Sam Harris comments on the recent testimony of university presidents before Congress, along with Elon Musk's reinstating of Alex Jones on X.
He then introduces a recent episode of the Call Me Back podcast about the war in Gaza, hosted by Dan Senor. Sam really enjoyed listening to this conversation and we’re delighted to be able to share it with the Making Sense community.
Dan Senor is co-author of a new book, The Genius of Israel: The Surprising Resilience of a Divided Nation in a Turbulent World, which is a New York Times bestseller. This book on the origins of Israeli resilience-and what the U.S. can learn from Israeli society-is especially relevant since October 7. He is also co-author of Start-Up Nation: The Story of Israel’s Economic Miracle, which has been translated into more than 30 languages. Dan is the host of the Call Me Back podcast, which has been focused exclusively on Israel and the Middle East since October 7, with most of the episodes built around conversations with Israeli journalists, officials and other experts on the ground in Israel. Previously, Dan served in various foreign policy positions in the U.S. Government-including in Iraq for over a year during the George W. Bush administration-and as an advisor to Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan and others.

In "The Moral Landscape", Sam wrote, "Anyone who wants to understand the world should be open to new facts and new arguments, even on subjects where his or her views are very well established. Similarly, anyone truly interested in morality-in the principles of behavior that allow people to flourish-should be open to new evidence and new arguments that bear upon questions of happiness and suffering." They kept pretending to stop terrorism (the "revolving doors" policy), and in 2001, they launched the "second intifada," where suicide terrorists from the west bank murdered thousands of Israelis by blowing themselves up on busses and restaurants in Israel. Because of it, the C territories stayed under Israel's authority. Why do people never hold the Palestinians accountable for their own actions???

The settlements are actually made by private individuals - like Jared kushner. Israel does bulldoze illegal settlements. Well, I read Israeli media and have been searching online and can find little evidence of any empathy for Palestinians among ordinary Israelis, apart from a few familiar faces from the old left/peace movement, and certainly nothing from the Israeli government. I don't think most Israelis are rejoicing in Palestinian deaths, but they do seem to be consciously or sub-consciously blocking out what is going on in Gaza and choosing not to question the myth that Israel fights in a 'moral' way - warning civilians, targeted strikes, etc - which is clearly not the case. I also think Israel could have set up huge evacuation refugee camps across the Gaza border in the Negev and got civilians to evacuate there to safety, with easy access to unlimited humanitarian aid, while the IDF went after Hamas in Gaza, if it really cared about minimising civilian casualties.

Regarding Elon; media matters significantly manipulated the data to convince advertisers not to advertise on X; then some advertisers exited due to this lie. His statement was directed at those advertisers who hypocritically exited X while still advertising on platforms that have “hidden” algorithms and a much higher rate of repulsive content next to their advertisements. He then called out those advertisers publicly as their motives appeared to be malicious in nature. Elon is trying to create a town square of diversity of thought; while others just ban accounts when they disagree with a different points of view. I am a long term fan and supporter of Sam and I find myself agreeing with him on most topics. However, I don’t find his perspective on the current conflict balanced. Of course it can be totally true that the Hamas attack was an absolutely terrible war crime committed against innocent civilians but at the same time that the Israeli government is committing atrocities. It is a fact that Israeli officials have stated that “maximal destruction is the focus, not precision”, “Palestinians are animals and Gaza will be inhabitable for human beings”, “Gaza will be turned into a parking lot” etc. Civilians have been deprived food, water, electricity and fuel from the beginning and this has resulted in mass starvation. More civilians have been killed in two months than during 20 years of the war in Afghanistan. C. 70% of Gaza city has been damaged or destroyed (compared to eg c. 60% of Dresden during the entire WWII). These are simple mainstream facts for anyone to investigate and they have never been remotely addressed by Sam. I do miss Sam’s usual ability to analyze a complex issue and remain sober in his assessments even when the entire world resorts to black and white thinking. Since Sam is part of the Jewish community, this would be especially powerful coming from him. From my perspective it is obvious that both Hamas (clearly war criminals) and the Israeli leadership must stand accountable for all actions taken and be judged in accordance with international law when this is all over. That is the only way that we will be able to gain clarity into what has been going on behind the walls of intense propaganda that is being generated by both sides. If atrocities are being committed then the people responsible must be held accountable. This should be an obvious rational position to take, yet I’m sure that many in this chat would find that controversial. Why is that? Where did the civilized world go? If not even Sam can bring himself to resist tribalism / identity politics I think we are all lost.. Again, I am not a Hamas supporter (I hate them), I am not a leftist. I do believe that both Israelis and Palestinians deserve their own countries (the position that the entire international community incl. the US have taken for decades). I am a long term fan of Sam but I don’t find his approach intellectually honest on this topic.

Musk actually had a brilliant proposal on this topic (Lex’ podcast if I remember correctly). Israel should go out of their way to protect and provide humanitarian aid to innocent civilians while engaging with Hamas on the ground. This is the strategy that the US deployed in Afghanistan (they were extremely selective with bombing in civilian areas, never using bombs heavier than 500 pounds - Israel is routinely using 2000 pound bombs in residential areas). The strategic reasoning behind this is to avoid creating new terrorists. This is exactly what’s happening now, just look at rising support for Hamas on the west bank for example and the (tragic) rise in antisemitism globally. For every Hamas terrorist killed, how many new ones are you creating? That is the most important ratio to focus on. If less than 1 you are “winning” against Hamas. If more than 1, Israel is losing strategically against Hamas and will make the region less safe. One should also undermine support for Hamas by providing a political vision for Gazans. Bibi is instead saying that a two state solution will never happen (in opposition with Biden and the entire world at this point). That is a receipt for an ongoing killing on both sides (while likely keeping Bibi in power for the foreseeable future).

1. They ARE free to have any policy they want. And students and donors are allowed to be as disgusted by said policy as they wish and can choose whether to attend/donate accordingly. Which is what is happening now. 2. Who is the underdog on a college campus? And underdog of what? And does one's "underdog" status absolve one of culpability if crimes or atrocities are committed? 3. Students should be able to express their opinions freely but when this devolves into intimidation by large groups on campus or physical harassment (ex: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VmJrIuSJXcM.html), they have crossed a line. Given the urgency that the university has demonstrated towards the concerns of various other groups, the Jewish students are simply asking that their concerns be acknowledged as well. There is also a cadre of students that hold the disturbing view that one's humanity is contingent on their "position of power". I'm sure the Jewish students would like to be reassured that administration does not share in this dogma. The hesitancy with which the school administrators painfully delivered their answer regarding calls for Jewish genocide was alarming to many Americans. But understandably most alarming to a group that has repeatedly faced calls for extermination throughout history.

@lucay2222 Absolutely. Sam rose to fame during a period when religious debates were very popular in media. He challenged himself by directly seeking those who disagreed with him: religious "intellectuals" like William Criag, Reza Aslan, and Fareed Zakaria. Anyone who dabbles in some atheism can easily dismantle these religious arguments but Sam was especially gifted with his systematic approach and usually came out of these debates looking exceptional. Even his debates with Peterson and Shapiro end up with his opponents using religious ideals which Sam could deconstruct. The problem now is that Sam, intentionally or not, seems to forget that we are at heart, human first- meaning despite religious beliefs, thr vast majority of people simply wants their basic needs met in life and otherwise try to live quite peacefully. On the issue of Palestine, Sam has ignored historical, political, and economic contexts in favour of pushing a religious viewpoint. He has not addressed how decades of suffering could affect a populations development. He has not brought one pro Palestinian voice on his podcast. He steers away from those that actual evidence to support their view instead of philosophy. Keeping in mind, in his book, The Moral Landscape, Sam wrote, " Anyone who wants to understand the world should be open to new facts and new arguments, even on subjects where his or her views are very well established. Similarly, anyone truly interested in morality-in the principles of behavior that allow people to flourish-should be open to new evidence and new arguments that bear upon questions of happiness and suffering." Amnesty International released a 2022 report warning the world of Israeli crimes in Gaza, documented the violent murders, raids, and kidnapping of Palestinians. This is not religion or if it is, he does not blame Judaism for thr violence of Osraelis. This is human nature motivated by power and greed. Sam would debate an actual historian if he cared about finding truth in this. Read how disappointed some of us former fans of Sam are in his podcasts on Israel and Gaza. I am an atheist but not everything is motivated purely by religion and it is important to know which situations are religiously motivated and which are not. We are human before we are converts.

I’m a fan of Sam Harris work and this podcast but some of this was sickening to listen to frankly. Any intelligent person knows that Hamas are evil and their Ideology is never going to lead to anything good. It is also obvious to most people that there are a lot of people trapped in Gaza who have no way out of there and have no interest or wish to be involved in armed conflict with Israel. So to hear Douglas Murray make blithe statements such as on the population of Gaza booming in last few years therefore the Israelis aren’t oppressing them - when over 15000 of them have been killed in the last 2 months is just hard to take and massively biased to say the least. I’m not a fan of Netanyahu at all and neither are a majority of Israelis I believe but there was always going to be a response like this to October 7th. It should have been stopped by now though as no matter what Hamas deserve, the majority of people in Gaza don’t deserve this. If you don’t agree with that statement then I don’t know what sort of person you are.

Israel got attacked therefore they respond»
@motinuppi
@motinuppi 9 месяцев назад
Somewhat surprisingly that’s pretty much how it turned out to be in the end. There is too much acceptance to what HAMAS wants to do among the Gazan muslims for them to rebel and overthrow their bad leadership, even after several peace offers and land divisions were already proposed in the past decades. Every time the muslim communities neighboring Israel launch attacks against the Jewish minority, they end up worse off than they were before - and then rather than confronting their own mistakes, they grow more angry and bitter still… repeat cycle. The same people who already received Jordania want another state called Palestine, and with all the Jewish people evicted or killed. In significant enough numbers anyway. It’s not a “settlement dispute”. It is a narcissistic injury of the umma - the idea that where Islam has spread, it should never retreat. In this context, Islam meaning the totalitarian and authoritarian regime - not the peaceful habits and traditions of the every day muslim.
@synchronium24
@synchronium24 9 месяцев назад
"Surely this conflict is more complicated than «muslims hate jews therefore they attack. Israel got attacked therefore they respond»" Sam has let his viewpoint that Islam is a uniquely evil religion blind him to the geopolitical realities of the conflict. So even though he will, for example, criticize euphemistic "settlements" in the West Bank, whenever such Israeli actions lead to radicalization, he ends up circling back to blaming Islamic doctrine and anti-semitism. I'm not even denying that religious beliefs play a role, but they aren't everything, and the hatred goes in both directions. Simultaneously, he will interpret repeated Israeli expansionism as innocent self-defense. About a decade ago, Andrew Sullivan wrote an excellent article called "Why Sam Harris Won't Criticize Israel" that lays out these points in more detail. Despite the title sounding like an ad hominem dick-measuring contest, I think Sullivan remains fairly objective in his critique. But feel free to use your own judgement. Lastly, I'm glad you condemn Hamas, as do I. The far left has really dropped the ball on what should be the easiest acknowledgement of all time.

@@manofculture584 Well it is and it isn’t. The way groups of people get trapped into these destructive ideologies, how they function individually and within the collective, etc. - it’s not exactly straightforward. If we knew how to free people from cults, someone would have already suggested that instead of this stalemate that seems to exist since the original UN declaration for a Jewish state. If you’ve ever had a relative with a strongly held but very counterproductive viewpoint, you’ll know some people are just beyond help. A recent poll suggests as many as 7 out of 10 Gazans approve of HAMAS action, so it’s going to be a tough sell to get the remaining 3 to pipe up and start protesting, much less for the other 7 to actually change their minds.

Sam is a hypocrite. He has had someone on his podcast who disagrees with him. Who, you might ask. This very same, Douglas Murray. And the otherwise, utterly brilliant Sam Harris, who just can't get beyond his own hubris and arrogance, proves to have had his fingers stuffed in his ears up to the knuckle. Compare his bromide at ~13;59, "I stand by those words. Douglas is always a breath of fresh air and basic sanity. There might be some daylight between us on certain political questions, I don't know. I should have him back on the podcast at some point soon to explore that." Now, I don't have any expectation that Sam remember every word uttered by a guest on his podcast, but Sam actually asked that very question about the 'daylight between them' of Douglas the last time he was on. You are right to wonder if Sam only selects guests who will not challenge him. So when he does have someone on who does disagree with a position Sam has taken. Especially after inviting the discussion of it - then I'd expect him to recall it. Here is the segment I refer to, Western Culture and Its Discontents: A Conversation with Douglas Murray (Episode #281) at 35;45 Sam's actual words to Douglas, "In the service of looking for someplace where that we might discern some daylight between us ..." And Sam's response demonstrated in this video yesterday, total, 100% pretense that his advocacy for the abandonment of journalistic integrity is not aligning with the total idiocy that he spends his time bemoaning. I used to like some of what Harris had to offer. And I guess I still do. But I have a hard time getting beyond his arrogant posturing.

I really wish they would have more adequately assessed the civilian death toll. Or entertained other alternatives (tactically speaking) to eradicating Hamas without killing so many innocent civilians. I enjoy Douglas’s assessment of current events, but I think he’s taken an overly apologetic position when it comes to the West in general and nation states with a colonial history. We can agree that the “West is best” while still acknowledging that resistance by people like the Palestinians is absolutely inevitable without adequately engaging with them. Conversations like this seem to miss out on the staggering male unemployment and other conditions feeding radicalism in Gaza and other Palestinian communities.

You can expect resistance, sure. But expecting is not the same as justifying, and surely you can be critical of the form the "resistance" takes and respond to it as the violent threat that it is.

You are bang on. And you could go much much further. Douglas is a partisan on this issue who presents himself as a moral authority. To take just one thing he said and tear it to shreds as many many things he said here could be: "if u call Gaza a concentration camp then you are trying to hurt Jews." Two of the most famous people to use that term are Jewish: Chomsky and Finkelstein. While people are obviously free to believe who they will and take whatever side they like, both of those men would wipe the floor with Murray on the history and correct use of terminology of this conflict.

But I would know that tearing your math book, playing video games all day, and getting drunk on the night of the test is not it. I’m a fan, but I’m detecting some real hypocrisy here on this issue. There’s so much particular about the Israel-Palestine story, and I feel their examples are simply not good enough. E.g. Pakistan being legitimate for Indians. How is that an equivalent? The Palestinians don’t have a real sovereign state, and there’s quite a lot of evidence to support the fact that this isn’t only because of the Palestinians. The Gaza story is also warped to my mind. Average Gazans have been betrayed by all around them. Not just Hamas. They have been under Israeli siege for 15 years. Not the conditions for the Singapore of the Mediterranean. Ok, again, more to that story than just that, but really, I would expect these great self-proclaimed paragons of ethical analysis to at least encompass some of the bigger picture. Alas…I find there to be a huge blind spot in these guys thinking here. I can agree that most of the opposition thinking is lazy and hypocritical, but to find it here is disappointing.

Analysis of Elon Musk is on point. Douglas Murray however is a literary white nationalist who regularly echoes themes of Replacement Theory'. There is a total lack of balance here which puts the discussion firmly outside of the realm of journalism. It's both lacking in nuance and ignores the growing international consensus on the grave nature of Israeli actions. Very poor Sam.

Israel is regrettably so far loosing the information war. Already the second day after the attack, "nobody" was talking about the victims and the dreadful acts by Hamas. According all kind of high brow people, including a lot of well educated young Arabs from our universities, were taking the stance instead that Israel should be held responsible for any deviation in its reactions from international war right, treaties and so on and so forth. Moreover there appears to be a surprising connection between support for the Hamas/Palestinian cause and all kind of newer emancipatory movements in our society. While the Arabs who are from here supporting the Hamas/Palestinian cause, have in general not much of a positive attitude towards those emancipatory movements. How anybody can be surprised a revenge follows on cold blooded murder of hundreds of people is an enigma.
