My friends at middle school jokingly mocked the basic and weird manga-esque designs as a comical way to aliviate the excessive tear-jerking cruelty of the plot the webcomics throw at you (to the point this whole story is hilarious to me as an adult, cause back when I was 14, I couldn't help overthinking for years if something this gut-wrenching could happen to someone irl). From a nihilistic depiction of a man's decaying life in the quest of happiness to a murderous woman finding love and respect after casting infinite hatred on anyone at a dictatorial war for her hellish infancy, only to destroy said love as an order from the faction she chose to join, but what's the deal here? Is it even worth my time? Nope!!!
The first comic trying to make me feel bad for the fake video game enemies is funny because in pretty much every shooter I can think of the enemy soldiers will have the most psychopathic, unhinged dialogue possible to yell during combat and constantly commit war crimes to make sure the player knows they are the bad guys and doesn't think about what the comic tries to show, especially when the enemy force is a PMC like in the comic.
Yoko Taro's games do a better job at pitying the enemies you kill, even to the point of adding side quests where you control said "bad guys" and their POVs hit you painfully in the heart. I loved NieR:Automata's "little machine bro collects water for big bro" level, or how satisfying it is to reunite a machine kid with his mom.
Finding out all those "try not to cry" videos with 7 Years playing over all of them were ripping off Epic Gamer Comic Number 4927 is definitely one of the more surreal experiences I've had lately Edit: 1K for a throwaway comment LMAO, thanks guys
I think the reason the first comic got so popular is due to it's emocional paceing. It's simple but effective, the plot just changes tone every other scene going from happy to sad back to happy and repeates until the happy ending. That's why the sequel is less popular, nothing good happens to the main character until she meets the sniper. The author probably stops near that point because less people where reading at that point. Also the theme of the first comic is definitably life goes on no matter what, which I think is a positive message overall even if it wasn't the authors intent, it is the result and people will never remember the comic being about video game violence nor the sequel.
I remember when my siblings and I watched this on our school iPads in elementary school and when our parents got back from an outing they were wondering why everybody looked like they had just spent an hour crying. Holy shit my taste was even worse back then

I remember not only watching it as a kid, but then getting it in my recommended randomly earlier this year. I did not know it had a sequel holy shit. Though you know what would be funny is ig someone decided to take these comics and recreate them into an actually good plot, make the adopted son the MC with all of the comic stuff being backstory, the woman from the sequel could be one of the end story antagonist.
I remember this comic was formatted into one really long GIF. I thought the idea behind it was cool up until they shoved in mercenaries by the end. I want more stuff like this. I don't care. If you have a story and decide to give it an insane ending, just do it. I encourage it and you should too.

To be honest, that webcomic wasn't really that sad but rather generic just to pull your heartstrings, even for the time it was made. So much wrong and rather unrealistic that instead of me feeling upset, even back then, I just rolled my eyes to this. I appreciate the effort put into it, but not enough to make me care

The webcomic is made by a dude named Gearboy from the 1 year dead website MemeCenter. Said creator was known for scamming admins for more money and even fake cried in one of his posts about leaving the site. Then he got exposed.

8:08 I think the video game scene is more of a "Mock-Off" joke. At first I tought that this was the ending actual of the story and thus just a Plot Twist all the time. But no they. They returned to the actual plot of the story. If the story ended with the CoD Scene than it would be good. They had to ruin it
In stories sadness without purpose means absolutely nothing. You can’t just write something sad just because you feel like it. It must have some sort of purpose within the themes and narrative. I have written many stories that I plan on publishing at some point and all of them have at least some form of dark or sad moments. A character losing a loved one, a character losing their sanity, a character who feels alone. All of these have purpose within the stories I wrote these in. I always do my best to incorporate a message or core theme within these narratives. That’s what comes first. The message. The heartbreak is only used as a tool to enhance the message.
