In respect to this man, some schools changed names to Tom Mboya years prior to his death ,one such school was kongowea primary school on Buxton road Mombasa, it acquired it's current name Tom Mboya primary school in 1967 whilst Mboya was killed in 1969.

Tom was very ambitious and wanted to become Prime Minister at 30. In 1957, Tom was already planning for an independent Kenya with himself as Prime Minister by 1960. Until Oginga threw a spanner into the works in February 1958 by equating Kenyatta to Makarios(exiled Cyprus leader) and saying the old man was Kenya's leader. To Oginga's credit, Kenyatta was popular at the time, though not talked about anywhere in the country, and languishing in jail. It must be noted, however, that the kind of independence that Tom wanted for Kenya was dangerous, and would have led us to a civil war in the 1960s. In the absence of Kenyatta, and with the disenfranchisement of the Kikuyu under the state of emergency, it would have been easy for Mboya to become Prime Minister. However, many issues would have remained unsolved, key among them being the White Highlands, the land problem, and hence Kenya's economic stability. We would have established a country with a black man on top of the politics, but a white man in charge of the economy, like South Africa's present status. This does not sound like Freedom. And the government was not going to ring fence Mt. Kenya into jail forever. These battle hardened fighters would have continued an armed resistance in the bush, and it would have been a sorry situation for Kenya. And this seemed like the British plan, considering the fates of countries such as Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda, and almost every other British colony in Africa. Jaramogi's brand of politics seemed best of Kenya - send the white man away, let the Africa sort his problems in a truly free and independent Kenya. Let us face it, Oginga's elevation of Jomo made matters very difficult for Tom Mboya. Kenyatta's emergence created the foundation for a greedy leadership unaware of the delicate negotiations that had gone into achieving independence. It is under Kenyatta's leadership that Mboya's inconsistency and lack of political temerity and spine became evident. Mboya, at the behest of Kenyatta, participated in the creation of a totalitarian state through continuous mutilation of the Independence constitution, and other political actions that kicked out Oginga from KANU, and set Oginga and the Luo community to political disenfranchisement. Kenyatta's "thank you" to Tom, for all the great work, was a bullet into Tom's heart. Tom should not have joined that directionless gang named KANU. He should instead have strengthened the Nairobi Peoples Convention Party (NPCP, modeled under Nkurumah's PCP), nationalized it and considered a merger with KADU. That would have been good for Kenya's democracy. And he would have been President by early 70s. Anyway, rest in peace, Rateng'.

I really celebrated Tom Mboya,an intellectual property who could have spurred our country Kenya to heights unknown. My late grandfather was a maumau fighter,and he told me Tom Mboya saw what no one else saw. I have 6 leaders whom I highly respect me. 1.Field Marshall Dedan Waciuri Kimathi 2.Tom Mboya 3.J.M Kariuki 4.Robert Ouko 5.Pio Gama Pinto 6.Mwai Kibaki The 1st 5 guys were assassinated during Kenyatta and his successor Moi damned administration save for Mwai Kibaki who became the president and guided the country to unprecedented success,till it was hijacked by thugs,corrupt,tribal,powerhungry maniacs.They do so till today.

What has led you to think that by 1957, Mboya was planning for an independent Kenya by 1960 with him as the Prime Minister. Not that there is anything wrong with being ambitious or planning to ve a PM by the age 30. I am just wondering what has informed your thoughts.

Is that why Kenyatta killed Mboya? Be focussed. Competitive politics is perfectly in order. What's out of order is killing competitors.
@georgeodhiambo598
@georgeodhiambo598 8 месяцев назад
Are you a Luo? Why don't you comment on Kenyatta acceptability among Kikuyus? You have to understand the dynamics that were at play from the late fifties to early sixties that informed the choices that the various politicians took. There was the vanquished Mau Mau, there were European interests, there were the younger politicians, chief among them Mboya, who had taken a centre stage as the older generation were jailed, then the British Govt was keen to hand over power to an African Govt that they considered to be responsible. Then Kenyatta factor was also significant and played a major role in determining political alignments. Jaramogi and Mboya were not playing in a vacuum.
