Roosevelt's seem like a bunch of ballers when it comes to almost dying. Teddy didn't give a damn and kept giving his speech, and now Franklin is all "That was wicked," when a torpedo almost fragged him and half a battleship's crew because of some screwup.

Concentration camps are internment camps for massive groups of people without trial, so they were concentration camps. It's just that the Nazi ones were so much worse than anything the Americans could have that made concentration camps rather synonymous to extermination camps.

In Naval Terms, there are several, such as the Vasa, the first 2-decker Ship-of-the-Line in the Swedish Navy, launched with great fanfare only to suddenly capsize and sink in calm seas just when getting into deep water within sight of port in 1628, and then get raised in 1961, and towed under her own keel back to port to become a museum ship. Similar stability issues plaguing the Mary Rose in her later years. A later, but arguable bigger question that is rarely spoken of, is the "Old Navy" era of the U.S. Navy (Post-Civil War, Pre-Spanish-American War) The spirit of the era is captured by one of the first Broadway songs ever made: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LpFh_9BEyOM.html

That's really neat your grandfather was at Leyte. My great uncle was a torpedo plane crewman aboard the USS Bellau Wood. He narrowly survived Pearl Harbor (his ship was scheduled to be in port on the 7th but got held up and didn't get in until the 8th) and was eventually KIA by a kamikaze attack in 1944.
@iMajoraGaming
@iMajoraGaming 6 лет назад
My grandpa got shot down, he was, IIRC, a bomber crewman, then later an escort pilot. He was shot down over the Home Islands or possibly Okinawa/Guadalcanal. The lack of clarity comes from the unfortunate fact that in 1945, the Japanese military fanaticism was at its zenith, and when he was shot down, they wasted no time making him a POW. World at War, the CoD game, got the intro right. Because in the dying light of WW2, that shit did legitimately happen. They utterly destroyed his mind and body in the brief time they held him before he escaped and was rescued. He was borderline deaf from having lit matches stuck into his ears, beyond that, he didn't tell anyone what they did to him. It broke him. It genuinely altered him. He left my grandma as a good husband with love and zeal. He came back, in her words, "a husk, a hateful, angry man." He either didn't remember, or didn't want to, where it happened, what they did to him, how he escaped, how he was rescued, but he was in escorts less than a week later. He actually flew part of the leg of the Enola Gay's run, he did a lot of shit in his life, including having pictures taken with future world leaders during their WW2 careers, including one with Lord Halifax, and one with Douglas MacArthur. He lived one hell of a life. I think a lot of the people in the Pacific had some of the worst and best lives possible at the time. The Pacific was depressing, but it was less scarring than the broken cities and shit you'd see in Europe.

My grandfather was spared by the fact his aircraft carrier took too much damage and had to return to port. He lost friends to kamikazes and would have likely died if the ship had stayed at see as he was an underwater welder. You know, the guys who go to the water level to use heat to patch a ship very likely leaking oil and fuel into said water, which was also shark infested. I didn't realize how dangerous the job was until I read an engineering book entitled "What Went Wrong". Yeah, not a good time for anyone on any front.

SuspectNutria considering rates of reproduction, yes all whites will in fact be replaced relatively soon. 1.8 children per couple just does not cut it. especially when the kids could get sick and die or go to war and die or turn out lgbt or otherwise ends up childless. so yeah we all are gonna be replaced cause we aint having enough kids and hispanics/african american/asian/indian/other are having kids. well japan and korea are having real bad problems with not having enough kids though, and china is gonna have a real bad time because of their former one child policy so maybe not asian. p.s. asian in this context means east asian racial/cultural group.

@bkjeong4302
@bkjeong4302 6 лет назад
In terms of "did the ship do what she was supposed to do" and "does the damage done to the enemy justify the costs of the ship", yes, William D. Porter was a far better ship and achieved more than Iowa. This is more about battleships in general being useless, though, than about Iowa herself. Iowa and her sisters may be the most advanced battleships ever in terms of stats, but they were already obsolete by the time they were launched. They were originally intended to be the fast arm of a battleline to intercept other fast-moving capital ships.....except that this never happened as the Pacific War was a carrier & destroyer war. The Iowa-class only sank a training cruiser (Iowa's kill) and a destroyer (New Jersey's kill), and even worse, they did it during a **training exercise** and not in actual combat: the two Japanese ships would easily have been sunk by air attack, had not the US naval brass spared them so the Iowas could use them for target practice (so technically Iowa's warship kill count is zero, since it wasn't actually part of the battle). In other words, they not only have a terrible surface-combat record despite that being what they were built for in the first place, but what little they did do was done only because aircraft carriers were held back on purpose out of pity. And even if you cheat by including escort duty (which wasn't what Iowa was supposed to do anyways), the Iowa-class are lacklustre compared to other battleships like South Dakota or North Carolina, or purpose-built AA ships. In the end, the Iowas never actually got to do what they were supposed to do, and didn't do that well at the roles they were forced into when compared to other warships. A lot like Yamato in that aspect, despite Iowa being more technologically advanced in most ways. It doesn't help that Iowa's 1980s reactivation was horrifically botched, and there was that whole fiasco behind the magazine explosion (and the victim-blaming that ensued), so she missed out on the Gulf War, which reduced her already-tiny list of achievements even further. Fletcher-Class destroyers like William D. Porter, on the other hand, were multipurpose ships for relatively minor duties (escort/AA/ASW), and despite her share of mishaps, William D. Porter did those things well, especially as an airplane killer. She shot down more planes than Iowa ever did, and since she wasn't expected to take part in huge surface battles, the lack of those battles doesn't mean she's useless. TDLR: Iowa totally failed at what she was supposed to do, while William D. Porter at least did her job. The US could have saved resources had the destroyer actually sunk the battleship.
@bkjeong4302
@bkjeong4302 6 лет назад
And yeah, the story of the last generation of battleships, regardless of nationality, is an incredibly sad one. It’s the textbook example of “why not to build giant war machines”. - All of them became obsolete even before they were launched. - Most of them had at least one design flaw, at least at first (whether it be horribly shell quality and lack of plunging fire for the Littorios, Iowa’s bad torpedo defence, Richelieu’s self-damaging guns until they were fixed, Bismarck’s outdated armour and lack of AA mounts, the lack of good AA guns on Yamato, Vanguard’s obsolete main guns....) - Despite the fact all of them were intended to kill other capital ships, only one of them (Bismarck) actually succeeded, and she was sunk herself days later. And some of these battleships never fought AT ALL (poor Vanguard...) And then there are the disasters and mishaps that happened to individual ships rather than end-generation battleships as a whole.
@willrogers3793
@willrogers3793 6 лет назад
Bk Jeong Well yeah...I kinda knew that part (the whole “obsolete at launch” thing) and that’s definitely the case. I freely admit to buying into the “romance” of a giant floating castle with massive guns, but I’m historically conscious enough to know how outdated the battlewagons were as a concept. I’m not gonna be one of those people who thinks battleships had any sort of crucial role to play after WWI (other than shore bombardment, they did quite a lot of that and did it very well), but I still feel a little sad that they just sort of faded away and were either scrapped or turned into museums. Kind of like the gigantic railway guns Germany made in both World Wars, I know they were impractical at best and a colossal waste of resources at worst. But just from their sheer size, complexity and the fact that they actually worked (to greater or lesser degrees) just captures my imagination and makes me wish they’d had more of a chance to actually do what they were designed for.

There wouldn't be much safety anyway. Torps are designed to take down large ships, there's no difference between staring right at the torpedo and running to the other side of the ship. Not even a small boat would help (I think at least) because of the enormous force of an explosion released into the water. The waves would just throw them around like Trump would do with swear words.

ricardo souza Yeah a battleship usually takes a whole bunch of hits to take down, unless you manage to blow up the turrets. Even the Bismarck, a glass cannon of a battleship (high speeds and good armaments but bad armour design) took a horrendous amount of effort to actually destroy. Not that this is of much use when a battleship gets attacked by a carrier that’s too far away to shoot at.

The Iron Cross isnt racist, Pygmy. Its not a nazi symbol at all, even. Just like how the Buddist swastika (the 90 degree one, not the 45 degree one just so we are absolutely clear) isnt. The Iron Cross has been used by Germany since 1871, long before the Nazi party was even an idea in baby Aldofs head. Saying the Iron Cross is a racist symbol is like saying the US Ensign is

Still all over there vehicals and medals. Are you saying Germany is still under Nazi rule, Mr. Pygmy?

Ok, story time I had two family members in WW2 *Story 1*: My great great uncle was a glider pilot on D-Day, if you don’t know, those went horribly for pretty much everyone in them. Long story short, my great great uncle crashed and died *Story 2*: My great grandfather was an A-20 Havoc pilot in the pacific. Lots of great stories there if anyone’s interested, but my personal favorite was when great grandpa Larry was flying a mission bombing Japanese supply trains (or something like that) and his bomber was hit by Japanese fire and wasn’t likely going to make it back to base, so he decides to try and make it back to base, so he tells his bombardier he can bail out which the bombardier promptly says no to, and when Larry (my great grandfather) turns around to tell his tail gunner to bail out. This is where the story gets funny, his tail gunner had apparently bailed out a long time ago (basically as soon as the boys realized they likely wouldn’t make it back, but long before they decided to bail out). They found the tail gunner later don’t worry. *Story 3 (kinda)*: My several greats uncle was a WW1 flying ace so that’s cool

Wheezi Aka: the only end-generation battleship that arguably was worth building (since her very existence cost the Brits a lot of resources), even if she was obsolete before launch like all of the others. Funnily how the Bismarck sisters, the worst-designed of the end-generation battleships, are the only ones that came remotely close to paying for their own construction costs (One becomes one of the only WWII battleships to kill another capital ship, the other becomes a hollow threat that Britain plays into). Not bad for two obsolete ships.
