My wife got me this for our wedding anniversary yesterday and I am thoroughly enjoying it. A few people on reddit lit me up with "It's going to ruin your vinyl" but this review helped me debunk that. We will probably upgrade in the future but this works for the time being. It sounds great thru my bluetooth sound bar too!

I have this exact player and I am so thrilled with it, I was having a problem with the stylus jumping across my records because I play Bassy records.All my suitcase record players with the red stylist do the same thing. they skip. But I found this cartridge call Banpa cartridge with flip style needle. It made the tracking force a little heavier, but it sounds terrific now and it doesn’t skip no matter what I play

Hi! Thanks for the video! I bought this player at my local Walmart. I have the brown color and love it. Does sound very good for it's size. For my purposes, there is no reason for external speakers. Yes, you were correct about the sound quality! It has just enough treble/bass balance in it's reproduction of music. I really like your reviews. You are very accurate. Some people are just too hard on these little players. Their expectations are too high for something this size. It's space saving, economical, and sounds very good for the price point. You can also move it to any room. I feel it's a sensible purchase regardless of how much you are willing to pay. Great styling, sturdy, and it does not take up a lot of space. Thanks for a unbiased, accurate review of this player. You were right on point. I bought it because of your great review!

I've been following you and your channel now since not long after you started up, and I have to admit, I was irritated by the constant enthusiasm for these cheap players - I still had my 'audiophool' hat on, I'm afraid... Over time though I grew to love your enthusiasm for the videos themselves, for the items you were reviewing... it was infectious! :-) I really enjoyed the happiness and joy that came from the videos shortly after, and so I've been a regular follower all along, but having discarded the 'audiophool' hat, I bought one of these 'low price' systems just to see what they were all about; I appreciate your enthusiasm even more! :-D I recently bought a British branded "Bush" version of a suitcase player for a mere £29.00 (no Bluetooth though), and even as it stood, it sounded pretty remarkable playing older jazz LPs and 78s.... (I think I may have mentioned this before in a previous comment?) However, I've just installed a genuine Japanese Chuo Denshi CZ800 cartridge in the Bush player, replacing the cheap clone cartridge (which sounded pretty good!), and the difference in sound quality from it is remarkable! The 'genuine' cartridge has a much better mid-bass sound - it reaches deeper (limited by the built-in speakers), but it gives a better impression of bass, and the mids and treble are also improved; it sounds smoother, and more 'refined'. The Chuo Denshi original cartridges can be picked-up for around £5-£6 on the UK Ebay site.... just study the item photos carefully to make sure it's the genuine article ;-) For a suitcase player, it's a great upgrade.... :-) So thanks for all your content, and I really appreciate all the bubbly enthusiasm of each and every one of them.... it's a great tonic for when I have a crappy day with personal illness issues, or at work. Thank you :-)

When I attempt using the process in the video I'm told over and over by the Home device (and onscreen within app) to use the menu of the phone or tablet and look for "backyard speaker" which is what this speaker is named in my home network. I can't just select the record player in the apps settings, it doesn't show up.

It can only ply from bluetooth (bluetooth in) in the "BT" mode but the speakers are pretty horrible so why would I do that? Anyway I am returning and getting the Victrola Journey model that has BT out. Wish I knew that before buying the wrong model. So make sure you buy one with bluetooth out and well as in!

I have to disagree with you on a couple points. First, the only--and I do mean ONLY--real reason that these manufacturers use the Chuo Denshi cartridge with the sapphire stylus is that it's CHEAP--PERIOD. They save money not only with the cartridge and stylus, but they don't have to provide a pre-amp, either. And it's all plastic to boot. The reason audiophiles hate these record players (and I agree with you--these are record players, NOT turntables) is the crappy sound, not only from the Chuo Denshi, but the small speakers on the device itself. Yes, you can plug them in to a larger setup, such as a component (receiver, etc.) stereo system, but even then their sound doesn't come close to basic units like the ATLP60, which has a magnetic cartridge (another discussion, not here). Now you're probably wanting to say, "for the price, what do you expect?" And I agree with you. I am an audiophile myself, but unlike the extremists (are you listening, Michael Fremer), I readily admit that these players have their place in the vinyl community--or WHY would I be watching these videos???!!! I have always maintained that these players are perfect for kids or people who want a record player but are on a budget. These will do the job (just don't expect overly great sound). The other point is, I have always seen, and therefore am under the understanding, that records are made for a stylus pressure of 4-6 grams, not the 6-9 grams as you say here. I'm not doubting you, but I have never seen that. Could you show me where you got that (which would also help others that have the same question)? Regardless, a 5 gram tracking force will NOT (let's all say it again) damage your records. (but I will say that, due to the heavier force, it will cause clicks and pops earlier than a cartridge with less weight--but the records are STILL playable) This comes from the fact that when you go up the cartridge chain, such as the Ortofon 2M series, they suggest a tracking force of only 1.8 grams for their cartridges. Personally, I feel that this is a bit too low, and have set mine to about 2.2 grams. I've never had a problem with that weight. Keep them coming, and I'll keep watching!!!
@xaenon
@xaenon 4 года назад
I've seen 'official' tracking specs for records listed at 4-6 grams, too - and the specs I saw listed were from the early 1950s, when LPs/45s were still comparatively new, and the vast majority of record players used crystal pickups (forerunner to modern ceramic). That said, there were an AWFUL lot of record players that easily exceeded these tracking forces - most of them portable types, similar in concept to these Skywin mechanisms. Indeed, I would actually characterize the Skywin mechanisms as 'gentle' compared to some of the older record players I've seen and used. 4-6 grams is the recommended tracking for most of these ceramic cartridges because they are not quite as natively compliant as their magnetic brethren, and the heavy weight helps them track properly. Once upon a time, there used to be fairly light-tracking ceramic cartridges - Zenith's famous 'floating' 2G players, for example - but I don't think it's economically feasible today to make such cartridges (especially given that magnetic types are commonly available, and still technically superior). Do they damage your records? Technically, no - HOWEVER, lighter tracking DOES make it possible for records to last longer than what the original specs estimated. I definitely agree with you that the major limiting factor regarding sound quality in these players is those tiny speakers. They're completely incapable of reproducing a reasonable level of bass. A while ago I did, as an exercise in idle curiosity, go inside a Cruiser, disconnect the internal speakers, and hook a set of small bookshelf speakers to the amp output to see if it sounded better. It did, though of course it demolished any hope of calling it 'portable' any longer. The output wasn't going to rattle the windows, of course, but it did deliver a fair bit of range and much more bass than the internals could ever dream of. But, of course, in players such as these (cheap, lightweight construction, etc.), any significant bass note would likely as not cause feedback through the cartridge. They could, of course, do more to acoustically isolate the speakers and/or player mechanism, and provide larger speakers, but we know that means more money. And some companies (Crosley, at least, and probably others as well) do offer somewhat more upmarket portable players that address these issues to a degree - the Crosley Collegiate, for example, sports a magnetic cartridge, better speakers, more robust amplifier, a bit more solid construction, etc.
@Recordology
@Recordology 4 года назад
So it really isn't that a company wants to or doesn't want to or cant avoid the ceramic cart - but like I said in the video - the target customer doesn't care. This allows the sale price to be in the range of an impulse buy for most people. As for tracking force - I don't have the source in front of me right now. A lot depends on the type of stylus. An elliptical stylus obviously needs to track lighter than conical.
@7JANEWAY
@7JANEWAY 4 года назад
@@Recordology My point still remains. There is NO company out there that isn't out to make money. And one way they all use to minimize costs is to use the cheapest materials they can find. Hence, the plastic ceramic Chuo Denshi cartridge and stylus. Yes, as I clearly stated, this is for kids and those on a budget--which is exactly part of the point that you were making. I think actually we're more in agreement on this than it seems that you want to admit. And for those impulse buyers--many of them don't watch channels like yours, anyway. So if they're not watching you in the first place, then why would them being impulse buyers be a concern for you? It would logically seem that you would want to focus on your target audience: those who like to know what's out there, so when their kids or others that they know want to get into vinyl, they can steer them in the right direction--which I know is why you started the channel in the first place.

I dont have a suitcase modle record player because I have 3 record players not because of the rumors I hear on RU-vid I agree with you I have a sounddesign from 82 turntable with double cassette said the same thing I still play my albums from the 70s on it my albums are fine and a ilive blutooth record player hooked up to my sony system with 200 watt speakers sounds great el cheapo record players my albums still play fine bad reviews so dont pay attention

Those built-in speakers may look nice but they sound horrible that's why you have the ability to have two Bluetooth speakers better sound quality plus you could hook it up to your old stereo receiver

Stream it to a vintage style radio with old style music and old radio shows. That would be like the old record players that would transmit to an AM radio a long long time ago.

Yes, it's an impulse buy. I reckon that it's not a good thing. The idea of being able to upstream Bluetooth instead of downstream, that's is kinda cool though. The first turntable that had this was the *Cambridge Audio Alva TT* , it was released only a half year ago, but it's 1500 pounds!

There were a couple that could do it for 2-3 years now including the Crosley T300 - interesting feature but puts another DAC process in the mix of an otherwise analog process...

@@Recordology Yeah. Especially on an entry-level turntable an additional dac and BT controller pushes up the price quite a bit. Strangely there are almost no stand alone devices where you can just put a headphone jack in and connect Bluetooth devices to play both to and from things. Like a device that can both send and receive audio, a two way wireless connection. Especially since every mobile phone has a BT sender and many good headphones have a BT receiver built in nowadays, this would be very useful. I didn't know about the Crosley T300, I suppose they were way ahead of their competition!

I don’t disagree but I want to clarify, as others might have already pointed out, that while there’s nothing wrong with ceramic carts per se, these record players are built to a price point. The main issue is matching the impedance of the cartridge to the output of the amplifier driving it. Some ceramic carts need mega ohms of resistance in order to work properly. What does that mean? An increase in dynamic range which is basically the difference between the lowest and highest passages in a piece of music. THAT translates to not having to crank the volume up to 440 every time you want to listen to a record. In order to ameliorate this conundrum you can hook the RCA output of one these suitcase record players to an amp that can accommodate a ceramic cart, like the old Realistic SA-155, which is inexpensive and abundant on eBay. You can use one to directly drive speakers or as a preamp. Either way, you’ll get better performance from ceramic by just using one of those. I’m almost 60, so take it from a guy whose actually lived in a world where records were really the only option for listening to music. These will not destroy your records (well, maybe your styrene 45s). They might wear out a little sooner but I have thrift store LPs and eBay 45s that I know were played on Fisher-Price kiddie record players that are fine. These suitcase things are fine for getting kids into the hobby, and if they continue, then they can get a better setup later.

I think it's slightly disingenuous to say record players like these won't damage your records. While they don't destroy a record after 5 plays like some people might try to have you believe, they do cause wear to a record faster than a conical stylus tracking at 2 grams for example. There's a video on youtube showing a similar player going over a brand new record 100 times, after which there is a more noticeable amount of surface noise and distortion of the high end than there was before. I think it's worth informing people of this fact. They don't have to immediately toss out their suitcase player and get an SL-1210, but it's something for them to bear in mind for the long run. I can end up listening to the same 45 multiple times a day, so it wouldn't take long in my case for the surface noise and distortion to increase to a level where I would find it annoying.

Nope, not made by Crosley - in fact Crosley doesn't make suitcase players.
