Bears aren't as wood-bound as you would think. I often see them walking across meadows from one forest to another. Hence I prefer to play as a Malefactor, so their detection range is lesser.

If wind blows just the right way it can spread to grass even if you have cleared area like you did. I usually build a small 1-block tall wall around it to prevent it. That way I also prevent wild life wandering into my kiln pits while they are firing. I accidentally once started a forest fire, before I learned. I'd just started to play and had a grand total of five hours of game play exprience. The panic it caused me 😂

Yeah, i don't like the butchering mod , and i think you got some mod conflicting with leaning spears/tools on walls, as you were right. Bears will spawn anywhere, and they will also wander, and run around murdering wildlife like it will go out of style. It probably spawned far off, wandered until finding animals, then you.
