I feel like Seth McFarlane went to karaoke bar, watched a woman waiting 20 minutes for the song to start while on stage, and then decied to use it as a joke
When you said “endurance test” it made me think it should be in some sort of physical gameshow challenge where people have to go the longest of watching bad family guy skits without falling asleep or having a mental breakdown
Seth MacFarlane said they do that kind of gag when FOX won't let them do the gag they want. They make FOX pay for the rights to the video to spite them for not letting them do their original gag.
Not to mention. It wasn't just a one minute cutaway gag. It was a one minute cutaway gag with almost no actual animation in it. Peter only tapping his foot for the first 60% of it is one thing, but Lois is completely static for like 95% of the scene.
Jokes like that can work, but the thing it’s extending needs to be funny in of itself, like the Sideshow Bob rake scene If it’s just… this, it’s exhausting And it was already set up so halfhazardly
Yeah i know right its worse than the producers trying to choose a celebrity to insult. (Cuts to the producer room with a bunch of producers talking) Producer: Ok guys next episode who should we mock? Producer: Well we could always do The judges off American Idol. Producer: Nah we've done that how about we do one on Alan Rickman. Producer: You idiot he's dead did you forget that? Producer: Well we could always do Milia Kunis Producer: Yknow I'm starting to think the more jokes we do the more this season is gonna suck.
Honestly I was smiling until he started singing/talking, like there are hundreds of ways to make a punchline work there, have him breathe then cut away right before he sings, maybe even have the machine die before he sings, you could even do something wholesome where Lois joins and play into the absurdity. Idk im not a writer, but as a viewer that's what would have made me enjoy this moment.
It’s just because of how long it is dragged out of nothing really happening, also I know the animation has been like this for awhile but it would’ve been funnier if he was more lively
The point of the joke is that he knowingly spent that much time building up nothing. If the machine broke, it would have been less funny because the whole setup for the joke was that Lois was annoyed with his karaoke phase, so having the machine break wouldn't be Peter's fault, and therefor the "Peter is annoying" setup wouldn't have resolved. And if the scene cut away before he sang, then there's no joke because, again, the humor is in the anticlimax. Now, to the uninitiated, "anticlimax" sounds like cutting away would fit perfectly, right? Well no. Anticlimax requires an actual conclusion. The point of anticlimax isn't to avoid a conclusion, it's to provide an unsatisfying conclusion. Also, why would Lois join? Again, the cutaway was prefaced with "Peter is annoying" so Lois joining would both make no sense and not really fulfill any joke format. Long wait, then she joins. How are those two things connected in any way? Long wait, wait not worth it. That's the connection. That's the joke. Also see: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E-xhxS581Uc.html Except in this case, the anticlimax is the fact that you know exactly what's coming and it takes forever to get there and the thing is clearly not the big deal it is being made out to be.
@@gagejoseph91 It's way less absurd because the Krabby Patty announcer was very enthusiastic in the beggining and this scene was less dynamic. An actual climax would have fit better.
I feel like if family guy was all cutaway gags it wouldn't be so bad, but the fact that this is here just takes away from the fact that there's a plot happening in the background. The bit works great if it's just building up to the one dumb piece of payoff, but the fact that this is a cutaway means that we have to cutback eventually.
@@ewwpoorpeople5684 Yeah so what? I usually just enjoy those gags. Who tf cares about a story? This isn't Game of Thrones or Bojack Horseman. It's just for comedy
The Simpsons just needs to end. Futurama ended off with a memorable fucking bang, and I consider that Matt's BETTER work. The Simpsons is just confused whether it's alive or dead at this point, basically turning into Schrodinger's cat.
I don't think it was the worst, the idea was actually pretty funny because yes, the intro to Baba O'Reilly is very long. The execution was just very poor because there was barely any actual animation. Part of it is kinda beyond the animators' control because they aren't really allowed to do any additional movements outside of what the storyboarding department drew.
I agree. The intro being long did make it funny cuz it’s like I’m waiting for the song to start and Peter did do some leg movement and stuff but Lois was so still and not blinking so it made it kind of awkward
I literally could have written this better. No puke in the sink, just an extremely long wait during the intro... that's interrupted occasionally by Lois' nagging.
I have to say I agree the joke as an idea is rather amusing, since no sensible chap would ever sing The Who's Baba O'Reilly in a karaoke... But yes the execution was a bit off, I would have liked it better if it happened in a karaoke bar filled with young people not knowing this song and being pissed off about Peter not singing but doing these nonsense movements instead.
I’m not gonna lie I chuckled just out of how I waited a minute just to hear him in monotone say “yeah I threw up in the sink” between lyrics. Honestly wasn’t as bad as I was expecting.
@@quackster8295 Bruh are you being serious? You call this lazy filler "comedy"? I don't even like the simpsons but atleast their fans aren't nearly as braindead as Family Guy fans
I see the joke they were going for. It could've felt more in place if they made it shorter and put effort in to Louis's movements. Otherwise the joke itself isn't bad at all. Afterall, a lot of their cutaways are suppose to simulate actual awkward situations in real life.
The thing is it is a complete waste of time. I know they were trying to be ironic but it seems like a complete waste of time. I would have rather spent 5 seconds laughing at an actual funny joke than 1 whole minute staring at peter slightly moving his body to a song.
The worst thing is that someone was paid to suggest this, aprove this, and animate this. The fact that this was approved shows how much family guy has run out of entertaining concepts for cutaways.
Well, there is this one cutaway featuring a female frog in a bar being ogled by some frog guys. Idk the episode off the top of my head but that one is worse imo.
"Mr McFarlane, we still need to fill about 60 seconds more for this next episode. What kind of clever joke do you suppose we should write for our comedy show?" "How much are the rights to play Baba O'Riley?"
There's a 10 minute episode of Dexter's Lab that is just Dexter's Dad lining up a golf putt. That's it. It's like a 20 second loop that plays for 10 minutes
Honestly, I wondered how they get away with having copy written music in. Well, farm instead of fight could be a way around this without people noticing like everyone has
Just incredible, You can actually SEE the frustration emanating from the person who recorded this from, I'm going to say Netflix? as Peter prepares to sing his song. Truly amazing stuff!
@@ChuckECheesesKid9000 Heavy sarcasm is implied although I didn't say I wasn't taking it as a 'good joke', The entire comment was meant to be sarcastic. but it's ok if you didn't understand the joke. My dog burping would be a better cutaway gag than this shit.
It inspires a reaction and that’s entertainment! The fact that I actually searched for this specific cutaway and found someone had uploaded it just goes it show it had an affect! To me there is a number of things that make this funny; the anti-climactic build-up, the observation that the quality of most karaoke machines are piss-poor and that you think this is worse than Conway Twitty 😂 there’s something to be said for Family Guy always sticking to its own rules and not selling out to the network’s demands. This in itself is something the network has then been able to package and market which is probably why they can get away with so many 1% gags. There is something very Dada about these jokes but they are an art form! Reminds me of Andy Kaufman which is probably why I enjoy them so much 😂
I don’t wanna call the animators lazy since this probably wasn’t their decision, but somebody definitely made this gag just to save their already small animation budget
Yeah I feel like in the early seasons they moved more “human like” but now they stand still like manikins and blink once a minute. No disrespect to the animators cos like u said it’s not their fault but yh
@@anoniemonbekenden8159 I had to look that up to see what you were talking about...it's awful, but again it at least took the bare minimum of effort to photoshop that wig on and it doesn't last a whole set so it's not the worst/laziest
I think it's hilarious the way it is. It's mocking the song for having an unnecessary long intro and Peter's dedication is also funny because he could have just fast-forwarded to the singing part, right?
There are tons of bad Family Guy jokes, but this one at least has something going for it in that it's a bit of a subversion. Like that alcoholic elephant one
I like to think that a lot of that money probably goes into cocaine or other drugs because many people in the film industry often use them. A professor of mine who worked at Cinecittà (Rome) told me that even, in the budget of a film/TV series they were making, they were also asked to count the money needed to buy cocaine.
This is what's called a shaggy dog joke. It's purposefully long winded and anticlimactic. The joke is that they managed to hold your attention for such a long time for no reason at all. It's anti-humor. It's not stupid or lazy. It's completely intentional and designed to fuck with the audience. I don't like shaggy dog humor, but I can still recognize it for what it is. EDIT: cry harder. Your salt nourishes me.
I feel like that's the bane of Family Guy's existence. Didn't know its humor had a distinct genre; I'd just thought it was dry humor that was executed poorly. A few of such jokes would be fine, but in my opinion, they're what the show depends on to make its audience laugh, and with them being used so frequently, they just get old pretty quickly, as does the show, ultimately.
Yeah, I've noticed that they seem to be intentionally making them last for a while. remember that one scene from S18 E1 where meg's boyfriend's head gets decapitated, and when meg comes to save them from the sinking ship, his head falls off again and Chris has to try and throw it back up? Here's the scene in case you have no clue what I'm talking about: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eEMI0icwPHg.html&ab_channel=CorSal
It's not a shaggy dog joke. A shaggy dog joke relies on the floor being ripped out from under you, with every thread of the story being thrown out with the too simple punchline. This isn't a shaggy dog joke because you can tell from the first second what the punchline is going to be. The vocals are going to kick in, and he's going to say "yes." Think about Norm Macdonald's famous "Moth at the Podiatrist" joke, and imagine how unfunny it would be if, instead of the minutes of well written dialogue in the middle, it was just, "A moth goes into a Podiatrist's office," Sixty seconds of complete silence, "because the light was on."
The identity of modern Family Guy is their cutaway gags, not the actual story since they gave up story/character development long time ago. Even then, their gags are a hit or miss.
@@jaisotheunfathomablybased7135 It never gets brought up again with the exception of times they make him do dog stuff that is out of character for him. They even did an episode all based on Stewie's first words being "FUCK" but the problem was he talked before to people including his own family. It didn't add up the timeline, and I never could focus on the episode with that in the back of my head. This goes back to when I said how "they gave up story/character development long time ago."
I can see why people why people hated this cutaway, but honestly, in my opinion, I thought this scene was pretty funny. The fact that Peter doesn’t answer Lois immediately when she asked him if he threw up in the sink and gestures her to wait until he starts singing up until the point when he just says, “yeah that was me” makes me chuckle every time. It’s not the best cutaway, but it’s not exactly the worst. Once again, this is all just my opinion.
@@henrynelson9301 pardon, but did you read what he said? He literally just stated his opinion in a RU-vid comment section. Not right to the Family Guy executive team.
Modern family guy in a nutshell. “Jokes” stretched on for like a minute, just for the characters to literally say the “punchline” thus making it even worse.
@@ti-fiter these people don’t understand comedy. What they like to watch is a horribly animated show called South Park, where the animation looks like it was designed by some 6th grader for their Design class and the voices sound like they are done by people with marshmallow stuffed in their mouths.
If anyone doesn’t get this the song actually takes 2 minutes at most before there’s vocals and that’s what makes this cutaway funny but awful cause there just standing there waiting lol
The fact that Baba O'Reilly has a long intro is not funny nor a good target for parody. Lots of rock songs have long intros. So what? Parody and satire are for things that are silly, lame, wrong-headed, etc. There's nothing about Baba O'Reilly or its intro that meets any of those descriptors.
I found it funny.....it's super pointless and that's the whole point of family guy.....and the fact that he was the one who puked in the sink makes it better
This kind of stuff where you wait unreasonably long for an underwhelming punchline can be funny if you’re having fun with your friends and a really funny guy does it. It’s infuriating when you’re trying to watch a show.
This is much funnier than what people are suggesting, which is to have it cut away right when he inhales. It’s funnier for him to wait through the entire intro without saying anything, but waiting until AFTER the first lyric to finally answer her question.
It's more insulting than anything that they would put this on the screen to waste an entire minute of the audience's time. There are a couple more cutaway gags that are even worse. One being a single frame of a radio being shown for an entire minute straight, no animation whatsoever. There are also those cutaway gags that are just taken from old TV shows that can last anywhere from 2-4 minutes, just awful!
Better joke if he said "to explain how i threw up in the sink, let me take you back to 1987! Our story starts with me, yes thats me in that silver coat over there, I was the biggest hotshot in dodgeball..."
“Worst Family Guy cutaway gag ever.” Me: Hmm. Interesting. I accept your theory. What happens? *Peter not answering Lois at all while “Baba O’Reily” is starting* Me: This was such a waste of time!
That Hudson Brothers "Razzle Dazzle" cutaway was a thousand times better than this one. First, it was a fairly obscure (but memorable for many people, I'm sure -- including me) cultural reference to our generation's childhood and Saturday morning television, and second, it at least had some interesting visuals to go along with the nostalgic pop culture reference. AND, unlike _this_ gag, it had a punchline (cutting back to Peter and Quagmire as old, white-haired, long-bearded men).
