So when using this technique on Vocals, how much compression would you generally use on the "dry" vocal? I typically use serial compression on the main vocals so how much would be too much if you're mixing these smashed vocals in as well?

Good question! There are no real rules here. But you can think of it similarly to serial compression--if you using multiple compressors then you are probably compressing a bit less on each one. And similarly, if you are using parallel compression then you might compress less or not at all on the dry channel. The important thing is to play around with it to see what results you get, and if it sounds good to your ear!
