KNOCK KNOCK:
Bill is moving in with some friends and they’ve found the perfect house - so what if it’s strangely cheap to rent, and the landlord (David Suchet) is a little creepy?
The wind blows, the floorboards creak, and the Doctor thinks something is very wrong. What lurks in the strange tower at the heart of the building - and why can’t they find any way to enter it?

David Suchet's acting really made this episode. A little boy who never really grew up, simply growing old, and just as trapped as his poor mother.

I quite agree, it's so important because it shows that he never changed from the little boy refusing to let his mother go. Like Eliza, really. Both are stuck as who they are, and that is their tragedy, in the end.

Ummm...Bill and her friends try room-sharing, their landlord offers them a real gift horse of a house. The lice kinda feed on the tenants, and we've discovered here that the landlord uses that to keep his mother alive. He convinced everyone, however, that Eliza was his daughter - that's what this clip is on about. Yeah I dunno.

David Suchet's brilliant and heartfelt performance reminds us how specifically insane villains, as inexcusably heinous as their crimes can still be, may easily earn sympathy. I think that keeps such fictional villains on the map and certainly for sci-fi like Doctor Who.

Many people thought this was where the episode floundered. This to me improved it exponentially. It turned it from a really good if standard Doctor Who haunted house episode to a bleak and tragic drama piece. And my GOD David Suchet was fantastic in this moment, reduced to the mentality of a crying child. Christ what a gut punch.

Only time i saw parents do it is to be abusive and controlling really. Only because the sentence works in fiction doesn't mean it should be applied irl.
@pmsavenger
@pmsavenger 3 года назад
@@skeletoninyourbody9896 Fully agree with that one. Any parent that need to excerpt control like that seem to often do it as an excuse for abuse. Not always, of course, and not in all contexts, but an unquestioned power structure that takes away agency from a child is not great. A parent need to teach, and guide, and absolutely set healthy boundaries, but also empower and foster independence, not just say they are in charge and leave it at that. In fact, children tend to be more likely to act out if you restrict them too harshly.
@azothothdestroyerofworlds1910
@azothothdestroyerofworlds1910 3 года назад
@@pmsavengerThank you for taking the time to expand on this. It provides clarification for those viewing it that may have faced mistreatment to not simply double-down on past resentments, but simply take on a different approach moving forward if they are considering parenthood or are in a position that grants them authority over others. Mutual understanding of one's own place in the world and the boundaries we establish, coupled with an effective approach, would in my mind at least make for better guides and leaders that this world truly needs as opposed to the network of perfidious individuals that always seems to ascertain power for their mutual interest. There are too many 'truth' keepers that act under the pretence of morality and justice that simply are trying to advance themselves/their group over another whilst playing the victim when justifying opportunism/violence against their competitors. Identifying patterns of behaviour really should be taught at an elementary level so any individual can safeguard themselves from parasitic individuals that feed of the fear and morality plea bargaining they offer their victims as an ultimatum, as though they themselves are judge jury and executioner. There is often no reasoning with beings that will use even your apology if you've been gaslighted enough as a means to simply justify smiting you after you are made to appear guilty of socially perceived slights they have concocted in the minds of others. That is essentially the basis for a lot of past witch trials and even modern forms of social castigation that are designed to ruin the lives of rivalling individuals that are deemed a nuisance to compete with on a level playing field, so often have to stack the deck in their favour with more perfidious means. Anyone who has ever engaged in the outlined manner of behaviour when dealing with their opposition should know that this form of social engagement is unsustainable as if it were applied by everyone uniformly they too would likely be increasingly on the receiving end of it the more this social behaviour is encouraged/propagated. In such case they should truthfully do all to uphold the rights and freedoms of even their competitor and play the game on even terms if they are to be granted an honourable victory if their values and sense of morality are greater. Even if an individual is correct in their assertions this still wouldn't grant someone the authority to deem themselves a superior and thus empowered to assert authority of the inherent worth of the individual based on this as that is a self-assumed role people try to claim to dominate the wills of others with their own. Primal animals act with indifference when asserting themselves over others, so the truly moral individual deserving of authority doesn't seek power to assert oneself over others, they assume authority for the wellbeing of others and not to bring about the complete ruin of others, even their rivals. The world unfortunately plays by the more primitive hierarchical approach that doesn't account for the good of the whole, but the part in which they pertain to and its expansion/domination over other individuals/groups.

I really enjoy this episode, a crazy landlord who has been killing young people is really a small boy stuck in a old man’s body as he can’t let go of his mother. It’s really sad that the mother forgets who she was until the doctor realizes the truth and told her. She accepted it and decided to I’ll herself to end the Cycle but since her son refuses to let her go, she took him with her :(. Maybe in death they’ll truly be together

Its been said so many times in the comments section but good lord is David Suchet Fantastic! Its all in his whimpering looks and vocal inflections that really bring out the little boy wanting to save his mother. Even if he's willing to deny the consequences of what he's done in order to do so by killing the tenants (and not of the David variety). The episode itself might have been middling, but this scene was definitely a positive highlight.

That question that he asked the doctor it's never easy to answer. I lost my mother at the age of 10 and that's a whole that can never be filled. Memories that can never be made. And now my grandmother is in the grips of Alzheimer's disease. It is a difficult fact to accept that everything has its time. Nothing lasts forever. It's a fact that inspires tears every time and maybe that's a good thing. The day that it doesn't is the day I have to worry. But I could never commit the atrocities that this man has done because it would then become what I want and not what my mother would want. And that is where his logic fails. His logic is that of a little boy who never grew up. The appearance of an old man is just a façade disguising the reality, just as there is a woman under that wood. Such an ethical debate in the scene for the fact that there is no easy answer.

Eliza didn't have time to spend the life force she got from them and permanently erase them, so as she died she gave back the energy she got from them to restore them. The other victims were long long gone.

David Suchet in this role looks a lot like Peter Sallis’s Clegg from “Last of the Summer Wine”… don’t you think so? Without the famous Poirot moustache, it seems he’s an entirely different persona all together…

Mike Paz Can someone explain whats happening, I'm not a fan of doctor who, I've never seen an episode either. But I am a fan of Greek mythology and this women looks like a victim of Medusa, or a wood nymph. I'm not able to find anything on the internet either. Who is this lady??~

FlowerPower123 That old man crying is the wooden lady's son.When he was young,his mother was dying,her 12 year old found some bugs he liked and brought them to her bed,the bugs where magical,and saved her,by turning her into wood.Her son had to feed the bugs to keep his mother alive,feeding them..humans...As the mother got older,she forgot about almost everything..and she was convinced that her son is actually her father..and this happened after Doctor Who came Hope you understand something 😂

Thankyou. Nice narrative, i hope they upload more information on the wikia's. Those seem damn evil, what i dont understand is ... the bugs seem really powerful cant they just kill people on their own.. but oh well they need to make a story i guess.

@@starsfalldown1234567late but, the bugs can kill people, but bugs aren't that adept at luring people on their own. John was luring people to the house with the bait of cheap housing. The bugs learned that obeying him and letting him live meant they'd be consistently fed and allowed to spread.

My mother had scleraderma. A condition that crystalizes tissue. Had it not effected her organs as well her skin would have continued to calcify until she would have been like this. Her lungs solidified and she died a horrible death. That haunts me every day and will until I die. I realize however that death was a blessing and the longer she lived the more suffering she would have endured. I would never have been selfish enough to keep her with me under those circumstances. My mother was one of the finest persons I’ve ever met. To know her was to love her. She didn’t deserve that. This broke my faith and yet that faith in god and afterlife would otherwise been my only comfort. If this is how god treats his most fervent followers then I truly pray such a monster doesn’t exist.
