I personally love this game and the atmosphere it has, despite all of its flaws. It just sucks that the game was beyond rushed. Most of the gameplay elements were very VERY last-minute, they had a far bigger scale in mind when developing it and honestly I hope someday we get a true remake. They spent the first couple of years of development working on the environments and models and only near the end they were forced to put it all together into something playable and release it before it was truly finished. There's actually a whole bunch of chapters, enemies, weapons and gameplay elements that were cut because of this. Which is truly unfortunate.

@@owenhammond1880 I mean, the game was in development from 2003 to 2006, that was a long time and it wasn't until the final year and a half where they started to really bother with polishing up the gameplay aspect of it. Unfortunately it was too late for them to really go ahead and add what they wanted to add, Publishers like to set deadlines. They fund the project, they expect said project on time. Its unfortunately how it is.

Heyy, this is one of my childhood games! (Polish). The game looks way better on older systems, back when I played it on windows xp I encountered little to zero bugs at all. Now my pc doesnt even play the cutscenes. The polish voice acting was actually decent The box of the game came with a little booklet containing not just ingame instructions, but descriptions for every weapon/enemy. Tl;dr each monster is a consequence of the artificial growth of their respected agriculture (the chickens were fed special seeds to speed growth, welders were equipped with mini propellers, soldiers brainwashed etc). Hope this clears some things up!

I loved this game when I played it, the combat is good enough, the atmosphere in some areas is top notch, I think the idea of a radio tower mutating/fucking with reality is really neat, and the game is just quality jank imo. I actually bought the jewell box on release. It came on 3 separate discs and key bindings were broken. Can't tell you what possessed me but I ran through the entire thing using arrow keys for movement and L Ctrl for reloading - thank God it's a short game! It's a very odd bird, feels like a promising demo of a potential game, rather than a finished product.

For anyone having jittering issues - it is tied to CPU uptime (don't ask why, just make sure to reboot your pc if you want to play it, it becomes unplayable if it goes 3+ days). Very nice and concise coverage of this "hidden gem". And thanks for a shoutout! Also now I finally have seen how black textures, that people ask me about, look like. Sadly didn't really have access to a pc where this issue was present to try and pinpoint solution :(

Well the titel explain the story...depend on your View. you are the only person that resist those PSY tower becaus during the coma, you brain was empty. Or you are empty mean the mind of your enemys. those once normal humans that want to kill you or even mutatet...now there minds are empty. Or the 3 option... during the cutscene we get hints that the main person we play have some mental psy powers and can controll animals. Becaus he and the seincetist that create the machine were the only one with those powers...you are allone...what in this context was alter to you are empty.

One part bioshock, one part metro, a dash of Call of Duty zombies, a good mix of Resident Evil and garnish with a few drops of beholder. This game was throwing around some really interesting ideas I would like to know how it would have came out if it had more time and a better development cycle. I dug up the intro cut scene and I think that first cut scene alone shows you that they have much greater ambitions for the game. The potential for an alternative ending implies complicated development that perhaps it was an option that they were working on.

Even though the gameplay is rough around the edges, the oppressive atmosphere of this game is tough as nails. It's been a very long time since a VIDEOGAME made me feel the true sense of dread and horror. And not just the type of horror that you feel after a shitty jumpscare, but an actual "oh god, i don't want to be here and i don't want to go any further" type of horror. ANXIETY type of horror. The game's not perfect, but it does have a very freaky atmosphere, which is something that i appreciate very much. Modern videogames simply don't have it. Also, a few side notes, the giraffe sized broiler chickens are actually inspired by the chicken monsters from a book "The Fatal Eggs" by Fedor Bulgakov. Meanwhile the trashy english vocalization is the fault of ... bad english actors. Which doesn't seem to be the case with russian voice actors. I have seen the gameplay videos of the game using its original vocalization (russian), and all the human characters actually have good deliverance and intonation of the lines, especially the guy that voiced the old feller warden that you showed at 9:09. Even the lip synchronization is matching pretty well with the russian voice lines. No idea how you managed to encounter these missing, pitch black textures. Since i'm using nvidia GPU, perhaps its just your AMD graphics card being arsy?

If anyone ever tells you that games are not art or worse that they can never be such (cough Roger Ebert cough), please do merrily point them towards Silent Hill 2, Undertale, Spec Ops The Line, the Hotline Miami duology, killer7, Disco Elysium, the entire soulsborne series and Vangers. That's just atop of my head. Games add so many more dimensions to art beyond just interactivity. There's a good reason why there's so few effective horror films, but effective horror games are a dime a dozen. It's because you are at the center of the horror and that makes it hit infinitely harder than being a detached observer during a movie.

It's really not, because those don't exist. Quality is subjective and all standards are arbitrary. For example: The Room cannot be a bad movie because thousands of people enjoy it, and nothing else you can save about it matters to me. There is also no such thing as good art, just art our Eurocentric sensibilities tell us to enjoy. As any meaning a story may have can only affect you if you choose for it to, any deep message a movie may have doesn't in any way elevate it over a movie with no intended message whatsoever, especially as people will inevitably imbue it with one anyway. Fighting against the rhetoric of "good" and "bad" in art is pretty much my life goal at this point in life.

One interesting thing that was not mentioned in the video is that the game does not contain any lighting. When you see a darker or brighter version of the same texture, it is actually a different texture. If I remember correct, you can extract the textures from one of the games directories and there is an insane amount of them because the devs chose this weird simulation of lighting instead of actually programming one.

Games to an extent are art. Halo Reach is a prime example of this. I feel like it goes both ways. Halo Reach really focus's on the atmosphere and the setting you are in making you really take in the beauty of the world you are fighting on thats about to be turned into an all out hellscape and warzone. Each game is different and subjective. Some are, some are not.

You might want to give Cruelty Squad a look, like this isn't a meme it's just a really good game once you get past the audio-visual clown vomit and unorthodox controls. There's lots of hidden stuff and cool easter eggs. This game is just like Gorbino's Quest, It is the Gorbino's Quest of video games.

Fun fact: this game has a ton of unused enemies, weapons, locations, etc. Its story is that a scientist with superpowers convinced Stalin to create a utopia with superhumans and they have an experiment to make superhuman soviet citizens. Something goes wrong during the experiment and all the people go insane. Thats why u see deformities on some enemies, those rotor blades and metal grafted onto some enemies,(USSR guys tried to enhance them, those rotor blade guys are welders so they have easier ways to weld), etc. U get hit during the experiment by a car so you were asleep and thus unaffected by the mindwaves. Its basically Ukrainian version of BioShock before bioshock. Another fun or not so fun tidbit which any non cyrillic speaker would miss out(im not even sure why they included it but they did nevertheless ). I dont think this type of "joke" would fly even in Eastern Europe anymore. At 6:43 when you fight on that rooftop it says Слава КПСС( Glory to CPSU , which is the Communist Party of the Soviet Union) but since КПСС is spelled KPSS, and the first to letters are scripted to fall down, it becomes...well...yes.. Glory to SS.

On the topic of movement speed in video games. I don't wanna start an overly viscious debate here, but some games are *meant* to be taken slowly if the developers intended it. While I've never in my life have played YAE, I believe its slow movement was necessary. Mandel have created a truly messed up world on which you're supposed to take in the atmosphere and address your surroundings while trying to survive. Sure... The bugs make this game hard to defend, but I think there's no reason to "mod" a sprint button into it. If you wish for a slow, but enjoyable experience, I greatly reccomend trying out Industria. It's like this BioShock/Half-Life inspired game where you're stuck in an abandoned city infested with robots. Slow games CAN be good when they're done right. YAE was just unfortunate enough to release during the time where everything was just "CoD, CoD, CoD. We want more fast action games like CoD".

To clarify the point of the title of the game having no relevance, "You are empty" likely refers to the games main antagonist. He can be seen in the cool looking black and white cutscenes detailing his backstory (as confusing as it was represented). Basically, the Antagonist was a psychopath with seemingly telepathic abilities. In a flashback, the Antagonist remembers being in College and solves a math problem no one was able to solve, which equalled zero. Metaphorically meaning he was a gifted individual but was also empty and devoid of humanity. Just wanted to add to the discussion :)

I thought this game was a fever dream lol, had a vague memory that I once, somehow, managed to finished this game some long times ago. I barely remember what happened beside the first minute of the game in the hospital area and the ending with some guy wired into machinery, but beside STALKER and Metro series, this game made me fascinated with Eastern Europe/Soviet aesthetic.

The game actually explains on some of the monsters, like those dino-chickens. It could be found in some of those notes you are given to read. At least in the native version of the game. Maybe they smh missed it while making the version for USA. As far as I remember, dino-chickens appeared due to some experimental food or antibiotics in it.

Both this and Atomic Heart have one same goal: Stopping the Soviet's total control of the world through some mumble jumble 1950s science-fiction "Plan 9 From Outer Space" brain-control devices. But this game didn't have silicon-based curvy ballerina robots and somewhat looked like what the devs experienced during their time so this has more historical values, I guess.
