Welcome to Season 4 of FTB Film Study! In this video, Coach Codutti outlines the principles and general philosophy that made Kotelnicki one of the most-feared playcallers in college football and a "must get" for Penn State head coach James Franklin.

These imaginative, concepts, schemes, and play calls putting your players in winnable situations more often and using leverage against the defense has been missing at PSU for some years. Looking forward to Kotelnicki’s offensive mind at work.

LOVE the comment from the TTU coach--thanks for sharing. Lots to be excited about here, but the biggest for me is play action. If I had a dollar for every time I said "man right now is a great time for play action," only for Yurcich to slam the RB up the middle for 1 yard, I'd be rich. I especially love PA off of wide zone because of the pressure it puts on the safeties. I can't imagine trying to figure out whether or not to follow the "flow" of the play against this offense. Also, I LOVE the diamond set, particularly with our talent TE. Very glad to hear that isn't going away.

He ran PA passes out of pistol and even under center early in the season, which allowed Allar to get deeper drops, only to promptly forget about those plays when the conference games starte

Good breakdown here as usual. For me, this guy draws NFL comparisons to Kyle Shannahan's offense... inside /outside zone run reads with play action and a lot of motion but with a college flavor. Puts defenses in a lot of conflict. This works for Brock Purdy (non mobile QB) should be good for Allar. Thoughts?
@johnlee7085
@johnlee7085 5 месяцев назад
Coach K has done it with all sorts of personnel. Mobile QBs, NFL QBs, 3rd string QB, no QB, … And I’m guessing everyone of your WRs was more highly rated than KUs. Really though, all the analysis is secondary to the opening comment from the TTU D coach. He’s glad he doesn’t have to defend against Coach Ks O.

This new OC reminds me of Yurcich watching this video. I know he's the new big thing, but Yurcich did a lot window dressing and goofy formations getting too cute. The #1 thing I want to see is a downfield passing attack. We didn't get this big arm 5 star Drew Allar to dink and dunk 90% of the game.
@teekay_1
@teekay_1 5 месяцев назад
You'd have to watch an entire game to have an opinion on how he can react to defensive pressure and in-game adjustments. A scheme is just that. It's about game planning, execution and how you react when it's not working, or your starting left OT is out with an injury. Every scheme will work if you have the talent and solid execution.
@dmayfield125
@dmayfield125 5 месяцев назад
Yurcich was a "window dresser" that had "goofy formations," but had no real plan. AK does window dressing and goofy formations and actual includes these as a staple in the offense. There is execution behind it and there is a purpose. Something that was missing with MY. The only "goofy" formation that was a staple and worked was the old school Wing-T run.
@PSU2024
@PSU2024 5 месяцев назад
@@dmayfield125 I loved the wing T and wasn't referring to that. Too much 12 personnel for me. Yurcich was the anti-spread.
@venisontron
@venisontron 5 месяцев назад
@@PSU2024 You want 12 personnel when your RBs and TEs are your best threats. You just need to use them in creative ways. Good play callers know how to use their best guys to get the max advantage out of them. Moorhead knew how. Yurcich was too married to winning every down by calling "the right play" based on what the defense was showing that he forgot about matchups. The left side of the line would cave the defense on a running play, and he would never go back to it.
@venisontron
@venisontron 5 месяцев назад
@@dmayfield125 The thing about the T formation is that it's not goofy. There are hundreds of books about it. But for Yurcich, he only saw it as a gimmick. Did they ever learn more than the sneak and the sweep play? Did they ever run a true PA pass out of it, or a belly, or a trap, or a counter? They could have actually done some work with that formation if he had actually used the next set of plays after the ones you learn in peewee football. Particularly on a team with two RBs and two TEs who could start at almost any other school

Power football will always work. The new age deviations make the game to convoluted. Been going back and watching games from the 73, 86 and 93 teams. Back then the offense went north and south. Trying to run side to side hoping for gaps is for undersized teams. Franklin hasn’t realized in 10 years that he isn’t at vandy anymore.

Let's see how power football works for Michigan against Alabama. Their offense has gotten painful to watch - and they're finally going up against a team that will smash them in the mouth right back with superior talent.

Do you remember the kid from Buffalo who ran for 300 yards in one game, then ran for 400 and 8TDs in the next game? Kotelnicki was calling those plays. If it works, he'll just keep doing it

This mentality is why some folks in the PSU fanbase want a civil war over CJF right now. Whine and complain cuz it doesn't look like JoePa and Ganter's stuff. Those offenses were great for their time, and maybe those playbooks will come back around, but not yet. Time to get onboard. Football is different now, and complaining about every damned thing doesn't help anything.
@xolonniexo180
@xolonniexo180 5 месяцев назад
@@robsherrill8130 first off, Michigan can throw the football with an excellent QB at the helm IF THEY NEED TO. Secondly, at least they get to play the Alabamas of the world BECAUSE THEY WON THE B1G!! The biggest problem Penn State has is the fact that Franklin is NOT a gameday coach. Hopefully, as many have said, he stays out of the offense. Whether you run 21 personnel or 12, I have thought it makes zero sense to hand a ball off to a standing still rb 5-6 yards deep to gain 1 yard. Wisky is changing their offense from power, but the jury is still out. They did not win the west, an inept Iowa did with zero offense.

The things Joe Pa and Fran Ganter did in their day, was awesome 👌 but sadly times have changed big time, and you have to adapt with the present, literally!!!! I truly hope 🙏 Andy is the man for the job and turn this offense into a serious potent scoring machine!!!! WE have to give the man a chance at least!!!! I hope he is a Joe Moorehead type dude!!!@ Thanks 👍

If Warren, Johnson, Meiga and/or Lambert-Smith go NFL, Coach K isn't going to have a lot to work with intermediate. Especially if defenses know Allar isn't going to run of read option. As @cjboyer4355 pointed out, for a pocket QB we may see play calling closer to what freshman Ballard ran filling in for Bean. That could involve slow developing plays to the flat/ wide zone that gets us behind the sticks which won't help the third conversions.
@cjboyer4355
@cjboyer4355 5 месяцев назад
Wasn’t expecting a shout out in this video lol if Allar is the talent he’s hyped to be Andy will work the offense to make him as successful as possible. I wouldn’t worry so much about the play making positions but rather how good is your I-line? The better the line the better the play calls.
@johnlee7085

I wouldn’t draw many conclusions from a 3rd string former walkon QB running the O. It’s totally different when Coach K has a chance to prepare the players.

Problem: we loved Yurcich before he started at Penn State too. These plays take time to run, that’s the problem. There isn’t this kinda time in the B1G. How bout power run game James? Plain ol Michigan, Wisky, run the ball with great blocking. This guy will be another Franklin scapegoat in 3-4 years. Franklin just won’t learn.
