'The Vampire Diaries' Creators Talk Season 1's Katherine Twist | EW's Binge | Entertainment Weekly

Every story needs a good villain. And for the beginning of The Vampire Diaries, Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) was that villain, the big bad brother who followed Stefan (Paul Wesley) home to Mystic Falls to make his life - or eternity - miserable. (And then there was Damon's whole plan to free the series' next villain from a tomb that she wasn't actually in, but we'll get to that.)
In the early days of the series, Vampire Diaries co-creators Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec worked to discover Damon's voice, finding inspiration from within. "It's just that inner voice that is so snarky, all the things you wanna say out loud but you can't," Williamson says during episode 1 of EW's Binge: The Vampire Diaries.

My favorite line in season 1 is Damon saying "please if I see something I haven't seen before I'll throw a dollar at it" lol I wish they would of said who came up with that line!

You can tell Julie put her eagerness for Buffy into Legacies. Kevin really is the brain's behind the show. After he left, the show became a Delena love story, whereas Kevin (like he said) wanted romance as part of the show but not the full story, he brought the horror and the stakes.

Kevin’s the reason the first 3 season are the best seasons of the show. If he had stayed on the following seasons probably would’ve been a lot different, and maybe actually made more sense… And the show wouldn’t have just focused on the toxicity of the relationship that was delena.

SO TRUE. the horror and mystery of the first seasons is unparalleled, even when they tried to replicate it somewhere along season 8 it just didn't have that impact.

Music from TVD has shaped my own life the last 12 years. I downloaded songs after each episode and ended up creating a Pandora station (Bloodstream Vampire Diaries Remix) that I have continued to listen to for years and years. My kids are now old enough to be huge fans of the show and they recognized song after song as they watched for the first time. We LOVE the music from the show. Like Mystic Falls, the music shaped the mood of the show.

The best parts of the TVDU had Kevin Williamson attached and knowing that he never watched Buffy and THAT is why the show was how it was makes all the difference, specially considering the low point Legacies is at right now and how it happened (and who did it).

The first couple of seasons were the best ♡ the acting and chemistry between nina, Ian and Paul was the best and I remember hanging on every episode. Damon was so exciting to watch and I loved the flashbacks of katherine ♡

I'll be 25 this year and TVD is still my favorite show I've ever watched!!! I loved the writing. I liked how they talked about the cliffhangers because that is really one of the things that made it great. It's surprising to know that the writers were rushing in the scripts and didn't have everything planned out from the beginning because the way everything came together with minimal loopholes was done VERY well! I'm so excited for these 8 videos!!

Have always said my dream is a new version of Dark Shadows and have always said The Vampire Diaries was as close to that as I ever got (all that was missing was a multi generational dynasty with supernatural secrets). And I love this show, like Julie what made me love it was Mystic Falls and by extension Katherine's history there with the Salvatore brothers and eventually the Michaelsons

I’ve watched TVD over and over and when Vicky (the actress) does the scene when she gets staked during the Halloween dance, that part still is freaking great! She has the most shocking look and she falls and dies perfectly on the floor 👌🏻

For some reason S1 behind the scenes insight with tvd sometimes feels weird to hear? Them mentioning the "reality" of filming the bridge scene in the pilot for example. I've seen the pilot (and S1-3) so many times - I mean when your party trick is reciting the tvd pilot script by memory with music transitions you know it might be a problem... or a comfort show for all problems haha - and it's so familiar that it feels strange to even hear about filming it, or not remembering it? Not sure that even makes sense. But regardless this is making me so emotional, S1-3 of tvd are everything and I love hearing from Kevin, and about Stefan/Elena, and the creation of a show that means more to me than I think most fiction should or could?

As someone who loved Sara Bareilles BEFORE TVD aired, I was SO happy when they included her (multiple times). But I got SO much other music from this show that have now become favorites because they're SUCH good picks!

I've rewatched this show so many times since first watching on Netflix as a teenager (unfortunately its not on Netflix anymore so I bought the entire series on youtube to get my fix for my TVD cravings lol) and it's just become a comfort show at this point, I love it so much ❤❤ One of my favourite Damon lines is "its a long story, wait for the movie" or "its a long story, buy the e-book" 😂 there are so many great Damon lines,and great lines from characters in general.

It’s also my comfort show! I’ve had it replaying and replaying for the last few years ever since I discovered it. I’ll go through phases where I also rewatch the originals but I always go back to TVD ❤️

I know… it’s always all about Elena which to be honest, is my least favorite female character on the show. They did Caroline and Bonnie dirty. Bonnie lost Enzo, Caroline lost Stefan and then she went to New Orleans to see Klaus and they killed him too. It’s ridiculous and all for making Delena happen.

Dawson's Creek really opened me up to Music and then Vampire Diaries was so huge for me I bought at least 2 songs every week that was on the episode if not more. I also have a apple music playlist of all my vampire diaries music and it is just so good. Grey's Anatomy is huge with music too. It just totally makes the show or scene

i NEED more on why some things were taken from the books and some not and why to each of them. like, i am a huge fan of the book saga and always wanted to ask so many questions about book-show comparison, especially because often they hinted to books’ stuff but never continue on it (ex. damon/the craw in the pilot). anyway, thank you soooo much for these show analysis, i wish you’ll do it for many more shows and also maybe with more writers and longer episodes?

I have vague memory from an interview or maybe a panel that they didn't want to make it too gimmicky that's why they didn't take the crow thing further. They didn't want to distract too much from the storyline with the powers. I'm actually happy they didn't stick too close to the books I could never get into them but maybe it would've been different if I read the books first.

Back in 2011, little 15 year old me wrote a script for drama class that revolved around a love triangle and a gargoyle curse in a cemetery. It was heavily influenced by The Vampire Diaries. I remember two years later the Silas, Amara, Qetsiyah storyline was literally the script I wrote and now it’s even more weird knowing Julie Plec wanted to include a Gargoyle in a cemetery coming to life storyline!

32:40 If Julie and Kevin wanted people to dislike Damon or see him as a villain again, then instead of making him kill Jeremy, they should have picked a character that the audience actually liked. Because Jeremy was the worst character. He had the least interesting storylines and being honest, didn't add anything meanigful to the show. Bonnie and Caroline had much more interesting relationships with Elena than her relationship with her brother.

Matty blue eyes isn't Matty blue eyes for no reason! Is that the Twilight book set behind Julie and Damon's crow? I think Stephenie Meyer did get the idea for Twilight from the Vampire Diaries books. She said she had a dream about a vampire which sparked her desire to create Twilight. I wonder what would've happened if they created this show before Twilight. Or did a movie?? I was really into Twilight and then got sick of vampires at that point. I wish I was into this show before. But I guess timing matters. I'm glad I came back to watch this episode. I didnt know they were going to continue it at the time so I didnt watch it. I was also really mad for the way the show ended and with all the other stuff about this show. I started with ep 2 with Paul and Nina 🥰 Welp, See you next week for season 6 cant wait!

The way people didn't understand Damon yet in season 1 bc they made him such a bad guy back then, is the reason why season 1 is my least fav season :( Also bc the other seasons were way better. And luckily that Nina got to play Katherine instead of an other actress, bc that would've not been as epic... No one's a better Katherine than her :')

Gargoyle in Legacies "worked". No it didn't. It was campy and lame and the show is a train wreck. The single reason I even finished the first season was the hope of cameos from the original show, which now that I saw Jeremy on it. Just broke my heart.
