I’ve seen Obramovich’s boat first when sailing on Sydney Harbour. Then when I returned to Perth around the start of Covid, our family seafood company got the contract to fill his boat with pallets of the most expensive seafood and also because Western Australia had no Covid we filled the Queen Mary 2nd as well. We would have gone under if not for those two so we are very grateful to them as we had to rely on home deliveries for months during restaurants, hotels, Casino’s and other shutdowns

Well, doesn't that depend on the character and personality of the owner? I can imagine you would throw an arrogant rich kid like a vicious slavemaster of a son of an Arab ruler overboard but some of these owners are OK people. Apart from that, these owners tend to have knowledge, relationships and means that would increase your chances to survive an apocalypse considerably. A rich kid does not have that, which is why he is so insecure (like Donald Trump).

What’s the expression about “a camel and the eye of a needle”? I can’t begin to understand the insecurities required to create such temples of vanity and waste.
Waste because of unaffordability? For you, another would consider spending 70,000 USD to buy a car "a waste", when instead you could, according to that person, get near-similar amenities on a 30K car. Then someone else would criticize that individual for not instead buying a used car under 15K. "How wasteful of him (her)". Still another, who can only afford movie tickets once a year, would see it as a waste, when instead you could have taken the bus. Waste vs affordability... is this why it then becomes a product of vanity? Should we then begin discussing the types of homes, the choice of food, the choice of holiday destinations? If they can afford it, why not? They worked for it. Let us not be covetous for what we cannot afford. They became successful. Instead, let us be glad for their success. What?? Why not? Because you do not get to share in it? I have no disdain for their wealth. It is theirs to enjoy. As the Bible says, the farmer should be the first to enjoy the produce of his labour.

No more, possibly less dangerous than a conventional fossil fuel boat. A rupture or even a burning one would burn quickly and rise extremely fast, unlike a regular gas fire that just sits under you and burns slow. It also requires energy to keep it contained so if that fails it just loses fuel.

Some people have so much money that they don't know what to do with them. Other people have so little money that they can hardly feed themself. The money spent on one of these yachts could save tens of thousands from starvation. But it takes moral and empathy, something most of these owners lack.
@@zachniedfeldt, You don't understand the problem that just a fraction of the people owes a huge part of all the money on earth, and this is increasing year by year. Much of their wealth comes from corruption, the mafia, drugs, trafficking, and other crimes. In the US, CEOs get more than 1000 times what workers do, while more than 40 million live in poverty. Many of them are poorer than the poor in India. No, they don't owe me anything. They owe other people and government a lot. Is it fair that Donald Trump one year paid $750 in tax?

I wonder how many of those commenting about how the wealth of others would be better spent on the less fortunate (such as themselves) would be as virtuous as they claim to be if they actually had the same amount of money. Money has a powerful ability to change people. Just sayin'...
Lol. Of course they do but usually anonymously and to non profit and organizations as It's good for business. It's a tax write off, legal vehicle of bribery, pay off, untaxed way of exchange and a wonderful cleaner, transport and deliver some worldwide. Looking or ignoring things while you feed millions... You think all the 14 dollar a month bleeding hearts fund worldwide organizations that need millions to operate.
The Universe does balance and some time they will be held accountable for their use of such wealth. Death is the great equalizer and all are the same regardless of how big and extravagant their Yachts were.
Most would fall into greed. That's human nature. And this is exactly why you can't rely on the benevolence of the wealthy to "trickle down" ever. This is why an oligarchy wouldn't work (which is where the US is headed). You NEED another balancing element in a central government to tax their wealth gradually as it rises. The problem now is that the wealthy also have control over the government via corruption, lobbying, and propaganda. So we aren't seeing taxes on the wealthy increase, if anything, they have decreased in the past 10 years! We need to continue to fight to take money out of politics. That is the FIRST step. Get rid of citizen's united. If we can't do that, we become an oligarchy. The wealthy will have 100's of yachts like the above and the poor will die. It CAN get worse and it will at this rate.
Exactly! It seems so hard for people to understand if some of this shit isnt redistributed into society then the whole planet will suffer. We must maintain a sensical balance. It doesnt make any sense for people anywhere in the world to be living like then. When masses all over the world are suffering from little to no resources...

Well most of the people on this list got their money in dodgy ways. Russian Oligarchs did not come by their wealth in an honest manor. The only reason the sheiks have money is because the americans decided to make deals with them for oil they didn't know they had back in the day not to mention other shady business dealings. Gates earned his by making microsoft yet his early days in business he was ruthless and arguably him and steve jobs both stole other companies tech. His philanthropic ways were mainly because of his ex-wife and it was a popular thing to do for tax write offs. Hell Elon and Bezos are making their money in dodgy ways as only silicon valley knows.

The flipside of wealth inequality, is effort inequality. You can complain about the wealth of others or you can go out in the world and create something worth while.
@@remyr5749 It seems like there may be unspoken assumptions in your post: That ANYONE can become Bill Gates if they work hard enough. That the wealth is infinite and therefore enough for everyone to be Bill Gates. That wealth comes from hard work no matter who you are. None of these assumptions are true. If these assumptions were all true then anyone could become Joe Louis or Muhammad Ali with enough work, but no one believes that because we all understand that some people have gifts that very few others do. Another aspect of this discussion should be the distance between the mega-rich and the rest of us. I read about an interesting way to visualize wealth in feet (distance) since most people cannot really conceive of what billions and trillions actually mean because is too far out of our experience. Let's start with an iconic amount, $1 million, in $100 bills it would make a stack about 12 inches tall (1 foot). Looking at the whole population of the world we can easily realize that only a very small percentage of us will ever have that much money. It takes a 1000 millions to make a billion, so our stack of $100 bills has now gone from 1 foot to 1000 feet tall. For every other billion we have to add another 1000 feet to our pile. Trump isn't particularly wealthy compared to the mega-rich, but by his claims he has a pile of money about 1 mile high (5,280 feet). By comparison Elon Musk has $222 billion, so his pile is 222,000 feet tall (more than 42 miles high). Does ANYONE deserve that much more than everyone else? Can you say with a straight face that all your efforts in life amount to less than 12 inches (assuming that you are not a millionaire) while Musk's efforts are more than 42 miles? I don't believe it. If we make a graph of wealth starting at zero and going to $1 million on a single sheet of standard sized paper (8 by 12 inches) about 70% of the human race would be invisible, their wealth so small that it would not rise above the black line that frames the bottom of the graph. If we compare my wealth to all the rest of humanity I am upper middle class, my wealth on our graph would be between 5/8 and 3/4 of an inch. This level of inequality is not only insane but it's also unethical, those rich people did not get their money solely by hoisting themselves up by their bootstraps. Most of them inherited vast fortunes and those fortunes are maintained by buying political power to tilt the playing field in their favor, by lying, cheating, stealing, luck, and sempiternal greed (sempiternal means having a beginning but no end) that drives them to acquire at the expense of everyone else. Trump actually got nearly half of billion from his father but he still tried to stiff his siblings out of their inheritance and would have if they had not gone to court and stopped him. Nice guy, and he's not a patch on the really rich people. Yes, you can argue that people like Bill Gates give away a lot of money but my position is that it's not enough until everyone is fed, housed, and has medical care at a minimum. It is not possible to be an ethical person and have great personal wealth in the world today, there are too many who have nothing. Another point is that humanity would not have to rape and pillage the Earth nearly so hard and continuously if the enormous wealth we have already taken was shared equally.
These ships are obscene and abominations to ordinary people. It shows what happens with when too much money overrides good taste. I would be putting that wealth to help others in need vs a thing like that.
Exactly, it's a monument to the worst parts of humanity. Thousands of children dying homeless each year, suffering in poor conditions. Sometimes in the backyard of these billionaires. Sometimes even the WORKERS of these billionaires. They didn't get to the top by having empathy, they are literally the worst our species has to offer.
Gives you a thought that most of the ships have had multiple owners!! It does NOT say much for the ships at all! And any of those ships that does NOT do more than 18 knots per hour for the duration of its fuel is NOT worth a NICKEL! (these days 20 knots is already low speed). Exceptions would be sailing ships and they do better than 15 knots when you get to that size!
Many Yachts do 30 plus knots. But those are planning yachts. A full displacement design is only going to go a couple of knots faster than the square root of its length no matter how much power you have. What these can do is travel intercontenental distance's...planning yachts cannot because they can't carry enough fuel.
@@fredjones7705 is those ships cannot do high seas traveling (or are just for coastal and waterways) you have bought the equivalent of a Very Expensive Polished Turd. But lets face it money does not give you common sense in fact it might actually obstruck whatever you were born with!
Slow, ugly, a strip mall that floats, you need a private air force for security, (these are negative characteristics). Gates boats looks good but then he goes and puts unfinished technology engines that drive it a a whopping 17 knots and far more nuts. What a waste of money.
