlucky bounce but it wasn't the last roll of the dice

Been saying it for years now, but people analyse that bounce to death without a look at the one right before. It wasn't even going to score had the first one gone straight. Pies were as likely to hold on for a few stoppages as any other outcome if that was the case.

Need to feel really sorry for Milne..as much as well all loved to hate him, you can’t help but just feel his pain which I’m sure he still thinks about constantly. You’re right when you say the bounce wouldn’t be as significant if they eventually went on to win the flag the next week or even in the next year or two. Imagine if Jack Darling’s dropped mark on the goal line in the 2018 GF with a minute on the clock was for the match...Imagine if the ball bounced up for Milne...
