The Mac has been able to speak since its introduction, and today the feature is core to the Accessibility story for macOS. However, some of the voices available today are straight from the classic Mac OS. In this video I compare some examples from Mac OS 9 with some from macOS Monterey.

My first introduction to these was my dad's PowerMac G4 using the "announce the time on the hour" feature with the "Bells" voice. Good memories.

A few of the voices even date back to MacinTalk 3.0 in 1993. Sadly, none of the MacinTalk 2.0 or earlier voices are still around.

The Whisper voice should be reworked to say by default "Weird. Layer, 01", because it is the voice of Lain's episode titles.

These voices are now available on iPhone, including the novelty voices, starting with iOS 16 and it's iPad counterpart, iPadOS 16.

Bad news is just Ralph singing. Ralph's pitch and inflection can be changed which is what they used for Auto's voice with some extra editing tools.

The Fred and Victoria voices became available in iOS in 2016 with the release of iOS 10.

Alex was ported over in iOS 8, and in iOS 16, they’ve added all the legacy voices, including the novelty voices to iOS.

Most likely not, since they just brought them to iOS 16 and it's iPad counterpart, along with the rest of the Macintalk family of voices that were missing since iOS 10.

Does anyon know what happeend to the text-to-mp3 feature? Meaning when you used Accessibility > Spoken Content, you used to be able to right click on text and have it send it to iTunes in which it would creat an mp3 for you.

Sadly not all voices support this feature, due to the API it relies on being exclusive to the Classic Macintalk engine and it's Vocalizer counterpart.
