Ok, last comment on this video. I've been on a fun anamorphic journey, probably not too dissimiliar to alot of people. Helios anamorfakes, then graduating to SLR magic/s adapters, renting SLR magic's 2.0 stuff. Then Sirui! But really being underwhelmed with them. The flaring can be out of control on them when on set. I stopped using my Sirui set pretty quick. I bought a Cinelux 2x and have adapted it using a Rapido FMJ with a FVD and helios taking lens. It looks great. Unwieldy too, need to flock the Cinelux. So not really usable much yet. I'm super excited for these as I can fly em on my BMPCC4Ks and on gimbals. I loved what I saw at Koerner. Laowa's been killing it and their build quality on the cine stuff is awesome. Can't wait to get mine.
Hi There, I am an optic professional, although I never did anamorphic lens before, but in my opinion, Lawa's lenses have many shortcomings: firstly, the resolution around the lens is very lax, and the quality is too poor. and the pincushion distortion is too obvious to use. Secondely, the magnification does not match. The 16:9 chip of the camera wastes too much pixels. 1.33 is just used. No need to crop, it is 2.4:1 Thirdly, Pl version users can say that the weight is too light, it is difficult to use, and there is no feel Last but not the least, the magnification is too low, no difference from 1.33, at least 1.8x
@@joechow1160 I saw these in person and really liked them. Usable anamorphic at a great price. You won’t find perfect at this price but these seem great. I’ll know more when I really put them through the paces.
15 years ago I dreamed of the day that interest in anamorphic lenses would drive the market to produce something mortals could buy. That day has arrived. I'm not a huge fan of 1.5 squeeze factor but we're getting places. I've been holding off on the Vazen 40mm. But I might just get it. The Great Joy's variable squeeze factor is a show-stopper for me.
The exaggerated flares are a deal-breaker for me. I’d prefer a subtle flare that draws colour from the light source rather than have the lens SCREAM at the audience “LOOK! THIS WAS FILMED WITH ANAMORPHIC LENSES!!” If there was an option for non-tinted, non exaggerated flares in EF Mount I’d buy the set in a heartbeat for my BM 6KP.
Almost jumped to cart ! These are really great, but it just made me want to use my own DIYs wich still have a lot more character in spite of their "unease" of use.
I don't personaly like the image that this lenses produce but is a welcome product for specific senarios, combining compact size and lightweight that you can only dream with "traditional" anamorphic lenses.
this is lit, I'd say: "Filmmakers could fine tune the back focus quickly by a 0.9mm hex key (included in the package), which ensures the scale is still accurate and aligned after changing cameras."
Now ,that we have the new Sirui ,Great Joy and Laowa Nanomorphs ,can u do a video comparing them ,their flows ,the plus and minus …etc. The good and the bad ,about those lenses…. Thank you
It's a worthy idea, but you can also make your own opinion by watching the reviews and noting the points you like and dislike. Whatever I point out will relate to my experience and bias in production, so I might find something a pro that's actually a down point to you. ;)
@@AnamorphicOnABudget Don’t be shy ,is cool when u make those videos :-).Sometimes I am getting lost in details but u help pointing out certain things that helps me decide what it might be a right choice to make ….so ,I am waiting for a new video from you :-)
Great, indepth video as always! I had a lot of the same thoughts as your breakdown while filming a test with the lens. There are certain elements that are not really my personal taste when it comes to anamorphics but it's got a lot of potential!
Happy to see you agree with my findings! Your test short is SUPER cool. For the people who are reading the comments, go watch it here, it's only a minute! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iM1lqqzBXdQ.html
I’ll be honest, I was considering these until your Anamorfake series recently showed off far more usable mods and post-production steps for spherical lenses. I think those videos have convinced me that I’d rather be unencumbered and so far every Anamorphic has compromises that would make me less likely to shoot with them - and that’s the last thing I want. That said, I think these lenses are exciting because in the next few years, these show usability and affordability are definitely going to keep impacting the anamorphic market.
This is the first open praise for the anamorfake series and I'm really happy to hear it! I was concerned people didn't care enough about it in spite of *REAL* anamorphics.
@@AnamorphicOnABudget I’m going to watch more, love the vids! I think Anamorphic fans would be surprised at how easily fooled we can all be regarding the flare, distortion in post, ovals and more! Your site’s blind test and your video examples were great for opening my eyes to it very recently. Might be fun to post more blind tests or collabs with other RU-vidr’s who are “cinematic” fans that highlight how even even anamorphic enthusiasts can’t always tell (you’ve mentioned great examples sometimes, like how John Wick “classic anamorphic flare” is actually not from the lens). Like the recent videos about how people complaining about the Sony A7S III could not reliably spot its 12MP resolution in blind tests against high res - videos like that can be a fun way to show people that the compromises they see on paper don’t always match perception in a final output. Great work, love your channel and that you show love for all anamorphic knowledge - including when the look can be appropriate without the gear itself.
So incredibly excited for these, it’s like they were tailor-made for me. I just bought an old RED Scarlet, only to find it doesn’t have any usable anamorphic modes -price of assumptions, I guess. :/ - so these are practically a godsend. What a time to be into anamorphics. 🙂
I am a gh6 & vazen 28 user. looks like if the 1.5x nanomorphs combine with the recent Sirui 1.25x adapter can achieve 1.8x squeeze on M43 cameras! Now the nanomorphs becomes very tempting to me. I can sell the vazen 28. 🥰🥰🥰
I have been waiting for this ever since they first teased them. And They also teased a 6mm zero D lens at the same event. I got that 6mm lens just recently (local camera store had it for a month and didn't tell me). But I also tried to get the Anamorphic lenses today and even got into the checkout for the 1$ bid.... But my payment method wasn't allowed so I missed to get it cheaply. The samples don't really work for my idea of what anamorphic characteristics I want (like I want barrel distortion and vignetting). And it's not amplified enough with just 1.5x So I very likely won't end up getting them for 1k a piece. Maybe if I get a chance to test them, because my usecase would be stills.
Honestly, I prefer the protruding rear element over having a single fixed mirrorless mount. Most people already have an EF/PL adapter for the their preferred mount.
This is just a perfect perfect choice for my new bought GH6. Soooo excited about it! Only downside is that I wished that there could be a wider focal length because the 27mm could be a little bit too long for M4/3.
I ordered the 35mm for a GH5, but now I am wondering if I should've ordered the 27mm instead :( I can only afford one lens, so I thought it made sense to order the middle one.
Hahaha, I wasn't expecting it either! But I messed up the mic placement and it started to rain as I finished filming. So it could only get worse! The next ones will be better, plus, lesson learned.
I've been hoping for an anamorphic lens that is reasonably priced and looks like it's actually anamorphic. Unfortunately... I've seen too many of these videos and Nanomorphs aren't it for me. I've checked the other brands too... still aren't it, especially for S35/FF lenses. It's limited. The ONLY company that looks like true anamorphic are the Atlas Mercury line. It's SHOCKING how good they are, just like Orions but 70% of the price. Still probably too much for some people but it's worth it. It's not like the usual $10-$25K a lens. I kept hoping one of these budget lenses would get closer though, I just don't see it.
6:35 - I personally really like this look, it reminds me of the detuned lenses on The Batman and the unique edge distortion and unsharpness they had. I would buy these lenses just to use them for that look on full frame, it looks that cool to me!
Hey Tito thanks for the great video! I think you’ve got an issue with the voice over quality tho - sounds like just that file because all the other add and music sound clear!
Very interesting lenses. I wonder if Laowa will continue exporing anamorphics and eventually release a FF35 anamorphic set. Agree with you about the flare. TBH I'd rather they went super aggressive with their coating and just muted that flare as much as possible
no distortion in static shots but when you start moving theres is a loooot weird movement in the frame lol. i personally like that thing, i use only for indie shorts, but if you shoot real estate type things or car commercials, when simmetry is priority its unusable for sure
@@BogdanSorlea I thought that’s what I was gonna do as the bigger distance between the two would be better - but a lot of times I run two cameras at once and I see us using the wider lenses more than the 50. I’ll probably snag it really quick anyway.
gotcha, makes sense. thought it was for a one-camera setup, in which case 27 and 50 is the better bet. I also still need to get the 50, as the card bounced when trying to do so (damn you, GreatJoy! :)))
Now that I read about the silver version, have you considered putting the 1.35x GreatJoy on the Nanomorphs like you did with the Sirui 1.33x? With the Laowas, it would become 2x (not exactly but negclectable rounding)
Not gonna lie, at the beginning I freaked out a little because I thought my headphones were broken. Some heavy post process on the voice, huh? I asked on Indiegogo earlier today, there they said it's 33mm image circle, which is quite something I must admit. The clean look isn't bad IMO, and anamorphic character comes through... just a bit too little. Do you know if they plan on a longer lens as well, say 80 and 120mm or so? Regarding the flares, you put it really well. It's flat, clean, boring. It looks indeed like anamorfake, or a (bad) lens flare OFX. On another note, AFAIK the most common form of colour blindness is red/green weakness. As soon as you squeeze your vision though, it seems to become blue/green. This is seriously the first material I saw with blue flares, all their own material was green (or torquoise at best). Any idea why the drift towards the hideous comes through so easily? When you show the front lenses it's obvious both have green coatings as well (WHY), but seemingly there's more to it. Anyway, if they made a Collab with GreatJoy, that would be ace. Either way, this would be the first anamorphic lenses I'd consider to buy. I won't, but I wouldn't mind.
Yeah, I botched the recording. Even added a note at 0:10, but doesn't make up for the issue. :( I just watched their own launch video and they mention a pair of longer focal lengths later this year. As for the flare colors, I don't know why mine came out the bluest. I just did white balance properly and tried to get a good exposure. If we overshoot the WB, the image becomes warmer and the blue drifts towards teal/green. I also have the feeling that a lot of people fancy that teal tone, because it matches ****TEAL AND ORANGEEE****, but I find it overused. I get you on the collab. It's like everyone is racing towards a similar endgame, but everyone is going from wildly different angles, so they cover each others' weaknesses, but no lens has it all just yet.
@@AnamorphicOnABudget sounded like an old telephone. I digged that shot with the perforation on side, it really sold the sound! Ah, I haven't seen the official release now, only the clips shared before (and screenshots). As it's the official source, I would kinda think they don't grade flares so much; as WB is blue/orange ratio, a heavy drift should make blue flares neutral, no? Or torquoise.. don't know. Could be it of course. I certainly like the trend of low cost lenses coming to life, with PL/EF options, with nice formfactors. And, in this case, even with some corrections of common flaws (mumps for example). So it's not standing still. Either way, anything GreatJoy and Laowa and even Sirui did so far is nicer than what Schneider tries to pull off, haha
Yes, I'm using the Nanomorphs for the talking head. I don't remember the combo anymore, but it usually shows up at the beginning of the episode. Very likely the 35mm
Every other channel got Leica 9mm video premiere ... but this is the best news :). These lenses looks amazing for this price point. Now I got a problem - Do I want EF, PL or E-mount ? ... I got BMPCC6k and A6600 atm. I guess I'm gonna go with EF and that way I can use them on both cameras with MC-11.
@@AnamorphicOnABudget Seems EF is PL convertible by user. So this makes even more sense. Probably would never get PL mount camera, but there is no limitation. Not sure what is the form of sell on indigogo. I will probably wait till it hits conventional shops cause I need VAT invoice for my company.
Thanks for the great video! They look really interesting, given the cost, size, sharpness, and availability to get in EF or PL mounts, and thus adapt to different systems. The one thing that I found off putting is that the "amber" flares are really. more of an orange, bordering on red that I found very weird looking.
I'd not call them cheap as long as Sirui is undercutting them either their lenses. These would be nice for gimbal use but I'd still get the Sirui just for the lower price - they also have lower T-stop if I remember correctly?
I think Sirui has the best look out of any budget anamorphic... there's some character there, it's not so clinical like these. I just wish Sirui had a PL option.
@tito, 2 Qs: 1. is it feasible to fit the EF mount version on BMPC4K with the EF-to-43 adapter? From your video, it won't work. (I'd infer from your video that it won't work due to the protruding rear element). I am thinking getting the EF mount version so that i can use it on my blackmagic broadcast g2 (EF mount), BMPCC4K (EF-to43 adapter) or sony A74 (EF-to-E adapter). Based on the issue of the protruding rear, i'd also assume that Great Joy 50mm anamorphic has the same problem - it cannot be used with EF-to-43 adapter), right? 2. Re your comments to Alexandru's test footage, I can't see the vignette when he uses the Sony full frame camera. But from Brandon Li's test footage, it's quite noticeable of the vignette from his Sony A7iii full frame (he has to zoom to fill). This is probably due to Laowa's S35 lens design. Is this assumption correct? Thanks
1 - You can use any adapters that don't have any glass inside them (focal reducers aka speedboosters are the problem). A simple "ring" adapter is fine. 2 - In his video he specifies he's using the S35 mode on the A7s body. The Laowas are designed for S35, so they clearly won't cover a full frame sensor.
im curious about the practicaltiyy of these lenses. clearly theyre not meant for a team to operate, so why is the focus throw 270º? and whats the point of a 55mm thread? Id much rather a wider opening.
You can stick them in small spaces with a motor for focus and operate from a distance. You can use them on FPVs, or crash cams, they're cheap and very replaceable in case of damage. These things alone make them stand out from the rest.
I'm super excited about these lenses, they are crazy affordable and no changing squeeze factor at different focal distances! How would you use the EF/PL version on the Red Komodo or C70 with the protruding rear element? Would it be alright to use them with the standard Canon EF-RF adapter, and just making sure to remove any drop-in filters?
@@AnamorphicOnABudget Yes please, I think that would be nice if you have the time. I am leaning towards the Great Joy as I use full frame and like the larger squeeze, the variable squeeze is an issue but I'll just have to shoot at infinity and >4m
Tito, first of all thank you very much for your video. I have a question, I have a Canon C70, would I be able to use this EF mount lens with an adapter?
From a travel perspective, Laowa seems to have presented the sweet spot. Perfect for a slightly more clinical look, yet "cinematic". Sigma FP in APS-C mode, anamorphic 12 bit RAW, in the palm of your hand? Or the Nanomorphs with the Great joy 1.35x adapter & BMPCC6K 6:5? The shallow depth of field & low light capabilities with APS-C size sensor, F2.8 aperture (plus adapter). Lot's of questions. . .Please answer them :) Cheers
@@AnamorphicOnABudget Ok, fair enough. :) 1st, it's amazing what the manufacturers bring to the market. 2nd, gr8 products again from Laowa, with gr8 focusing technology and insanely small size. Brilliant travel companions? Wonders on a drone? That said, from what I've seen, (not much), they appear to be way softer than what you've might expect. 1080p soft. Are they soft? They also seems yellowish warm. Are they warm? The price point is award worthy, though. Again, that said, if I didn't have to care about the size and weight difference, AND could afford the extra money, the 35, 50 & 85mm FF Great joy seems like a no brainer. (Depending on which camera you pair it with). Is it a no brainer? 😁 Sony A6600 crop 8-bit IBIS H264 SD card & nanomorph, or FP FF 12-bit RAW no IBIS ext HD & Gr8 joy? High quality channel 👍🏻, have a nice one
i might be biased because i own one but even the sirui's exagerated flares are better imo, the laowa really looks fake; an anamorphic flare also needs square-ish elements reflected in the flare to look good i think; the sirui looks so cool closed down! btw it'd be cool to see the flaring demos closed-down in the future, since flares change a lot depending on aperture
Only the small and creative brands are doing anamorphics, because the big brands are not interested in it. They've never been, which is why we never saw a Canon or Sony anamorphic even though we've been asking for years. ;)
@@AnamorphicOnABudget Will be saving my money for that day. Want to get into anamorphics, but need a lens that hits those baselines. Don't find squeezes under 1.8 to be compelling, and variable-squeeze looks like it would be an editing nightmare. Keep up the good work.
Got it! Thanks for the clarification. One more question I think you can shed light on. I am starting to think that with the increased resolution and pixels, in theory, could we just create the "Anamorfake" look in post? I mean I really do not like the flares and on more lens there is no "turn off" switch. Also unless viewing on a proper screen, x2, x1.8, x1.5 or x1.3 won't matter that much when viewed on mobile devices of modern computer monitor. The common aspect ratio is still 4:3 with only LED TV's or HDR enabled screen able to output at 16:9 or wide screen. I use mostly spherical lenses and I am just getting into the cinema lens or vintage lens options. What are your thoughts on the Anamorfake creation in post i.e using DR, Final Cut, AE, or Premiere? Thanks in advance.😊
Just wanted to ask a quick question: Are you planning to review the silver flare version of the nanomorphs as well? Because now it is really hard to decide which to pick up (Amber,Blue, silver)
Do you think that one day there will be “modern” adapters? like for example what Ulanzi is doing for mobile filming anamorphic adapters at affordable prices. I know there are a few out there but I’m talking about budget ones $200/$300 . It should happen, sometimes you don’t need the sharpest image to film, so the premium quality wouldn’t be an issue.
I don't think so. I think the end of adapters is coming and the last ones we'll see are Great Joy's 1.35x and Isco4All. At least, I hope the end of adapters is coming.
Very interesting. I have great joy 60m set and very happy with it. Been looking 2x lens. Maybe I could use great joy with this. I am sure it will work combined at 2.025x How would flares be? Blob flares?
Thanks for the review! Would love to know if the Great Joy adapter would fit on the 50mm lens and what that looks like. Oh, and also would that make it 2x?
"Could work" as in "could cover". But also going way out of the covered spec area and getting a ton of artifacts from the edges of the image circle. It's a very personal-choice-look which I certainly wouldn't recommend unless folks really know what they're doing.
The other comment I made bring up a intresting point/good topic I think is worth exploring. Is there a external Monitor out there that Desquezes the anamorphic aspect ratio to it's proper size in the monitor it's self and does it allow for fine tuning so it would not matter if the lens is 1.33 1.5 1.8 or 2X or what ever and is the monitor small enough to mount on a gimbal. (I.E on a handle or something)
Any smallhd monitor can do that. You can probably get a 5-inch and mount it on a handle. I have a video about the desqueeze part here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wHzO-V3EdEc.html
These anamorphics are awesome. However sense Black magic pocket 4k's settings only has a anamorphic setting in camera of 1.33 or 2X. I think Im sticking with sirui for the time being. But I LOVE that there are more lens company trying to compete when it comes to more affordable compact anamorphic designs. I can't wait to see where this market goes next.
@@AnamorphicOnABudget 100% but Are they even going to update the 4k? the last update had to be over a year ago and the 6k pro's last update was like a day or two ago.
Why do you need a Desqueeze option? Just do it in post. With 1.5 squeeze it’s not hard at all to get focus etc with no squeeze. I honestly prefer it. Then unsqueeze in post. The monitor I use has a desqueeze and I honesty never use it. I do a lot of rng with the aviascope which is …..okayyy but these would make this much easier.
@@AnamorphicOnABudget tq for ur reply…I am a filmmaker from India…obsessed with ur videos and want to use anamorphic for my indie project…will wait for these to get these …keep inspiring and rocking brother
Oof. Just dropped a wad on the 50mm Great Joy 1.8x, but getting swayed by these now, especially with that absolute bargain price for the full set. Maybe I should try to get a refund and snap these up instead? IDK.
@@cannono808 Using a Blackmagic Pocket 6K Pro mainly for personal projects and narrative work at the moment. Not specifically looking to make the jump to full frame, but the lens still looked pretty good on a Super 35 sensor with some cropping. There are characteristics of the Great Joy I really like, but had I known the Nanomorphs were coming I may have held off because on average this set seems a bit... friendlier and fully fleshed out as a consumer product, if that makes any sense? We're in the wild west of widely available budget anamorphics, which is exciting, but there's still a ways to go until we hit the ideal. I think this set might be the closest we've got for now.
Could be. hahaha. I don't remember. We're all Brazilian (that's my sister and my mom),, so we could've been speaking Portuguese then, or straight up saying "vamonos" in Spanish.
