A ripper can definitely learn control. killing humans is the default of ALL vampires not just rippers. just like caroline explained when she first turned, that the desire to rip people's throats is always there. it takes all of her strength and self control to not indulge those impulses instead of letting the blood control her, she controls it and that takes practice. practice that stefan doesn't have. he instead chooses an extreme where he goes cold turkey and doesn't drink human blood at all. this only worsens the aftermath of when he DOES drink human blood. because a single taste of it and he spirals. which is why when it comes to him, there is literally no progress on that front. its one extreme or the other. lexi suggested the same thing damon did to stefan in season one where she offers him a sip from her bloodbag. and elena literally was feeding him her blood last season to teach stefan control. its funny because we do see stefan stop himself when drinking human blood. he stopped himself in season one with the girl at the founders ball. last episode, he stopped himself when damon reminded him that he needed to, he stopped himself everytime he drank from elena last season so he could learn tolerance. which means he CAN control himself, you could say less so than other vampires because he is a ripper, but he absolutely can still learn like they do he just doesn't want to and that stems from issues mentally.

i feel like it’s a self hatred thing. He believes he deserves to suffer the way he does, and he doesn’t believe himself to be a good enough person to be capable of controlling himself without inevitably falling off the wagon again.

@@annabelledrake2027 no I don't think it's a self hatred thing. Stefan absolutely believes he's a good person. It's why he has such moral high ground. He separates himself from the ripper side of himself. He treats it like an evil version of himself. Like another person he hates. In his mind he believes "I am a good person. But if I drink human blood the ripper takes over and I don't want that because I'm not him" so he goes cold turkey himself. This mindset is actually one of the reasons why he can't control himself. When he shuts off that part of himself as though it's a completely different entity separate from him he's given it a whole mind of its own and he can't control it. It's one of the things that make people not like stefan because when he is a ripper his humanity is still on. Meaning he absolutely is still the same Stefan who talks about having regard for human life. The same Stefan who sees himself as good and therefore better than others. Someone like that should be able to keep himself from killing them. But he can't and still has such a moral high ground which kind of gives him an air of hypocrisy to me. But that doesn't make him a bad person either. Just Grey.

@@bellesvideos9578 I would say that what you described is in fact a form of self hatred. To hate a certain aspect of yourself so much that at your best, you divorce your entire sense of self from it, and then at your worst and you can’t do that, so you wallow in the self hatred instead, that sounds like self hatred to me. Most people who struggle with hating themselves don’t hate every single aspect of their own personality. They just hate certain aspects of themselves so much that it colours how they view the entirety of their self. Damon also has some self hatred, but he does a better job of coping by just conceding to his nature, telling himself that he’s supposed to be this way, and having fun with it.

@@annabelledrake2027 Sure, I can see what you mean. It just seems in contrast to damon who I would actually say hates himself on a general basis both his human self who was unloved by literally everyone and who after years of being a vamp I would say he sees that human version of himself as pathetic and weak and his vampire self who he sees as a monster and who he didn't want to be in the first place as one person. himself. he doesn't separate the two and hence decided to concede himself to being a monster in a general sense. believing he is supposed to be that way and finding ways to cope with it and enjoy it all while suppressing his humanity. Stefan doesn't exactly see it that way. he sees it as the ripper side of him is separate from himself and wears his face but is not him because he is incapable of doing such a thing when he in reality, is capable of that and worse. he doesn't become a different person on human blood he is simply a vamp who can't control himself. but the way you put it also makes sense. In some way it is still a form of self loathing even if he doesn't acknowledge it as 'self' in his own mind. Thats another way of looking at it.
