The Wave Cave - One of the Most Popular Hikes in the Superstition Wilderness
EDIT - I made a mistake on the permits part. I have since edited that section out of the video so it won't show for future viewings. I spoke to a Ranger at the Superstitions today and he clarified that permits ARE NOT required for the Superstitions or Tonto National Forest. There is a small section along this trail that is State Trust Land. There are signs stating you need a permit to access that portion. I have never seen anyone from that department in the Superstitions - not that I am saying to not get a permit.....But if you are worried, you can park at the Lost Gold Mine trailhead just up the (Peralta) road and access the trail from that direction, avoiding the State Trust portion.
I am lucky enough to live close to the Superstition Wilderness in Tonto National Forest. The Superstitions, or the Supes as we locals call them, are a rugged and wild mountain range encompassing nearly 160,000 acres. It is home to countless maintained and unmaintained trails. Weavers Needle, the Peralta Trail, Battleship Mountain, Reavis Ranch and, of course, The Flatiron (Siphon Draw) are some of the more prominent features. Then there's the legend of the Lost Duchman's Gold Mine...An interesting subject if you want to do some research into it.
But then, there's the Wave Cave. The Wave Cave is a well known and extremely popular trail, despite not even being an 'official' park trail. The reason is pretty simple; it's a fairly simple hike to a cave that provides a very unique photo op. In fact, it's popularity is why I have avoided it for so long. But one thing lead to another, and I found myself at the trailhead. The trail itself is straightforward and very typical of the Superstitions. It's short and has a decent but manageable challenge. Then there's the cave.
I was very pleasantly surprised. After staying away for so long, I was able to beat most of the crowds just by going early. The hike was beautiful and the cave was very interesting. So if you haven't hiked the Wave Cave yet, go check it out. Hopefully this video helps you know what to expect.

It blows my mind how much of a pain AZ is in regards to exploring the land. The hunting and fishing permits have a lot of catches, you can't hike in a lot of places without permits, some of which will run you hundreds of dollars for a family. I love AZ, and I guess if you grew up with the requirements here and don't know any different, then you probably think I'm whining...but something about paying for a hike in a national forest rubs me the wrong way...Rant over - another great video!

I'm not going to say lots of people ignore the permit system out here, but......that might be a thing. Honestly didn't realize it required one until I saw all the signs on this hike. But I always have an America the Beautiful pass anyway since Tina and I hike so many national parks that require entry fees; it pays for itself that way. I'm not really sure why this is a permit area. Maybe it's just for the Superstition Wilderness? I know (think?) lots of areas in Tonto don't require anything. (Don't quote me on that.)

Actually went back today for another trail and spoke to a Ranger. He clarified that permits AREN'T needed. There is a small section of Carney Springs that goes through State Trust Land that has signage about getting permits to access that part. You can avoid it by going in at the Lost Gold Mine TH. (I'm going to go back and cut that section of incorrect info out of the video.)

Those spray painted arrows weren't there when I went in November 2021. Oh, and I had the trail to myself. Best to go right at dawn in the middle of the week. I did run into hikers coming up when I was going down. Weekends and holidays the place will be packed. It is an easy hike IMO. About half a Camelback. Cool video! Thanks for sharing it.

Definitely ways around the crowds. It wasn't that bad when I hiked it because I got there early (on a Saturday, even.) But it was filling up fast. Still was a fun experience. I picked it because I'm trying to build back up after COVID. Decent challenge for that, but easy. I was able to hit up Broadway Cave right after this hike too.

We tend to stay away from those popular "wait to get a picture" destination hike but maybe we need to rethink that as well. I mean, those views really are amazing with that formation. Clearly an area we need to explore more.

I did this hike a few weeks ago on a Friday afternoon and it was fairly crowded but not obnoxious. Families with kids, people with dogs. The last climb was a challenge for me but I persevered and enjoyed the cave at the top. Going down sucks! It was a lot of getting as close to the ground as possible. #noshame 😊

Painting rocks?!! AARGH! (That's what cairns are for--and many don't understand cairn ethics, either.) Thanks for that PSA. Appreciate the neat little "local" hike--it was local to me 40 years ago when I grew up in Scottsdale :) Maybe next time I get down to that part of the world again. Hope you are recovering well . I sense this hike was some recovery testing. And, always love the candid outtakes--often just as entertaining as the main video!

Worst thing is, we have a repeat offender out here known for painting arrows. They actually have openly admitted it online and defended themselves (poorly). Not sure if this was the same person, but I have seen their handy work. Drives me crazy. This was definitely some post-COVID recovery test hiking. I was able to do this fairly easily, but had issues with the hike I did afterwards. Back at it this weekend.

I took my 16yo nephew today for his maiden voyage to the supes. We did the Wave Cave. Not gonna lie, it kicked my butt! However, I'm just coming off being ill and haven't hiked barely all year, so that's on me. Also, it was pretty warm today for that hike. All that said, we LOVED it! So fun, challenging and great reward at the top. We'll be back, with more water (we ran out with 1/3 mile left), better shoes and poles. Be careful going down for sure, I have no shame, went super slow and slid on my butt in a couple places I love the supes so much, even when they're mean and unforgiving.

Look into Boulder Canyon Trail from Canyon Lake. And Peralta to the Fremont Saddle. Amazing views and not TOO difficult. Of course 'not too difficult' in the Supes means harder than most places.

I hiked there again yesterday (Aug 13th, yeah! In Summer! 😬), there was a maximum of 3 people at the cave at one point (me included). I have been there in winter time and yes, that’s when it gets crowded. Previous time I was there was December, and there was this lady sitting on top of the “wave” that thought she owned it and was ruining the pictures for everybody 😡 You can park at Lost Goldmine East Trailhead and take Lost Goldmine Trail to WC trail. No permit required. Actually, yesterday I visited Wave Cave, Shaka Cave (after you go through the fence make a right at the fork for Shaka Cave, then right again at the intersection), finally visited Dacite Mine, pretty cool stuff. I know there is a way up Dacite Cliffs to Robbers Roost, just wanted to see where that route is for a future visit, but couldn’t find it 🤔
@JerryArizona
@JerryArizona 2 года назад
I need to get up to Robbers Roost. Actually, I need to figure that route out (from both sides) to complete my loop out there. I love the Superstitions. That's my winter playground. With a backpack, you can be completely alone out there for days.

I have been to Robbers Roost going up from Peralta Canyon Trail, complete solitude after you go left at the saddle. I think, you can make it up there coming from Carley Springs waterfalls trail, but need to explore that route. I have only made it to Shaka Cave going that way 🤔

My second time there some folks mentioned if you hike a bit to the left of the cave (as you're facing it......off trail?, but pretty defined path I think I recall) there are some more really great views. Yes, there certainly was, and I'd do that tiny extra bit every time for sure. Also, I believe there's a campground just a bit up the road.........and the Peralta Trail. Just a great area.
@JerryArizona

When I was there, two people were going that way. I saw a little social trail. They said they were going to the Hieroglyphics trail. Looking at my GPS, I wonder if that trail they took (that I think you're talking about) goes up to the Ridgeline trail. If so, the views ARE great. I may even know the campsite you're talking about. Peralta is a fun trail with great views at the saddle too. Love the Superstitions.

SMH, it is not the “Wave cave” it is The Apache Kid cave. The fact that everyone could care less about the history of it is pretty frustrating. Jack Carlson and Elizabeth Stewart’s hiking guides refer to it properly.
@JerryArizona
@JerryArizona Год назад
I wonder if the Apache (or those who lived there before them) might disagree on both of those names. But I hear you. History can be fascinating. It is good that there are resources out there like your channel where people who want to know the history can learn it. But this is a hiking channel and I just wanted to make a video for people to see how to hike here. If I made a guide video to the Apache Kid Cave, no one would find it because that's not what most people know it as.
@legendofthesuperstitionmou969
@@JerryArizona there are books written about it under that name. “The wave cave” is a pretty recent tag given it. It’s named after the Apache escapee and former scout for the army known as the Apache kid and this was one of his hideouts.

@JerryArizona
@JerryArizona 2 года назад
I don't know. I don't really think that many people pay attention to it and I haven't seen it enforced. But I noticed signs all over the place. I think it may be more for entering the Superstition Wilderness than Tonto National Forest itself.
@JerryArizona
@JerryArizona 2 года назад
I was wrong. Spoke to a Ranger today. There's apparently a short section of Carney Springs that goes through State Trust Land that has 'permit required' signs posted. The Ranger said no permits for Tonto/The Superstitions. I'll cut that out of the video.....hate when I make mistakes.
