I sincerely think that Midnight Library is best suited for us who have suffered from depression, mental health problems or near death experiences. I have noticed that those who have been fortunate to not have been through situations like these just do not get it.

When I worked in books, a lady said that often authors have just one great story/book in them. This is the one that gets them published and they get a lot of attention, success, and love. Then, they are empty and everything else they write is just a shell of the first book. I thought of that when you said about the trend of loving a previous book and the new one just fell flat.

i can see this being true. Book authors are only one person and coming up with unique stories is really hard to do alone. And alot of authors will spend years developing their debut book and when its successful, suddenly they have a career in writing and have to come up with something else.

I’d love to hear what books you’ve read that have explored the same topics as Midnight Library. I liked it for the satisfying yet predictable ending yes, but the topics it touched on I loved and would like to read more like it.

It’s so interesting, I felt the exact opposite about the Jasmine Throne! The first half dragged for me and took me weeks to read, but the second half I enjoyed a lot more and the ending got me really excited for a sequel. Still felt very conflicted. Funny how that happens!

I felt that too omg! I mean, I DNF'd it at maybe 30% because it dragged so much and I couldn't keep reading... But her other books are masterpieces. They don't drag as much because they're built as stand alone books. Highly recommend!!!

I feel the exact same about the midnight library. I finished it and just thought…that was it? That’s what everyone’s been raving about? Another popular book that I just hated was where the crawdads sing. I thought it was dull and I didn’t care about any of the characters, and the twist was so boring. I cannot fathom why it was everywhere all year

Where the crawdads sing was on my tbr until I heard about the true story behind it and about the sketchy author and her husband and the horrible things they did in Africa. I’m so glad I didn’t read it. I don’t even want to know what happens.

Spin the Dawn INFURIATED me! I was pitched Mulan meets Project Runway, and I was all for it...until it completely switched to a rushed romance adventure in the 2nd half. I've never felt so betrayed by a book!

For me it was The Invisible Life Of Addie Larue , it was so hyped and considering the fact that V.E wrote most of my favorite books, I had extremely high expectations which the book just didn't deliver. It felt lacking in story and -being very pragmatic - logic.

I feel like I had a lot of disappointments this year, but the ones that hurt the most were Malibu Rising (was expecting more from the buildup) and The Nature of Witches (such a good concept but lacking).

Totally agree on Malibu Rising. I’d like to see the author go back to a single POV and just focus on one person’s story. Her multi-POV books feel shallow to me.

I really enjoyed the tension between Hattie and Lucien in Portrait of a Scotsman, but I think I would have enjoyed the book more if the epilogue didn’t happen. The epilogue ruined the best part of the novel for me!

i was trying to think about how to summarise the jasmine throne when it came to the pacing and you summed it up perfectly!! i thought that it wasn't very plotline driven but i knew that it WAS in some respect, but when you said it kinda just happened offscreen suddenly it made sense 😂 i especially thought the ending was super anti-climatic, and the main action had basically happened a few hundred pages before but we didn't get to see much of it anyway.... i definitely agree when you said it feels like a prequel, as it's definitely set up a good starting point for the 2nd book~

Had a similar feeling about all the books I either dnfed or simply rated quite low. It always hurts so much more when you really want to love a book that simply isn't for you. Examples: -Ninth House -Call of the Bone Ships -Son of the Storm -Rhythm of War

I'm late to this party, but I wanted to say that I had the same response to Shadow of Night. I DNF'd half-way through out of a combination of boredom with the pacing and frustration with the characters (Diana and Matthew). I picked it back up a few months later as an audiobook and powered through. I'm glad I did because I liked the third book the best. Personally, I prefer the show to the books. They have to rush through a lot at times and I'm a little worried how they'll fit the plot points of book three into one season, but I like the subtle changes they made to Diana and Matthew's personalities. They are so much more likable in the show!

Loveeeeee all the discovery of witches books. The third was my least fav. Don’t love the tv show though. They rush the Diana and Mathew plot and drag out random plots that aren’t really in the book (at least they are just mentioned as happening in the background of the book but become like half an episode)

I’m glad I’m not the o ly one that found Midnight Library lacking. I think it could be an absolutely brilliant stage play, but as a work of literature I thought it above average at best.

I definitely understand your criticisms of The Midnight Library! Like you said, it felt quite cheesy and pandering which made it feel like someone turned what could have been a deep concept into a hallmark movie.

The Midnight Library was one of my three favorite books of the whole year. It was soooo good and will definitely be reread plenty of times.

I read Shadow of Night years ago when it first came out, and I remember having the same issues that you mentioned despite loving the first book and enjoying the third when it came out. I think a big part of the problem for me was that while Harkness' portrayal of that era was objectively accurate, she didn't really have the nuance to make it appetizing to a modern audience who now find those ideas appalling. There is an extremely fine line between portraying that kind of misogyny (among other issues) in a way that's engaging and compelling and in a way that's just frustrating and uncomfortable to the audience, and unfortunately it felt like the vast majority of Shadow of Night fell on the wrong side of that line. (To be clear, I don't mean that as a knock on Harkness specifically - its an issue that exists in literature, in film, in most art mediums really. It takes a special kind of author to be able to keep an audience comfortable and engaged in a setting like that, and her not being that author does nothing to take away from her overall talent.

I have a lifelong love of history and I’m currently majoring in it. “History is a different country.” is a phrase that has been repeatedly mentioned to me in my classes. As a history major, it’s been drilled into me that in order to study history you must do your best to abandon your preconceived modern biases for a time when studying different eras. It is a lot easier to do that while you’re reading about a specific period of time. I can’t imagine how difficult it would be for Diana to actually live it for months. Matthew was having a difficult time re-adapting to the period and his modern outlooks on witches, trying to not change the future too drastically, having his blood rage revealed to his mate and seeing someone he missed dearly took a toll on his relationship with Diana as well. I think that’s why their dynamic felt off to some readers. As you stated historians walk a fine line between accuracy and entertainment when it comes to fiction. The misogyny made me uncomfortable as well, but history is a different country. My biases didn’t get in the way too much. If certain things about the setting and time period made you uncomfortable that means Harkness did her job well even if it’s fiction. History shouldn’t make you feel comfortable all the time.

I haven’t read to sleep in a sea of stars yet but I loved the inheritance series. My Mum also read to sleep in a sea of stars and she loved it! It’s always interesting to see how different everyone experiences books even when we generally have the same opinions on books

I also enjoyed Discovery of Witches but struggled with the second book. Ended up DNFing and watching the TV show instead, which was a really good translation of the book to the screen. So if you want to know what happens but can’t get through the books, I recommend watching.

I skipped the second book in the All Souls Trilogy (Shadow of Night) because a friend said the misogyny in it would drive me crazy and I discovered I didn't miss any significant plot points and was quite happy with the third book

@@helceon same. I flew through the first book, and the second one took me ages to get through. Then, I flew through the third one. There were parts of it that I liked, but overall it was very meh. So glad it ended on a high note at least.

I read Matt Haigs book about his depression,anxiety and panic disorder and i really liked it so i understand where the theme for the midnight library is coming from so idk if I should buy it just to see what his fiction writing looks like

Like you, I had books that I hated and then books I liked enough and I was still disappointed by. Books I hated were Spin the Dawn and I’ll Give You the Sun. Books I was meh about was More Happy Than Not, The Year of the Witching, Children of Blood and Bone, and Summer Days and Summer Nights. Hopefully next year is better

I feel like I'm the only one who LOVED TSIASOS. It was one of the favorites I read in 2021. Oh well. Everyone is obsessed with The Green Bone Saga and it was all I could do to not DNF the first book so... I love your videos! I have read a bunch of them based on your recommendations.

Worst thing I read this year was This is How You Lose the Time War--I powered through it because of its length and really wish that I hadn't. I don't think I have ever actively disliked a writing style so much in my life. 🙈 Made me sad because the concept was so lovely, and some aspects were creative and clever, but it was really not for me. Close second is Eye of the World, which took me more than 6 months to finish... also heartbroken how much I disliked it because it's one of my best friends' favorite series. I wanted to like it so bad 😭

I usually e-read, but grabbed a physical copy impulse buy. I lost the physical book about 1/3 into it. When I found it behind the couch, I haven’t started it back up and it’s been 6 months! Not quite ready to DNF but, I think it’s heading there.

I love the whole "Discovery of Witches" series and I always warn readers that it is NOT anything like Twilight and Harry Potter. Anyone expecting these books to be like Twilight WILL be disappointed. Shadow of the Night is actually my most favourite of this trilogy precisely because it travels back in time to the Elizabethan era. I love History!!

For me the nightingale was a let down. The characters annoyed me especially Isabel ( I think that’s her name) and a lot of events seemed forced. And there’s this scene where the characters were dying of hunger and thirst and were weak from traveling and amidst it they made out.. and suddenly they were in love..

The only book on this video I loved was Midnight Library. I see your points. It was one of my first sci-fis and so I was completely blown away by it. Maybe a future re-read will seem less stellar. For now it’s a 5 star for me.

The Discovery of Witches series was also a DNF for me. I finished the first book out of spite and even though the concept of the 2nd I found super interesting the main characters and their chemistry was a big no for me sadly. Also A Gathering of Shadows by V.E Schwab. It took me way too long to get into the first book and while I really loved the world building I couldn't get over the main characters. I got about a quarter through the 2nd book which I've heard suffers from middle book syndrome and I just couldn't bring myself to pick it up again. Which really saddened me since so many people seem to love this trilogy. I might pick it up again at some point but there are so many other books out there that I don't really like to force myself to read a book after a few tries.

i enjoyed spin the dawn but i was also very disappointed by it. the pacing was so off, the first half of the book was so good but then the last half was so rushed, i did read the second book and i barely remember most of it, i thought the world was beautiful and i wanted to learn more about the mythology but we were thrown into a big quest that was way too rushed.

I actually really liked The Midnight Library and The Night Tiger. Though, I did have similar problems with the romance in The Night Tiger. He was… not the greatest love interest and it seemed like she didn’t even really care for him until he said something to her about it. But I still enjoyed reading it.

My least favorite book was "The Altas Six" such a let down. Nothing really happens until the last chapter and it wasnt enough to make me want to read the next book when it comes out.

This wasn't a great reading year for me. I had a bunch of two star reads and very few five stars and my average rating for the year was a 3.4. :/ I didn't make many TBRs this year and I'm going to plan more for 2022 and hope that helps.

I loved the Midnight Library. I had no expectations going in but I sat and read it in one afternoon and sobbed. It put into words the way that I had felt so many times in my life and genuinely put some things in perspective for me. I get that reading is subjective, but as someone who had a breakdown only a few years ago it rang true for how I felt and was probably the book that had the most impact on me this year. I get that it’s polarising but I think to call it cheesy is an injustice.

I DNF'ed To Sleep In A Sea of Stars, because I felt like every time the MC ran into a challenge, they quickly discovered that the alien tech could solve it. Super annoying to me.

My huge disappointment is The Inheritance Games series. I was so eager to buy it, bc of good reviews from my fav booktubers. I even bought the sequel before started reading the first book (damn me for doing so). I read both, but both are disappointing

Shadow of night was definitely not the best book of the all souls Trilogy, but you should do the audio read by Jennifer Ikeda, it makes it so much better and the third book is AMAZING!!!

I was pretty disappointed by the last book in the Crown of Feathers series. It just felt like neither side (good/evil) was willing to commit and the final battle didn’t have much stakes.

I was having a high expectations going into a vow so bold and deadly by brigid kemmerer but it completely disappeared me. I thought maybe, maybe, harper and rhen will have a happy ending but they didn't it was like everything rhen went through was for nothing. In the end I gave it only 2 stars.

I was also disappointed by The Midnight Library. I thought it waaay oversimplified depression. It made it seem like all you need to do is to change your perception and your depression would be magically cured. As someone who suffers from depression, I can attest to the fact that it isn't that simple. Bummed to see To Sleep In The Sea of Stars on here as that's on my TBR. Also, a little bummed to hear that the second book in The DIscovery of Witches series wasn't that good. It isnt an amazing series, but an enjoyable enough fluffy read.

I've DNF'd The Jasmine Throne and it breaks my heart because to my opinion Tasha Suri is THE BEST fantasy writer out there. Her duology The Books of Ambha is my all time favorite, with lush fantasy historical setting, complex characters and deep, beautiful romance in both books. I think maybe she's best at writing stand alone (since her first work is a companion series), I don't know... This year I've been disappointed by The Invisible Life of Addie Larue, that I didn't love as much as I thought I would given my love for everything VE Schwab, Lore by Alexandra Bracken that fell flat for me, and also From Blood and Ash because given all the hype I thought it'd be more than it actually was 😔

My reading year seemed to be very divided between AMAZING/new favorites and total flops, not a lot in between. A few low points for me were Space Opera, The Golden Compass & The Subtle Knife, A Discovery of Witches, and the newest 2 Dresden Files.

I enjoyed The Midnight Library. I gave it a 4/5. Another book that explores somewhat the same idea as The Midnight Library, is Recursion by Blake Crouch. My worst book was Gods of Jade and Shadow. Almost DNF’d the book, but I forced myself to finish it.

I had high expectations for For the Wolf because it was compared to Uprooted and The Bear and the Nightingale. I was INCREDIBLY disappointed!! For the Wolf is more like Red Riding Hood (the movie with Amanda Seyfried) and Snow White and the Huntsman in my opinion... not what I was looking for... :/

I'm still contemplating if I'm gonna DNF The Secret History. It's so popular and has a lot of fans that I feel like I had to check it out. But it bores me to death 😭 It also painful to keep on reading when i dont care about it. I'm just scared it's gonna give me a slump if I keep pushing thru it.

Normalise not finishing a book if you're not feeling it. Your time is worth more than wasting it on a book you cant stand. Move on to a new book that you enjoy more. The Secret History isn't going anywhere if you choose to not finish it.

I agree with the Jasmine Throne completely. The first half of the book really drew me in but the second half ran past and completely lost me. Won't be picking up the rest of the books in the series.

I liked Portrait of a Scotsman because of its politics :D socialism and marx can work as pillow talk for some :D I haven't read a ton of historical romances so I don't know how it's usually done but I appriciated how the difference in class is addressed and how the suffrage movement of the previous two books was expanded beyond the wealthier class.

My most disappointing were The Love and Lies of Rukshana Ali, Cinderella is Dead and Ace of Spades?! Thought I was going to love all of them but I was sooooo disappointed with all of them.

Omg okay I also DNFed Shadow of Night (not last year but in 2019). Nothing happens!!! It's so boring, all the choices Diana makes are so stupid? The side character who was obsessed with Matthew was annoying, and it was just... so long for nothing to happen! I get that the author is a historian but it just felt like that's what she was writing for, not advancing the plot.

For me "The Midnight Library" wasn't the "worst", but it was definitely the most juvenile and silly.

Mine was Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence. Didn’t even finish it because I was so disappointed. Also read the Throne of Glass books, which were pretty bad to me. And it wasn’t the worst, but I was disappointed in The Assassins Apprentice by Robin Hobb. Thinking of not continuing on with the series

The worst book(s) I read this year had to be The Witcher series, which really killed me because I LOVE the TV series. I was ok with the short stories, but the actual 5 book series was just...man, I barely was able to force myself to finish it. I was SO disappointed and I can only hope the show continues to be good because reading the series has now made me worried because of how much I just absolutely did not enjoy it at all. Super disappointing for me.

I had high expectations for priory of the orange tree but sadly it wasn’t for me and I’m mad that I didn’t enjoy it like everyone else.

Huge disappointment for me too. 90% of the book was building up to an explosive climax but when we got there....it was over and done with so freaking easily. Boo.
