In the Cool Your Home Workshop, organised by the Blue Mountains Planetary Health Initiative on 3 February 2024, Dr Agnieszka Wujeska-Klause, Research Assistant to Associate Professor Sebastian Pfautsch from Western Sydney University, shared research on the Urban Heat Island effect in Western Sydney. She identified the most appropriate actions to lower heat in summer and guided participants in how to use a thermal imaging camera to identify which surfaces retain the most heat. The workshop shared the information needed to design cooler spaces and lower the impact of heatwaves.
NB. Thermal imaging cameras can also help identify heat leaks in winter!
This workshop was part of the Blue Mountains Planetary Health Initiative's Bioregional Collaboration for Planetary Health supported by the Disaster Risk Reduction Fund (DRRF). The DRRF is jointly funded by the Australian and New South Wales governments.

We need to act urgently to cool our urban areas before the next major heatwaves! Excellent information here.

These things are great for finding drafts as well- very easy to use.

Very scary looking at the thermal imaging of the roofs on the houses and also how much heat comes from the pavers and concrete

Yes it is. We did a workshop with first year Med students in Autumn (not summer!) in Katoomba, and they measured the difference between the heat coming off pavers, and the temperature under a large tree: it was 30C. They couldn't believe it!
