It's not a weird reason. The engines used currently on the B52 are OLD as the hills technology so they smoke because they smoked when they were designed. Change them to newer technology engines and the no more smoke. There, I saved anyone who couldn't wait nearly 15 minutes of their life to find out why.

Exactly, they smoke because they run a very rich fuel mixture due to the old design. Back in the day, the fuel delivery systems for jet engines were less than wonderful, they just hosed the engine in fuel and hoped for the best. They didn't care about efficiency because jet fuel didn't cost what it does today. Plus they didn't want to risk a flameout so better to run rich.

Seven years working on those TF-33 engines, although not exactly hosing the fuel in the engines. There have been many technological advances in 50+ years. There have been many upgrades to the B-52 since they were built, but the engines however have remained exactly as they were built. Yes they have all been overhauled many, many, did I say MANY times. But no new technology has been added to the engines.. The Air Force has considered replacing the engines with more current models but as of this moment they as well as the rest of the military services suffer from that disease that effects a majority of people in this world called DaFundsalow…😂 It will cost major $$$$$$$ to upgrade to a more fuel efficient engine for these aging aircraft..besides the time it will take to refit every one of them. This is not your average LS swap in the family hot rod we’re talking about.

I'm a former Turbofan Test Engineer for Rolls-Royce at Stennis Space Center from 2007-2012. During my time there we tested the Trent 900, 1000, and XWB engines. A second test stand was being built when I left. That second test stand is now being used to test the F130 engines for the B-52. That was one fun job!

Back when this aircraft was first built, black smoke trailing jet engines was the norm rather than the exception. Not seeing black smoke for someone who grew up next to the LA Airport is still strange.

Exactly!! As a 23 year veteran who worked on fighters, tankers an Buffs for short period with kc135s I NEVER heard anyone call the smoke scary! Except the enemy!!

@@nicholasklangos9704 as a teen we used to go to Bangor AFB, in Maine, back in the 60's and there was a parking spot right at the end of the runway where you could park your care and be less than 200 feet below the B-52's as they landed directly over head... that was kick-ass... and the primary jets at that time were the F-104 Voodoo

After 112 years, the Colt .45 Model 1911 still has some active service in the US military despite the introduction of certain replacement models from other manufacturers. It is the single longest lasting weapon in the United States military arsenal including everything from pop guns to 16 inch battleship cannons. The Boeing B52 Stratofortress is the longest lasting aircraft in US military aviation after almost 70 years and is still in operation. Some of these planes are more than twice as old as their pilots, and are still going strong.

Interesting about the cartridge starts, not seen that before. Old design engines were smoky as they were less efficient. Don't know what the blue angels and other filler has got to do with b52 smoky engines?

The black smoke is actually just soot, from unburn fuel, the F4 Phantom is another such plane, and help ATC (and enemy !) identify them, much like the same black smoke from older diesel bus and truck. With the emphasis on efficiency the smoke been engineered out.

If you inspect, maintain, and repair/replace items in the same way as airplanes, your car will last pretty much forever... It'll be basically a new car after every major overhaul...

Theres nothing weird about it, back in the days they needed rich fuel mixture, more power plus it both cools and cleans. The cooling factor is significant, you can then push the engine above its limits, the difference is bigger than one would think. Cant compare old turbo jets to modern fan jets, old jets relied on lots of fuel to get lots of power from small engines.

Primitive fuel controls (fmr engine troop here) and combustors were more an issue since cooling is performed by compressor bleed air and other air blankets such that flame does not impinge on metal.

If you think those engines smoke, you should have seen the B-52G and older mdels with a water-injectin takeoff. You took a perfectly good running jet engine and threw 1000 gallons of demineralizd water into it with 30% going in the inlet to cool the air and make it denser so you could burn more fuel and increase the thrust. Then you put 70% in the turbine area for steam generation. That was a very smoky combineation. H models are nothing compared to that.

True to a point. My years at a SAC base featured 2 squadrons of the G model so I'm witness to these beasts taking off (I was "airway sciences" so was close to the runways often). The end result was not so much a "smoky combination" as it was a combination of smoke and steam that looked like it was far more 'smoke' than it actually was.

I was on a SAC base........loved to hear the klaxon sound, then flush the birds...one right after the other.....then the tankers...KC 135.following them.......then all quiet on the Base...great stuff............👍👍

@deepwoodguy2 I would visit March AFB, Riverside, CA around 1970. Each intersection had a rotating blue beacon hung over the mid-point. Signs advised pull over and stop when activated. During one visit the lights came on. From behind came the ubiquitous blue USAF crew cab pickup truck with lights and siren, 'flying' to the flight line. Exciting stuff!

Don’t forget the Phantoms they release to provide cover before the Buff’s take off and get a drink. Remember watching that while on base at Carswell in the ‘80’s. What a sight.

They're low-bypass turbofans and the black smoke is from them running excess fuel at high engine loads to reduce temperatures...like running a piston engine a bit rich at max power.

Call me crazy but I love smoke trails. I remember flying out of Denver’s Stapleton airport back in the early 90s and seeing how smoke trails were much more common back then.

When i was stationed at Castle, our shop was located to the west of the 31 EOR. Whenever the 135A's and G models would take-off, all converstion in the hangar ended, phones went unanswered, and ear plugs were inserted. The sun would disappear for a bit as well, at least until the black smoke dissapated.

Engine fuel controls on those old birds were analog and therefore set to be a bit fuel rich to prevent a flame out if the throttles happened to be reduced to quickly. Also the old engines had water injection just like the KC-135A tankers. Water injection gave about a 10% boost in thrust for better take off performance.

The J-79, F-104's and the B-58's used were a smoky engine. I think they corrected this, because, if the enemy wanted to find their target, just follow the path.

This is a bit painful to watch. Being a former B-52G AC the REAL black smoke was from using water injection on a J-57 engine. Both the B-52's and KC-135's using J-57"s. H models with their TF-33's didn't put out anything. The EPA would have loved them.

In the 60's it was assume to see a fully loaded B-52 take off from Guam drop down out of site then rise like a bird of prey out of the see pouring black smoke, loved watching it.

Its becuse they are still using the same old smokey engines that were fitted to Boeing 707s. Fortunately, they are fitting new turbo fan engines soon that will be more efficient and eliminate all that unburnt fuel.

Yes those JT 3 (pure jet) and JT3d (FAN JET)(improved fuel by 30%engines and also JT 8's on (DC 9/727) all can/annular combustion chambers with re-canning (modified airflow) no smoke and 1% or so improvement in fuel consumption. The new R/Royce a further 40% fuel reduction (can carry bombs or missiles farther)

11:39 Blue Angel pilots don't wear G suits because of the high precision flying they do, having a G suit in/deflate would cause them to unintentionally move the flight controls.

I believe rolls Royce is making a new generation engine for the Buff. It will increase power and range. I saw somewhere that the Buff has a water injection system that is used at take off and that is what causes the black smoke

The original J-57 engines used water injection. Later models went to a turbo fan engine, and now modern engines are being installed. Basically the same power, but more efficient and reliable.

There has long been a discussion about replacing the 8 engines with 4, but there are 2 provided with that. One is the engine pylons will need to be completely redesigned. The bigger problem is that if one engine fails, there'll be a big asymmetric thrust problem that the tail won't be easily able to correct. With 8 engines, if 1 fails that's not as big of a problem and the crew would be able to trim that out with both yaw trim and reducing thrust on that opposite side.

Used to watch these taking off from Frankfurt, they woudl be so heavily laden you could see the wings rise under lift way before rotate. the plane would almost dissappear down the runway and then you would see it reappear and climb out just over the trees at the far western end of the runway.

My first wife (rip) and I lived in Delhi, California right in the flight line of the B-52s at Castle AFB. After living there long enough it was hard to sleep without the sound of them passing over our house after we had moved to Modesto. .

One of my brother’s friends was a B-52 jockey. He served 30 years and left as a major for a job in Silicon Valley that paid 10 times more than he made flying nukes around the country. Go figure. He still cannot talk about what he did pilot wise, it’s classified.

SAC AF Base housing always had carports because the BUF's jet fuel would dissolve your car's paint. That housing also pioneered clothes dryers because you couldn't hang your clothes out to dry.

Several engines like the J79 power the F4 Phantom have smoky exhaust. The Phantom is therefore easily picked out with naked eyes.

If they are using the CRT displays they aren't obsolete. Archaic perhaps, but if it's in use and providing valuable service it's certainly not obsolete, no more than the B-52 itself. Now an analog cell phone, that's obsolete.

Newer Rolls-Royce F130 turbofans are on track to replace the old Pratt and Whitney TF33 smokey engines and the carts starts most likely be replaced with an APU for starting.

They use old turbojet motors on them using JP8 for fuel so yeah, it's going to smoke. When they complete the upgrades to the all new turbofan motors, that smoke will disappear.

I'm not a vet, but my father was in the Air Force until after I became a man. After all these decades, I miss the jets. Ever have B-52s fly over your house? Massive. How about F-15s. F-4s were cool, too. Now, it'd be F-22s I reckon/hope. F-4s? Man, I'm getting old.

The reason is simple water injection into the engines is why they smoke on takeoff and provide extra boost.

WATER INJECTION at BUSTER THROTTLE SETTINGS!!! The new engines being installed by Sprit AeroSystems here in Tulsa, OK. are super quiet and being turbo-FANS, smoke just barely with the water-injection on. Both the GE and Rolls-Royce engines sound like a pair 787s at War Emergency (BUSTER) settings-not as spooky as the B-2 at take-off, but darn close! Scary to think that no crew members of B-52's flying, are as old as the airframes! The "short-tailed" B-52H's are 1968 airframes-the Air Force intends to "phase them out" in 2050(!!!!!!!).
