Perfectionism may seem like a positive trait, but in reality, striving too hard to be perfect can have the opposite effect and lead to worse outcomes, including anxiety, depression, and burnout. This paradox arises because perfectionism often comes from the fear of making mistakes and the need to feel in control, creating unattainable standards and a constant sense of failure. Initially, perfectionism can help achieve success, especially in less complex challenges, but over time, as one faces more complex challenges in adult life, this pursuit of perfection becomes problematic, making it difficult to cope with setbacks and preventing the attempt of new experiences for fear of failing.
To tackle perfectionism, it is useful to understand the concept of the Discrepancy Theory, which explores the difference between how we see ourselves and how we would like to be or believe we should be, based on external expectations. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an effective strategy for dealing with perfectionism, promoting mindfulness, acceptance, and actions aligned with important personal values. ACT helps to observe perfectionist thoughts without judgment and to accept uncomfortable feelings without letting them take over, allowing one to live more fully and less restricted by the expectations of perfection.
