I wrote for the Pitt student newspaper and was in the press box for this game. After the game Wanny was asked why he went for a 58 yard field goal on 4th and 7. He said, “I felt we had a better shot making that kick than getting 8 yards.”

Oregon State gave up 65 points the last game of the season to Oregon, so for them this was a vast improvement.

You should've definitely brought more attention to the wind that day......the wind had more to do with that stinker of a game than the teams did. I remember watching passes being thrown and the ball changing direction by 15 plus yards, it was one of the windiest games I've ever watched in my life. I've never seen wind effect a game like that for as long as I can remember. I'm sure there may be a few but man....that wind is what caused so much of the inept offense. That is obvious by the teams stats going into the game, those were two very confident and effective offenses going in to combine for a total of 3 points?! Dude that wind ruined the game, without a doubt.

You should a Rewind on the Euro 2016. How Portugal didn't win a single game in regular time, how France were defeated in their own stadium, how Ronaldo got injured in the final, and Eder who was a statistically a very poor striker for Portugal, scored the winning goal.

I went to Pitt at the time this game happened. I was working at the bookstore and this was on the radio. We actually turned it off.

My dad bought me tickets to this game for Christmas to celebrate my acceptance to Pitt. After the game we stayed in a hotel on the wrong side of El Paso and ate at the hotel restaurant (the only such establishment in the area).

Poor Pitt, they haven't been relevant since Marino was there.

I remember this game like it was played yesterday. The reason I watched the whole game was because of envy for the Sun and Warm Weather they played in.......totally forgot the game itself was a dud. Plus, CBS did NOT show the YMCA halftime show.....damn.

Pitt's football program the last few decades deserves a deep dive. The disparity between quality of talent and results is astounding. Let's start with the future draftees alluded to. Some notes about Pitt players in the NFL: -Pitt has been represented by at least one Pro Bowl selection every year since 1981--a longer streak than Miami (often called NFL U). -Some of the current players have been among the most successful at their positions for long stretches: Larry Fitzgerald (11 Pro Bowl selections), Darrelle Revis (7), LeSean McCoy (6), Aaron Donald (5), Andy Lee (3), and a breakout RB this year, James Conner. Miami: Frank Gore (5), Jimmy Graham (5), Vince Wilfork (5), Devin Hester (4), Greg Olsen (3), Calais Campbell (3), Sam Shields -Pitt has been named third among most-fertile college draft pipelines (Miami, USC) and second-most historical value of drafted players (Need I say No. 1?). So you get the point: Pitt's up there. And yet somehow it's not--at all. Since 1991 (the year it joined the Big East), Pitt has won precisely ZERO outright conference titles, earning just two Big East shares in 2004 (four-way) and 2010 (three-way). They've gone 169-171 since 1991. In 16 bowls in that span, Pitt has won only five. Their biggest nemesis has been their AD, which has had an odd penchant for firing conference-winning coaches. Walt Harris won Big East Coach of the Year to open (1997) and close (2004) his years leading Pitt, but they ran him out of town and let him go to Stanford. Pitt went 9-4, 8-5, and 8-4 in his final three years, including Pitt's only BCS berth in 2004-05, the best three-year run for Pitt since 1981-83. His replacement, Dave Wannstedt, won 16 games combined in the following three seasons (2005-07), leaving many to wonder why they had chased away Harris. But in the next three years (2008-10), they repeated the mistake: Wannstedt averaged nine wins a year, culminating in the shared 2010 conference title, so the administration fired him before the bowl game. Thus began a humiliating coach carousel that included the second-shortest tenure in FBS history--the guy never coached a game--and an appropriately mediocre 53-51 record in the eight seasons hence. Even the division title this season was a clear sham from a weak schedule. Regardless of the coaches, the team has had an undying habit of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory and rallying for comebacks that almost always fall just short in the end. Their biggest victories have come when already eliminated from bowl contention: 13-9 in the 2007 Backyard Brawl to prevent No. 2 WVU from seeing the title game and 24-14 in the last game of 2017 to ruin No. 2 Miami's otherwise perfect regular season (5-7 final record both times). They also upset No. 2 Clemson in 2016, 43-42, the only loss for the eventual national champion. But for each of these crazy upsets, there are multiple dumbfounding losses--and near-losses to FCS teams. Some have cost conference titles or championship berths, but most come in the actual bowl games, where the play is so uninspired it leaves fans wondering why they bother returning every fall.
