The World's Unluckiest Lottery Ticket | Tales From the Bottle

If almost every lottery ticket is a loser, what does it take for a lottery ticket to be considered unlucky?
"A lottery (or lotto) is a form of gambling that involves the drawing of numbers at random for a prize. Some governments outlaw lotteries, while others endorse it to the extent of organizing a national or state lottery. It is common to find some degree of regulation of lottery by governments. The most common regulation is prohibition of sale to minors, and vendors must be licensed to sell lottery tickets. Although lotteries were common in the United States and some other countries during the 19th century, by the beginning of the 20th century, most forms of gambling, including lotteries and sweepstakes, were illegal in the U.S. and most of Europe as well as many other countries. This remained so until well after World War II. In the 1960s, casinos and lotteries began to re-appear throughout the world as a means for governments to raise revenue without raising taxes.
Lotteries come in many formats. For example, the prize can be a fixed amount of cash or goods. In this format, there is risk to the organizer if insufficient tickets are sold. More commonly, the prize fund will be a fixed percentage of the receipts. A popular form of this is the "50-50" draw, where the organizers promise that the prize will be 50% of the revenue. Many recent lotteries allow purchasers to select the numbers on the lottery ticket, resulting in the possibility of multiple winners."

Reminds me of a guy in 1980 who won the Finnish lottery while working in Sweden. He won 1 million markka and ended up owing almost 2 million markka in combined taxes to the Finnish and Swedish governments. To my understanding he had to pay over the original amount to sweden since sweden had a lottery monopoly and thus the foreign winnings were considered illegal. The agreements against dubble taxation between the countries did not apply to lottery tax at the time. He ended up having his house and cars repossesed. The guy was called Veikko Ronkainen. Little information about him exists online besides one interview from 1985.

Edit: of course, this also ignores the family thing.

@@Wyatt_James After all taxes and giving her family money, a proper investment would probably need to rake in at least inflation rates in order to take someone from their late 20s to their deathbed. Assuming she lost 30% to her family and taxes, an investment that pays out about inflation rates would currently make her about $365k a year. Which is certainly an upper class wage, obviously. And then to match inflation every year she would need to put 3% of that back into her investment each year. God, this really is the best channel. The humor is always on point and attention to detail (i.e. buttcheeks on the IRS) *chef's kiss*. What's really great about this episode however, is how easy to understand it was. I'd rather that money be split among my own family or closest personal friends. But I don't get why she wouldn't share anything with the truck driver who tipped her the ticket to begin with. Personally, I think either gifting him a truck or the sum of money to buy a truck would be more than fair. Of course she didn't HAVE to, but it just feels like that would have been the right thing to do. I probably would not go out of my way to seek him, but If the truck driver contacted me in her shoes, if he asked for all the money I'd tell him not happening but I would offer him the truck at least that he wanted. The only time the IRS ever comes after rich people, is when they are recently poor and suddenly come into money. Since they are new to money, they don’t know how to hide it yet, and they haven’t had time to hire the right accountants and money managers to properly move their money around to avoid all the taxes, just like all the old money does.

there are a LOT of stories of unlucky lottery winners. it seems like in most cases it's more like a curse than anything else. if i ever won a huge sum like that, the first thing i would do is keep quiet and don't let anyone know. just be rich in a very inconspicuous manner. probably conjure up a story about how i had a ingenious idea and it worked out pretty well, financially, so no one would suspect i had any more disposable income than necessary for my current lifestyle. put the money in a safe place, maybe tell the tax man you lost it or something xD. only cash transactions, obviously.

We all make those "haha if I win i'll ___" half promises because we know we won't ever win, yeah the onus was on her to keep her word, but at the end of the day people saw she had so much money and rationalized "she's got plenty of leftover, she won't mind giving me a few grand" That's like If I walked up to your house and BS'd a reason why I should own your garage and it's fine because you still have the rest of the house, its pure greed when someone has to use flimsy wordplay to assert they are owed something from someone else. She was forced to engage in gambling pools. Other waitresses have talked about how much they hate the lotto tips ("Thanks for NOTHING"). Money tips are better than stupid lotto tickets that waste your time. She was exposed to threats by the publicity (it wouldn't just be the employees and her ex, its EVERYONE). Her ex was an actual criminal. She had to fight for 13 years to not be ripped off for trying to share money with her actual family and friends. The IRS goes after who they think they can beat. They routinely give up when faced with actual wealth that can sue the IRS and make it more trouble than its worth. Poor people are just easier to bleed.
