'Try to make ends meet . . you're a slave to the money . . then you die' - absolute genius to sum up life so succinctly and a great video - nice reaction.
For me, one of the best songs of the 90s. I loved the whole album. Richard Ashcroft is a talented man. And real. Check out 'the drugs don't work'. It will break you in pieces. 'Sonnet' is another good one.
"A can feel that shit". That sums it up, perfectly. Some songs have a soul, not all songs, but some do. This song is like, a condensed message in the first two lines, it says more in the opening, than some songs could never say. It's a masterpiece, and you can "feel that shit", because that shit, is real, it's Ashcroft pouring his heart out. This to me, also sounds very English, when i hear this, it makes me think of England, and it's culture and beauty encapsulated, which is strange, as I am from Scotland, haha!! This, is Britpop at it's finest. Kudos to you for receiving it, loud and clear
Hey RS.. What a great comment! Especially from a Scot! 🏴!😂 I had the privilege of living in your beautiful homeland for just over a year.. ( I lived in Fort Augustus for every season.. I was a climber) As they say.. A good song is a good song no matter where it's from! Sending blessings comrade. ☮️ And 💗 from the 🇬🇧.
The Verve is more than just Bitter Sweet Symphony. They are one of the greatest British bands to come out of the 90s. But man! What a song! Richard Ashcroft made something transcendental that will last forever. It’s the soundtrack to anyone’s life.
WOW, Loved this song as a kid, but never knew the lyrics. So profound that line about money, it's nice to see mainstream music still had a proper line here and there
Richard Ashcroft has to be one of the greatest song writers alive, this song gives a classic Abbey Road Studio "Wall of sound" those guitars, drums, vocals, delays, verbs on this is an eternal classic song.
Wow, this made me cry while listening. I had always liked this song when it was on the radio back then, but I didn't really know the lyrics. Man, oh man, they were right on the money. Thanks for putting them on the screen.
What's funny is after I reacted to it , I looked it up to see if it was on any films and it showed Cruel Intentions, so I watched the movie to see and it did fit perfectly
@@abracadabra3033 Awesome! I'm binge watching your reactions right now and loving them. I'll put in a plug for more Pink Floyd. Keep up the good work, and I'm subscribing.
I just wanted to tell you after watching a few of your video reactions, how much i enjoy and appreciate your music insights👍. There are too many channels in youtube which doesnt have the slightest clue!!! about music and its so embarrassing to listen to but you are awesome in another level , anyone who truly knows music can recognize that you are on point every single time and its so refreshing to have a man who actually knows what he is talking about and got the skills needed to appreciate greatness. You got yourself a new subscriber in me, much respect from ISRAEL.👏
love this song, and video. one you could try is "massive attack" with "unfinished sympathy" . similar kind of video..was a very popular song in UK, maybe in the US too, may have heard it. great song too. nice reaction btw, lovin your chill vibe :)
The Verve had been around for 8 years, before they finally hit it big with this song and the album "Urban Hymns" in 1997. The upbeat, halcyon days of Britpop and just come to an upbrupt collapse in 1997, and this song tapped into a darker mood in post-Cool Britannia.
this song is one of my absolute favorites. never really got the credit it desrved back when it came out. The Verve was a 1 hit wonder. wish it had more airplay. thanks for giving it a listen.
I remember hearing about how this music video was made: they had him walking down the street, bumping into people but those people weren't actors... they decides to get actors when one of the people he ran into tried to start a fight over it.
Absolutely LOVE your reviews ABRCDBR! This track is STILL an anthem in the UK clubs/bars! Everyone singing it! 😂 This and almost every track from Oasis & Arctic Monkeys are sung in the clubs & bars too! 😂 Especially here in the North. Keep up the good work hun.. Love your channel! ☮️💗🇬🇧
im always playing this song and feeling it when travelling through Say London with my heavy luggage and everbody expecting ME to watch their way..-)) then they get a suprise and I SMILE MYSELF TO NEXT DAY.
This song makes me think of My Sister (AKA Fozzybear), who we lost in 2015 due to complications related to her Diabetes. The local health trust kept giving her synthetic Human insulin which her body just rejected, this despite big red letters on her medical note stating "Do NOT prescribe Human Insulin, Bovine/Porcine only" Despite this they refused to allow her to use her own insulin and always gave her the synthetic human variant without her or our knowledge.. She found out about this and started a claim as she'd suffered massive problems in every visit to hospital for over 20 years, any overnight stay lead to weeks or months there as her blood sugar would tank or be through the roof... She was awarded £250,000 in compensation but never got the chance to spend it as she passed away before the funds cleared into her bank... This song was a favorite of hers, she even stole my copy of their album Urban Hymns which I didn't get back till her passing, I still have that same CD to this day... For 2 years I felt just like this video, nothing mattered, I didn't care anymore, "Life" had robbed me of someone with so much zest for life. Just gone in seconds.. It STILL HURTS to listen to but also has a special place in my heart for the memories of her inexhaustible spirit and joy of life it brings back, particularly this song, and others on the album. Sonnet, One day, Space and time, Catching the butterfly and When the drugs don't work... Miss you Fozzybear.... Always will... In the words of Stephen, the mad Irishman from Braveheart "I'll see you after..." sigh....
Hey Abracadabra, love your take on this song and the outside vibe in your setting. I Always got something special out of this song. Thanks for your reaction!
Thank you for your awesome review of this song and band. But most people are truly missing out on this band’s greatest music. I would recommend the Verve’s first album A Storm In Heaven, and their second album A Northern Soul. If you’re really searching for music that probably was inspired and was probably co-created by the creator, I would check it out.
The Verve are English. The video was filmed on Hoxton High Street in London. The song samples Rolling Stones. This was probably their most famous hit, but they also hit with The Drugs Don’t Work. The lead singer Richard Ashcroft also had a couple of decent solo albums.
Also the Verve made no money from this song because the rolling stones took them to court because they thought the sample wouldn't be so prominent in the song and ended up taking all the royalties
So this song was based on a Rolling Stones song, or an orchestral cover of a Stones song called "The Last Time". Jagger and Richards claimed writing credits and all the royalties went to the Stones former manager. So they made zero dollars from this massive hit until 2019 when Jagger and Richards gave them publishing rights.
The Rolling Stones manager owned the rights to the song "The Last Time" which the strings in this song are sampled from. He gave the Verve $1,000 and they received no royalties. In 2019 The manager's son, Jagger and Richards signed over all publishing of Bittersweet Symphony to the Verve.
There was a DJ (I believe he was in Atlanta) who played this song over and over again during his shift as sort of a protest statement. Of course he was fired, but man what a way to go out swinging!
