Derek couldn’t have found a better person to help him with his car on that long journey. The quality of replacement parts these days is appalling, which is ironic considering the simplicity of design. Ignition parts such as condensers, points and spark plugs are some of the really well known offenders. I love that care pack you put together for him at the end. Talk about a great gift!!

Paul, another great video. Great explanation on on the condensers. ~60+ years ago in high school auto shop we learned how to test condensers. Another quick way the teacher showed us using a cheapy ohm meter is to connect the meter leads one way (+, -) and then switch them (-, +) and watch the needle move. If no movement, bad condenser. Of course, as young degens we quickly found out how much fun it was to "charge" a condenser, then hand it to someone. Haha. Have a great day and stay cool.

This is a good distributor rebuilding video. Supposing if the ignition were converted to 12 volt electronic, you'd be surprised how much more pep that flathead 4 engine would have.
@ModelA
@ModelA Год назад
It wouldn't make any difference. The spark would still be exactly the same because for 12 volts, you have to run a resistor in series with the coil primary.

The regulator in the one wire alternator will drain down the battery in a couple weeks. A battery disconnect is a good idea. Even the new style 12 volt Transpo D10AC (AC excite) will drain a battery in 6 or so weeks. The Transpo D10SE6(6 volt) and the D10SE8 (8 volt) are not available in AC excite. The AC excite is nice since you don't have to rev the engine to get the alternator to kick in.

I have to point this out. It looked like your finger was "shorting" across your test leads (simultaneously touching the terminal wire and case) while checking the modern capacitor. If you allow that then you are really testing leakage across your finger and not so much the capacitor. Human skin will show some resistance value albeit very high but won't be infinite (open).
