Richard Ashcroft and his band The Verve first burst onto the scene in the late '90's with a brilliant song called 'The Drugs Don't Work' and then there was this, and then yet another unmistakable Verve classic 'Lucky Man' and 'Sonnet'. They have their own unique style, and Ashcroft is a wonderful songwriter and performer from the north of the UK. Please check out their other stuff, they never let you down. Great reactions as always man!

This always makes me think of Cruel Intentions - which I bought on VHS with the savings from my piggy bank after walking to my local Blockbuster when I was 11 years old. Don't ask me where my parents were or what underpaid teenagers sold it to me when I was clearly underage and dumped a ziplock full of change on the table to pay for it. Either way - great song (& great movie lol)

This was such a beautiful track. It's crazy how deep you go on some of these songs, not because they're not deep but because for many on this channel are things that I really actively listened to during the 2000s until graduation. These songs always brought out this kind of heavy emotional response, and it's easy to find a lot to relate to so it can grab you, but when you grow while listening to it it can lose the emotional impact that you definitely find in these 'first time' reactions. Hope you're enjoying your vacation man! Make sure you're not spending too much time keeping up on comments and whatnot 😉

Genuinely think Bitter Sweet Symphony is one of the best songs ever made. I wish I could go back and hear it for the first time again. 'Lucky Man' is another huge hit for The Verve if you wanna check that out.

I'm surprised that you've never heard of it. "Bitter Sweet Symphony" was named and Single of the Year for 1997 and is considered one of the defining songs of the Britpop era. At the 1998 Brit Awards, "Bitter Sweet Symphony" was nominated for Best British Single. The song was released in the US as a single in March 1998 by Virgin Records America, reaching number 12 on the Hot 100, and the music video was nominated for Video of the Year, Best Group Video, and Best Alternative Video at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards. In 1999, the song was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song. This song was huge.

What we're really looking for is not found in the world of pictures our eyes report, but it's known as your Self is recognized, because, what but your Self can anything be known by? The grand realization of Who you are is the Source of joy. It's the Source of Love. Sharing that inherent joy is the joy of life, in whatever unique way the moment inspires you to.

Your comments after 6:42 are very interesting. I guess you could say however we choose to live our lives, we're all on our own 'hamster wheels'. They're all ultimately inescapable. If we do manage to break free from one, we very soon find another. We're all slaves to our own hamster wheels my friend. It's the rythm of life.

More 'BritPop' than post punk, but either way, a decent enough auld track. I think they had trouble performing the song and getting airplay due to a dispute with the Rolling Stones' lawyers regarding the opening refrain which they claim is a rip off of one of their songs. 'The Last Time' I think. This vid was shot on Hoxton High Street in North London. . It is a homage to the 'Fat Les, Vindaloo' and Massive Attack, Unfinished Symphony' vids. which both featured a walk down a High Street

The song was written by mick jagger and Keith Richards. This new arrangement by ashcroft made a lot of money which he got not one penny. Jagger/Richards management said yes we'll share 50/50.....50 for jagger and 50 for Richards. And quite a few years of animosity they finally recognised the version for how good it was and eventually allowed ashcroft some royalties..just saying I may not be %100 correct but that is the gist of how it went.love the channel. Thanks Anton.
@janfijay
@janfijay 2 года назад
The song on which this is based was a Jagged Richards song. Their manager at the time Andrew Loog Oldham turned it in to classical composition by playing it at half speed the recording it with strings etc. That's what Ashcroft sampled - the main melody. However ABKCO (Alan Klein) own all the rights to the Rolling Stones pre 1970 catalogue so the dispute was with him. I court he argued they used more than agreed. Ashcroft lost. After Alan Klein died his son was far more reasonable and agree to sign the song over to Ashcroft. Jagged and Richards signed over the song writing royalties too (the bit they did get). Last time I saw the Stones Richard Ashcroft was the support!

To fully grasp this song you would need to watch cruel intentions first as it features on the soundtrack. The verve was sued for illegally sampling the orchestra melody that plays through it the song. They ended up losing and settling with the creators. Still a legendary 90s jewel

This song was used in the movie Cruel Intentions gaining it more popularity. I've not seen the video. Her looks like he's just being a passive-aggressive ass. Those that he "assaults" are mostly oblivious to their surroundings and hit him too. Sorry, the video (not the song or lyrics) doesn't impress me.

I used to really like this song, right until I went to a local launch party in 1998 of the new Vauxhall Astra (a General Motors car brand specifically for the UK, Opel in the rest of Europe) and they used 30 seconds of this song for their TV commercial, which was put on repeat for the 2 hours I was there. Now I can't stand listening to this song as it makes me cringe. This is why I will not watch your reaction to this particular song. It is a shame something like that has put me off for life.
