Beware of the "useful idiot." Learn how to protect your individual freedoms in the face of state expansion. The growth of the state can occur slowly, often at the request of the people themselves who seek more security, equality, and justice, which can inadvertently lead to a bigger and more controlling government.
The term "useful idiot" is often misunderstood as an insult, but its origin is quite different. It comes from the Greek "idiōtēs," which referred to someone who was not involved in politics or public life in Athens. Over time, the word evolved to mean an uneducated or foolish person, but originally it just indicated someone who was detached from politics. Today, a "useful idiot" describes someone who supports a major cause without fully understanding its implications, being useful to those who are actually in charge of that cause.
This concept connects directly to how governments grow in power. Often, they gain support from well-intentioned people who think that more laws will solve society's problems. For example, legislation against hate speech may seem beneficial, but it's important to question who will define what is considered hate and what the consequences of this definition might be. While these laws may seem to promote justice, they can also pave the way for the suppression of individual freedoms. It is essential to think carefully and value freedom when supporting new laws.
