I love how with the Scott Pilgrim universe being based in a lot of video game logic this show feels like a secret true ending

The show would've been vastly improved if Scott said "Hey all, Scott here"

I'd honestly be down for more franchises doing the "what if this happened instead" route. It adds so many opportunities to further explore characters in the same continuity.

As a fan of the comic, movie and game I was initially disappointed in the plot twist but as it kept going, I was invested as hell and wouldn’t have finished as fast if it wasn’t for this. The show also gives Scott a new beginning to redeem himself after facing the more sinister future version and he wants to do everything in his power to not end up like him and Ramona reminding Scott to do so is beautiful cause that’s what future Scott missed entirely. This retelling is such a genius response to the original work and I absolutely loved seeing these characters I’ve loved for years now back in a new light 14:30 Also HOLLIE SPOTTED 😍

I just realized something interesting about Scott. He might not be the most unlikable example of the unlikable lead that I've seen. the protagonist of Bad Santa is a crook, a drunkard, and all around degenerate, yet he was able to make an effort to self improve. It goes to show that even the most vile human beings can do better.

Hideo Kojima did a very good job with this adaption, i hope he directs more pieces of media to satiate our endless hunger for entretainment.

This series took the Evangelion Rebuild movies route where it started off as a retelling the original story but then takes a hard left turn as the series goes on.

The anime really did try something different in an actually good way. Kinda reminded me of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining.

This series is a miracle! Getting the original cast together to prove Ramona is more than just a Princess Preach!

I genuinely can’t imagine being upset that we got something entirely new from the franchise rather than just another retread of the same story, the bait and switch really did make for a pretty great unexpected surprise, and sure while I would’ve loved adaptation more in line with the comics, i overall felt what we got was so much better than I could imagine.

I was initially skeptical when I realized they were going in a different direction but the Mathew pattel vs. Gideon fight was so good it made me just forget my skepticism lol

My honest opinion of the show: I haven’t read Scott pilgrim. I have only watched the movie. So I went into this not knowing what to expect. It was awesome and I wholeheartedly enjoyed it. I enjoyed getting to know characters I was only able to spend a few minutes of screen time with. A note I found a little weird was I was more aware of the fact that the actors for the movie weren’t really voice actors, except for Mae Whitman who voiced Katara, amity from the owl house, and tinkerbell. Admittedly it was a little jarring to hear these actors voicing the same characters because all I could imagine was Michael cera grunting in the booth when Scott was walking through the desert. It wasn’t necessarily bad, but it felt weird. Also the anime made me realise how much Chris Evan’s interpretation of Lucas Lee sounds like Lego Batman.

Thank you for actually talking about this in a positive light. While watching the anime, I was so happy it was back and it definitely reminded me as to why I enjoyed Scott in the first place. After watching it, I saw so many reviews on the anime in such a negative way and was disappointed that no one was really just happy that it was back in the first place. This made me so appreciative of things that I enjoy and enjoying them without having to always see the negatives. So thank you, D💚

At first I was pissed off at the bait and switch like with the masters of the universe, but I quickly got over it and realize it's nowhere as bad as that. It is it's own thing and nothing can take that away

Loved the anime by I still wish we could have gotten a straight adaptation of the books. There were some really amazing scenes in the books that I just wish could have been animated. My personal favorite being the one where the twins kidnapped Kim and Scott has to rescue her. So much raw emotion was there because it follows after the build up of so many threads: Kim's development that she had deeper feelings for Scott, Scott and Ramona's relationship going through the rocks, and the twins wrecking(physically and mentally) Scott with truth bombs about Ramona. The climax then wraps it with Kim lying about getting a text from Ramona saying things are going to be okay, the twins being absolutely surprised at Ramona actually changing, and then when Scott defeats them he runs back to find Ramona is gone. Just absolutely gut wrenching all around.

Legit just paused the review after hearing Scott Pilgram died just to watch the show. Even before I decided to watch, the tone felt much more calming compared to other reviews that I saw were more "Screw this for false advertisement/not following the source material," with others being "Fuck you for not liking the rug pull." Alfred Hitchcock's Bomb is much more useful than most people think.

Im a GIANT fan of all things scott pilgrem and was UBER exited for this show and was curious about how it would adapt it. The moment scott freaking died*** I was legit shocked. How ever unlike most people that were inisionally disappointed in it, I was SUPER into it because its been ages since something like this has happened with something like this and i think it ADDS to the experience. This is by far my most favorite animated thing (well at least show) of this year and i saw a show that made me respect superman (I used to hate him now i like him).

We might’ve all got jebaited, but unlike TLOU2, which did a similar idea, it works really well for SPTO since it doesn’t act as a replacement for the comics or movie. Instead, it’s a companion piece that pays homage to and deconstructs them in an engaging and thought-provoking way, along with giving the extended cast way more development than they had in the movie, or even the comics when it comes to the exes. I can 100% understand if anyone was left bitter for not being what it was advertised to be, but for me personally, I still fully enjoyed this wacky and wild ride all the way through.

I haven't played a single Metal Gear Solid game xD, but this expansion of the universe through its side characters, the development of all of them, everything that happened because of this alternate timeline... I discovered Scotr Pilgrim in 2017 and since then I loved it. This series made me feel so excited ^^

I feel like a lot of the harshest criticism of the new show comes from people who sound like they stopped watching after episode 2 at most and didn't particularly understand the parts they did watch because they had already set themselves up to dislike it. For one thing, that's the only way they could think the show is about Ramona fighting her exes instead of Scott - the only one she actually fights is Roxie, and even then, she admits defeat and apologizes.

The shows good but, it should've been more upfront it wasn't a straight up adaptation.

The beginning is the only part I watched and Said “yes that’s relatable” and proceeded to click off the video I have now came back to watch the video and decided it’s goated and very whimsical indeed

I feel like the ending is actually a lot worse. I think that the writer and brian lee o malley thought that they could settle ramona's arc by having her mirror scotts arc with the whole "I choose me". It works for scott because scott literally has to accept himself through nega scott, the embodiment of his flaws. this ending falls flat because Ramona isn't like scott. She's always chosen herself, she's the one who leaves and no matter how much the show tries to paint it as "she leaves the one she loves", the evidence points to the contrary. She just "uses" people, and simply doesn't like commitment, which is why she always dips when things start getting to close. Gideon was the exception because he was the first dude to literally go "nuh uh" and make her stay, which ramona had 0 clue how to handle. It's why she started dating scott, because she saw him the same way he saw her: a solution in the shape of (in scotts case, the manic pixie dream girl, in ramonas, the simple and naive nerdy kid) them. In fact, future ramona created an 8th ex in future scott because she repeated the same old thing with him. So super ramona banishing future scott back to the future and then future ramona saying she won't talk to him again is just, the same thing. It's just that now, she's not running away but is now pushing away. Ramona's arc should have been her going "fuck this" regarding the whole future scott and ramona thing and just yelling at the two. she should've started telling the future versions just how dumb and terrible they are, scott could even chirp in. It would make sense since the videogame concepts and stuff are scotts thing, and ramona just breaking that would be fine. Ramona should have forced her future self to confront future scott instead of banishing him, and in the process, the future versions look at their past selves and be like "damn, these mfs spitting." future versions resolve with each other, and ramona and scott reunite properly and cement their shit. It would perfectly match ramona's arc as she's now confronting her mistakes instead of pushing them away or running away again. FYI I'm literally just spitballing the ending here, so pardon the weirdness.

Recently I've become more accepting of adaptations making changes. People say it's bad if it's not 100% accurate to the source, and will use stuff like Velma or Dragon Ball Evolution as their reasoning. Yeah, an adaptation indeed needs respect for the source material and, well, good writing. But just read watch or play the source material if accuracy is that important to you. It's essentially encouraging creators to take less risk or do something new if it's just going to be like an anime which is essentially produced alongside the manga in a lot of cases. And don't get me wrong I love One Piece, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, etc. but that also means that most anime isn't even original content, just copying someone else's work. Scott Pilgrim as great as it would be to have a straightforward adaption, doesn't feel right to just doing it that way. The movie was a great story in its own right, despite having to shorten everything and the comic not even being finished. The story of Scott Pilgrim was always rooted in meta-narratives and subversions it feels right when the Netflix show flips the script and properly uses that to develop the characters further. This is something I hope adaptations could take going forward to take risks that enhance the experience with a property instead of just cynically and arbitrarily chanign things to create rage bait or to shit on the source material.
