It makes me wary when I go onto people’s decks. I saw a deck collapse once with a bunch of people on it. There is a lot more information available for handymen now than there was back in those days.

Holy crap! First thing I notice is the joists are running the wrong way! If you could even call them joists? It’s just a box nailed to the side of the house! I hope you find a rim joist!

I love these videos on how bad this deck was built. Well let's just listen to your words. The deck is 30 years old. Now just how long do you think a deck should last? You are lucky to get 15/20 years. Materials have gotten better over the years, that will reduce rot, making for a longer life.

Were you burning pressure treated wood?
@NickMango

I don’t know if it was pressure treated when it was bought 35 years ago. If it was, it definitely wasn’t any more.

@NickMango I just wanna say I’m by no means knocking the great job you did brotha, but I think what he means is, the ladder should be leaning against a solid stable structure the one your working on or tearing down, I’d even use a two sided ladder 🪜. By the way great job again brotha 💪🏾

Disappointed to see you burning all of that painted lumber. Why not choose a more environmentally friendly means of disposal?

In the grand scheme of things, it's irrelevant.

The guy isn't in a city. In a city you have to be careful about burning. In the country just don't burn plastic or tires and you are ok.

First off 35 years old and still there,but built totally wrong?to the point you couldnt pull it down,and obviously the post WAS anchored lol
@NickMango
@NickMango 10 месяцев назад
The post sunk into the ground. It wasn’t anchored. And yes it was built completely wrong. If you can’t see that, please don’t ever build a deck.

It's stood for 35 years and it took an awful lot of effort to get it to come down. I'd suggest it's not really that badly made.

@@NickMango It didn't break until you broke it, and you were happy to lean a ladder against it...

Bro, that thing was built ass backwards. The joists should be running from a rim joist to the beam. The rim joist should be secured with lag bolts and 4x4's shouldn't be supporting a deck that high off the ground. A deck should be able to hold 12 people and a couple of tables and a grill. That thing wasn't safe to walk on.

Worst deck ever built that lasted 36 years and only came down after 90% of it was removed...... it would have lasted another 36 years with no maintenance... some of the plastic decking will be done in 10 years..... how bout title , " How to replace with a better deck design" ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
@NickMango
@NickMango 2 месяца назад
That deck wasn’t used in the previous 15 years. It’s horrible. It was nailed to the siding. That’s the only thing holding it up. Just because it existed for 30 years doesn’t mean it’s good or safe.
@TwinMcQuerns
@TwinMcQuerns 2 месяца назад
That's a 12 foot ladder he is on. You think he wants his family on an old badly built deck 12 ft off the ground? Even 35 years ago that was the wrong way to build a deck. He is going to build something nice and safe for his family to enjoy. Instead of just saying "good enough for grandpa" Crack a code book and learn something.
