Valchek lets it be known he's not thrilled by how the Frank Sobotka investigation is going. (Season 2, Episode 9 "Stray Rounds") Featuring Al Brown, Deirdre Lovejoy, Lance Reddick, John Doman and Frankie Faison
The sick part is that Frank Sobotka was 10 times the man Valchek was. Frank wasn't a criminal. Valchek abused his power and resources just to tear down a working class union. Valchek is 1000000x worse than Sobotka.
The most fucked up part was valcheks window was supposed to be a surprise. All he had to do was talk to the pastor and the whole thing would’ve been avoided
@@garccoleman386 I don't think that was actually Frank, just a note he left with the van where to send the pictures :P Judging by the fact at one point it was in Aus, no?
@@paulozhan What makes you say Nick Sobotka wasn't well played? Well, i godda agree with you he's not all the time upright but he's pretty good overall and has some great scenes. It's like Ziggy, he's inconsistant. He has genious scenes and other more weak.
JohnACorp782 but they couldn’t make legitimate money. Stringer got scammed by way bigger fishes than the drug dealers, and that showed him the legit businessmen, politicians, the crooks are way out of their game.
That's what I've come to love about this season, the whole investigation is set in motion by nothing more than the sheer pettiness of McNulty and Valchek. It's so scummy it's perfect.
The complications had to do with the undercover officer as I remember. He was outnumbered two to one. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wxppLLCADRM.html
I just noticed that at :58, he goes, "... if you check the 24s..." and looks at Valchek. It's the police equivalent of a passive aggressive "as per my previous email" and I LOVE IT.
+wee~leon Seriously. I watched with a family member who HATES anything union, I mean you say Union in this house with him and he's ready to loose it so the first few episodes he didn't like Sobotka but looking back he agreed that Frank Sobotka was just a guy trying to care for everyone around him and survive but above all care for everyone around him, not just family and friends but guys at the port that he barely knew...if that's not brotherhood I don't know what is, and while I'm not fan of union's they have a lot of good history and still have some good roles in this day.
I hated Valchek as much as the next guy, but he's a funny fucker though. I always thought his constant nagging and complaing about Frank Sabotka was quite humorous at times, and I love it when he really puts it to Burrell as well(since I hate Burrell too). Guy doesn't care that Burrell is his superior, his does and says what he wants to him.
+MrRiddleAW Might be humorous at times, only because its a movie though. But since the show is reality based its more sad than anything, because stuff like this happens in the real world. A guy with power brings another guy down, who might not have done anything wrong, but simply because he doesnt like him. Btw. I dont think the creators goal was to make people laugh about Valcheks hatred towards Frank
+Salam A. Yeah I know, but I was just saying that he had some funny moments though, albeit unintentional maybe. It's the same with Rawls. He's an absolute dickhead and i'm sure there are plenty of people like him, but he had his moments when he made me laugh.
+MrRiddleAW The whole scene with Rawls complaining about how Bunk and Freamon not being able to hold the Atlantic Light always makes me laugh. " I don't care if they were speaking Mandarin Chinese with cockssuckers lisp, they needed to see the inside of an Interrogation cell." " What I see gentleman is two of my detectives fucking the dog" Those two lines always make me laugh.
Rawls>Burrell>Valchek. Rawls doesn't (to my knowledge) actively sabotage cases for personal benefit, he just rushes them more than he should for the sake of a good clearance rate. Burrell, while he may be a piece of shit, knows a good headline when he sees one. Valchek just cares about his own bruised ego.
It’s indicated many times that Rawls is actually a competent police officer and could be as good a detective as McNulty, Freamon or Bunk. It’s just his desire to be the boss that takes the first priority.
Rest In Peace Al Brown (Stan Valchek). All he wanted was to hear about Frank Sobotka. Unfortunately he had to deal with ratf#ckers. Poor guy. He didn't even get his van back.
I love how Valcheck and the Burrel are uncomfortable with the fact they hit a Brothel implying they may have visited one, but Rawls does not care given that he is gay.
Rawl for a moment looked like he would have been a good commissioner. He had a subtle respect for Daniels. He generally played the bad guy, but under Carcetti he actually had a pretty decent report with Daniels. There were basically 4 future commissioners in this room in this scene.
Rawls kinda reminds me of Howard Hamlin from Better Call Saul. He had superiors, he had inferiors, and he knew how to move between them. The same way Howard liked Jimmy and his work ethic, but had to deny him a job because of Chuck, the M of HMM. Obviously juking the stats is wrong, but that's part of what's expected of Rawls by Burrell, of Burrell by the Mayor, and of the Mayor by Clay Davis. If Rawls wants to keep his position, let alone advance, he has to toe the line. How can you make good change when you're stuck in the mud? Rawls would have to advance first...and as we saw when he tried that, he wasn't as quick or cutthroat as Burrell and was quickly 'put in his place'. Good poleece, bad politician.
It's interesting to see how the bosses react here. Rawls asks questions about police work and a case that affects CID. He's a bastard but he certainly knows about police work. Burell's just laughing at the potential dirt involving politicians in the city, Daniels is just 100% right about him, furthermore it's not surprising that Prop Joe said he was in the glee club in high school. And Valcheck, well, he's acting like a complete selfish asshole. He's easily the worst of them all.
+doomsncrew I really started to respect Rawls when he was at the scene of the Kima shooting in season one. Sure, he's a complete asshole, but he knows how to do police work.
I dunno, Valchek's motivations are clear & genuine -- selfish, but clear & genuine. Is that worse than Burrell's constant scheming wheeling and dealing bullshit? I guess it depends who you ask.
@@Tweakerbythespeaker Agree with you. I don't think you can stand Valchek and Burrell side by side and have Valchek being the worse of the two. He was pettier, yes, but that kept his reach relatively small. They're all selfish.
sign of a great show is when people talk of the characters like real people, not about the performacnes (because its real) . not about the actor, or the writing- but talk about the guy, stan valchel- like that guys is a douchebag- what a petulant child he is- . thats the sign of a show that crosses entertainment into reality. (applause)
Chad Chadwick It’s because Frank Sabaka was the only guy who wouldn’t kiss his ass and let him be the bully that he is. Frank would cut him down to size and humiliate him, so he had to be dealt with to protect his ego and image
Typical police boss past his prime and should of retired years ago but stays on and they don't know what to do with because he has influential friends.
2:04 I love how you can see Burrell close his eyes like, "Goddamnit." He thought he had an easy victory here. Stan's unit overperformed and were going to get him a big headline and even get Rawls his murders. Even with the potentially incriminating brothel hiccup, it seems like this is smooth sailing... right up until Valchek says the words, "Frank Sobotka."
It’s insane that each one of them, except Daniels and the DA, care about something different. Valchek wants Sebodka, Rawls wants stats to juke, and Daniels just wants to clean up the city.
The problem with Valchek as a police commander is that he's not in it for enforcing the law, but feeding his own ego and exerting power. The fact that he went to the feds to get to Sobotka and completely fucked over the case illustrates that well enough.
The worst character was clearly Marlo. He wasn't a drug dealer, he was a psychopath who used the drug game to kill indiscriminately because he got off on it.
@@patgogan7324 They both wanted to put up a Stain Glass window in their church. But Franks window was put in First & It was Better. Valcheck asks Frank to remove it And Frank tells him to F Off. Valcheck then becomes Obsessed with taking down Frank.
i felt narese campbell and office walker were the most hateable characters on the show. literally made my blood boil, along with the junkie who kept robbing bubbles
"Sir, we caught a large cocaine shipment, handguns, Ak-47s, a submarine, 5 murderers, 4 terrorists, 3 spies, and Pablo Escobar's lieutenant", Valchek: "What about Sobotka?
Ervin Burrell was the most qualified to be appointed Commissioner (he was only interim Commissioner in the vid) after Frazier (the actor playing Frazier, Dick Stilwell, died during Season 1) retired. However, the 1st district (which was part of counsel that confers with Mayor Royce over the appointment of the next commissioner) didn't like Burrell. Valchek had suction with the 1st district and could influence them to vouch for Burrell. So despite Burrell outranking Valchek, he needed the latter
Throughout the show you see how powerful Valchek is but you never see him sitting next to Rawls and Burrell in season three during the briefing room scenes.
What's crazy is that they're telling Valchek that he's inadvertently about to bring in a huge case without having to do any actual work himself and all he can think about is a petty beef. I mean, it's clear that, Frank is in enough that he'd likely feel something behind this but Valchek's just a child.
