*Project leader:* K so we all agree on using a hidden entrance behind a statue? *High/drunk co worker:* How about... you know? having Frampt eat the player, and spit them back out at the altar? (Uses a sock-puppet to mimic Frampts movements) *Project leader:* ... seriously man... Best idea I heard today! Scrap the hidden entrance, I think we just found the selling point of the game!
I'm pretty sure this has a lot more to do with the fact that Andre's original role was cut than it does with allowing the player to warp to the kiln. They could allow you to warp there even if the original entrance was used...
Or maybe it was gonna represent all the previous Lord's of cinder or whatever you become after you fill the lordvessel and become lord. Then they scrapped the room when they changed the lore to Gwyn being the original one or something. Idk, theory crafting
Imagine if all but four of the vessels were filled when you arrive: You come to the realization that you are the latest in a *long* line of undead who have attempted to collect enough powerful souls to link the flame. The last one _almost_ completed it, but could not defeat the final four. That task... falls to you. You are here on the backs of others that fell before you.
Maybe this was cut from the game because adding a static location to the kiln of the first flame means it would have to be visible from other locations nearby and since you dont see the kiln when you look down from the back of the undead church or from the entrance to the catacombs it makes no geographical sense. adding a loading screen and an indeterminate journey through a snakes belly/pitch darkness means we have no idea how far down the kiln really is. my point is, maybe they took it out for immersion reasons, otherwise you would have a situation like dark souls 2's iron keep somehow being above earthen peak even though thats impossible
I've been looking through all these "unfinished content" video, and I can't imagine what it must have been like to be those developers. Entire towns, even cities, painstakingly designed. And for what? Nothing. If it weren't for fans picking the games apart by the seams, no one would even know this stuff existed. Shameful.
It is a completely regular thing. With any kind of productive artwork, there an AMAZING rate of dumpage. For instance, if one was ro write a science literature book, he would have to do a ton of research and compiltaion of articles and references, but in the end, the said book would be straight up nothing compared to the original labour
At the same time there is a ton of stuff scrapped, there is a ton of stuff created intended to substitute the scrapped work. It was scrapped for a reason and most of the times a good reason. Not everything that looks cool in theory are not necessarily good in practice.
That's what happens when you have deadlines. It's still amazing that FROM managed to make the game as good as it already is, but i wonder if they had more time how they would actually change things for the better.
***** except for time of development, the limiting factor here is style. If those somehow didn't fit the style (like the Oscar questline doesn't) it would be far better to keep them out
I always pondered if those cups in the background of the altar are in fact other lordvessels, perhaps set as a memorial to other chosen undead before you who failed in their quest or who perhaps succeeded but not in your world. There's nothing to indicate you're the only undead ever to be chosen to link the flames after all.
well, there is a broken lordvessel in DS 2. Maybe the Lordvessel was used for purposes other than just being put in the altar. This also reminds me of that Dark Souls animation where Frampt shows that he has a dozen of Lordvessels with him as if it was a souvenir or something.
It would be cool if FROM remade Dark Souls with all of this alternate stuff in the game, like this alternate entrance, the village under Firelink, those manspiders, and that area below Anor Londo, as well as some other things.
he did, anor londo was supposed to be a whole city and not only the cathedrals only name we have is irithyll, the name of he city under (the new) anor londo in DS3
in the Ringed city dlc for dark souls 3, after the demon from bellow boss fight you walk through the same structure as where the frampt apears after you get the loor vessal and down a long tunnel where the statue originally was to reach the next area. looks like Miazaki finally got to use that idea
Maybe there was originally going to be a third ending where the player never encountered Frampt or Kaath, and accessed the alter by finding a key to the path.
POTENTIAL SPOILERS: I remember around last year hearing a theory that Andre might supposed to have been secretly Gwyn's firstborn, and retrieving the Lordvessel would make Andre open a secret entrance to Firelink Altar by moving the statue at Firelink Shrine where Frampt is.
this channel reminds me of nomad colossus. I mean, come to think of it; the way those vessels are set up really reminds of sotc(shadow of colossus) and their colossi statues.
Dumb people are saying they wish we had the hidden entrance... imagine if we did have that and someone found FRAMPT EATING YOU AND SPITTING YOU BACK OUT WAS SCRAPPED. What we got is way more exciting than the classic hidden path at the start of the game
what irritates me is that people kept asking for remasters when we don't really need them. The game is not that old and asking for putting back cut content now would be ridiculous as the vision for the game has changed due to the fact of course, there are now 2 sequels already. And see how pointless the SotFS changes did for DS2, what is the point even...
I never really thought about it, but in retrospect it is strange that Firelink altar is this platform floating in the middle of nowhere inside a large ancient building. It makes sense that they originally intended for the player to walk around in it a lot more.
I always thought it made more sense for those other lord vessels to be how many times you completed into new game plus...like for each new game plus you complete one would light up...centipede boss room has a wall that's shaped oddly like a door...but as we all know the lazy sadist of a creator didn't really care to fix anything just slapped paint over it and called it good. Kind of like my old bosses contracting company 😂
I always thought those extra mini lord vessels looked like you'd light each one up in turn, like you'd put a soul in each one, and then finally the big one would light up. And maybe they decided to simplify it and just have the one vessel that you put all the souls into. It's still interesting and cool that they kept them in the game, because it leaves you wondering.
What i would give to see Dark Souls 1 as Miyazaki wanted and intended it to be. After watching all this cut contents i think that it would have been even better. DS1 is already a wonderful game, but i think that with all those things it would have been even more. I'd really love a DS1 remake with updated graphics and updated gameplay since my PC cannot handle DS1 anymore. And if that remake would happen i would love to see DS1 remake as Miyazaki originally wanted DS1 to be. One day maybe.
We got the Demon's Souls remake, so you never know. Though I haven't played that one so not sure if it was much better than the original other than the graphics.
So in dark souls 3 we find that same satue in the ringed city DLC after the demon prince fight. That means that dirty old tunnel you see before coming to the ledge to be taken by gargoyles, could have led to the old firelink altar. God damnit
Cool to see that they actually made the path for the kiln, i guess they just added a loading gate from the drop off. I guess a 20 foot drop off seems a lot bigger when you are going through pitch black. Does this mean the kiln and Gwyn's boss room is where the catacombs are meant to be or more where lautrec is resting and new londor in real map terms
Memory limitations most likely. Loading that area on top of Firelink when firelink already geographically connects to like 4 other areas might've been too much for PS3 at the time. Dark Souls's texture limit alone is actually laughable. I can definitely see loading that entire area after you unlock the first time being an issue.
Considering that you cross a tunnel to get there, the area could perfectly be unloaded, just like iron keep/earthen peaks. You don't actually see any part of the one area from the other, so you could 100% unload them
Nooo I treied sooo hard to jump to either side of the rooms because I wanted to get to that path soooo bad, and now I see that it actually goes somewhere! Awsome!
There's an unused cutscene in game of Andre moving the statue, and there's a hallway behind the wall in his blacksmith place, and if I remember correctly he was originally meant to be a son of Gwyn
That would have been rad. It would be really cool if Miyazaki were to revisit Dark Souls 1, to make a "remastered" version, with changes like a finished version of this entrance to the altar, or a seriously overhauled Bed of Chaos. Just imagine what Miyazaki could do with it, drawing on his experience since DS1 and with more room to maneuver as far as tech.
Even if you think that that place is to place all souls for bosses and then open door to Gwyn. What happens if you use a boss soul item for BOZZ WEPONZ or for souls. Frankly, space, time, it is all convoluted in a this universe and you should just accept this chaos fire.
Holy shit! I remember that I once had a dream about playing Dark Souls and I distinctly remember going through that entrance, right and down the stairs. I'm majorly freaking out right now. Either I have seen this video before in some way or I had a dream about an earlier version of DS1.
the small chalices that look like lord vessels are actually lights, or lanterns. on the right side of the picture at 0:11 you can see the flame inside of it
i always wondered what is down the lord vessel and where is it located? if it's near the abys then why the player dies when he jumps in? even after killing the four kings
I believe there was a story of the OG story that Andra the blacksmith was a Royal smith and more so the protector of the wife of Gywn and it wasnhos idea to put the wife statue there to hide the entry way that very few himself included knew about it
Where did you find the artworks? I have most of the artbooks of dark souls- but this kinda stuff would be far more interesting as an artist. Interesting videos by the way.
yea the smith was originally meant to be the lost son. I suppose its good they scrapped that and saved the lost son for later. made him that nameless king for DS3
if modders could bring back all the stuff it was cut off the game with the help of the comunity in making it work like it was ment in Lore / Trcnical Terms
originally andre was supposed to be gwyns son and he would open you an entrance to an area, the door that he opens is in firelink shrine where the primordial serpent is in that statue, I think the door leads to the lordvessel place
pity they didn't use the andre idea, would be much cooler if you didn't have to be forced a load screen to get to firelink shrine. the kilm is the only area that you are forced a load screen to access, if not for it you could finish the whole game without a single loading,.
i meant to complete the game you don't need to go back to the asylum or enter the painted world to finish the game and the asylum is the tutorial, the game starts on firelink
You know "lord soul shard"? Yeah. Those lesser vessels were for those. Then there's the big guys. Then the final one ignites as a result and opens the door.
The path connects to the main player HUD area for the entire game. And the alter in question leads to the final boss. Some think there's secretly a way to light these and such, but this kind of proves it's just cut content lol
The firelink altar is under the shrine right, what else is under that shrine? The catacombs, Could that entrance there possibly just be the entrance the catacombs just not properly loaded?
The exciting part of this game is it's never ending content, even cut content adds more to the game. Which is the best part of this game. Thanks FromSoft.
