You're absolutely right Erman never really had the big break that would have led her to superstardom. Unfortunately, this happened to many really talented artists back in the day. Thanks for sharing !

Great video! Aretha came from a magnificently talented yet troubled family…being a prodigy herself. Thanks for posting!

Truth be told her own sister sabotage their career every time she would get some hits that she wrote Aretha would take it on herself to make sure it wouldn't get much play. It's a lot to the story that you'll never know unless you was born and raised in Detroit and know their family my family has known their family over 85 years from when my grandfather knew their father 💯‼️🤦🏻‍♀️ Rip much Detroit love For Life.

Kind of disheartening when somebody's life is portrayed as "tragic" because they CHOSE a career path other than show business. 😔

A lot has been said about the Franklin sisters throughout the years - some of it fact, some fiction, and much of it purely speculation - however, with the passing of the last remaining Franklin sibling, Aretha, in August of 2018, many of the lingering unanswered questions and mysteries went along with her to the grave where they will undoubtedly remain forever. Despite the family's historic legacy and the astronomical degree of fame, influence, and cultural significance they commanded worldwide, the Franklins quite astonishingly managed to maintain an extraordinarily high degree of privacy over their personal lives- a feat regarded by many as virtually impossible, especially in light of the domeering (and arguably invasive) role social media plays in our everyday lives. That being said, the relatively shy and highly guarded social disposition of the Franklin family - Aretha, in particular- has not deterred folks in the least bit from inquiring and hypothesizing and theorizing about an entire slew of topics surrounding the family, ranging in everything from C.L.'s numerous alleged affairs with women of his congregation - including his (recently confirmed) impregnation of an 11 - year old neighbor's daughter and countless reports of nightly cocaine and Hennessey - infused sex parties in the livingroom of the family's Linwood Street colonial home, to multiple accounts of Gay and Lesbian orgies in the after-hours of the New Bethel Baptist Church (allegedly featuring some of Gospel's greatest pioneers), and endless rumors alleging life-long feuds and jealousies among the sisters over everything from shared love interests to career sabotage. Despite there being a reasonable amount of truth to these seemingly outrageous rumors, in all fairness, none of these events (with the exception of Rev. Franklin’s assault of a child) are in and of themselves all that unusual or even all that alarming. Inappropriate? Sure. Irresponsible? You bet. Unheard of? Naw. Drugs and wild sex parties and sibling rivalry have been occurring like wild fires ever since Noah discovered that liquor cabinet in the cave following the Great Flood, and Gays have been rehearsing in the choir robe closet ever since... uh...well I better not call out any names, but let's just say it's no big secret lol. The truth is, every family has its own history of secrets, misfortunes and wrongdoings, and neither church folk nor celebrities are any more OR less trashy or scandalous than anyone of us common folk, so it is suffice to say that the Franklin family is not unlike most any other family aside from the fact that they've been blessed with more prodigies and geniuses than most NATIONS produce in an entire generation and for that they certainly deserve to be revered. On the same token, it is nonetheless most unfortunate that neither Erma nor Carolyn were awarded the opportunity to showcase their abilities to their fullest potential - albeit in death, Carolyn has arguably received, at least to some significant degree, praise and recognition denied to her in life. But like the careers of Picasso, VanGogh and Zora Neale Hurston, the ever growing postumanous recognition and celebration of Carolyn and Erma's careers pale in comparison to that which had been enjoyed by Aretha during her life. On the other hand - and I do not mean this to be interpreted in any way as rude or disrespectful - however, Aretha’s exceptionally rare gifts as a piano and vocal prodigy by the age of THREE served as a sort of revelation of what was to come, and what transpired was a talent this world had never before seen and never shall see again. And for that reason alone, Aretha deserved every bit of fame she received PLUS some.

No, Erma didn’t write “Ain’t No Way” Their sister Carolyn Franklin wrote “Ain’t No Way” and Aretha sung it. And many other Artist sung it. But nobody could sing it like Aretha.

Excellent story....great job..Thank you. What do you think is the real reason she didn't become famous? She is beautiful with an amazing voice.....do you think jealousy might have been involved? Were the sisters always close? You do an amazing job in bringing these forgotten stories to light! Please don't stop!

Me personally I believe since Aretha was so spoiled by her daddy he single handily made her the star of the family so even though all of the sisters were talented singers Aretha was the star and didn’t want anyone in the spotlight. Tbh they needed each other because Aretha didn’t start blowing up until her sisters started writing and singing background for her

I didn't realize Janis was still with Big Brother and the Holding Company when she did, 'Piece of My Heart.' Most folks know Janis as a solo artist. Aretha was extremely competitive even with her sisters and was upset that Erma did a version of, 'Son of the Preacher Man.'
