My worst service call happened about 35 years ago. This hot cougar home owner was putting the moves on me and I was too dumb to realize it....

Use a thermometer and test the pipes like you would a clogged filter drier. Put magnet on the outside of the valve body to see if it sliding inside. Very simple to diagnose. Most of the time the TXV fails due to being outside and the reversing valve is fine. Biggest thing that gets guys is miss diagnosing a weak compressor for a bad reversing valve. To test that just valve down the unit and see if it will pump down to 0.

I had a similar experience with a Goodman reversing valve and accumulator , stuff nightmares are made of

I replaced a compressor once only to find that the reversing valve was also bad. Never got paid for the reversing valve replacement. Had I known I would have condemned the unit but that's how you learn.

I had a situation like that a couple years back, R22 Goodman, believed the compressor to be bypassing and replaced the compressor, come to find out it was the reversing valve, replaced the valve and everything is working great.

Not an A/C guy but maybe you can appreciate this. I'm an automotive locksmith. Back in the day Medeco (expensive deadbolts) made replacement GM ignitions. They failed just as the OEM's but were a PITA to remove. They had a hardened collar and the collar had to be cutoff in order to remove a lock that wouldn't turn with the key. I put a towel over the dash and start grinding away with my die grinder. I get the lock out and realize my towel wasn't completely covering the cluster and it burned a hole through the plastic cover. I removed the cluster and pulled the burnt cover off. You could touch the dials now but it looked a lot clearer. :) I was going to go to a junkyard and get another cover. The lady comes out and says what's that pointing to the inside of the car. I apologized and explained to her what happened. She said no not that what's that on the floor? I told her it was shavings I had to clean up. She tells me not to worry about the missing cover. She liked it better that way and wasn't planning on keeping the car. lol

Ive replaced a few myself. Couple recent videos on them too if you wanna check them out. But yea it seems the easiest looking ones are the hardest. I used to unsweat them until i have a subscriber recommend cutting it out carefully with a sawzall and brand new metal blade. Done 2 like that and worked perfectly. 🤙

That makes sense, a bypassing reversing valve would cause the compressor to work harder and increase the amp draw. I got a call from a Jr Tech while it was out to dinner with my family last night, he went to an install warranty yesterday where he found that the heat pump is not cooling, he measured, low head pressure, high suction pressure, and the compressor was only drawing 2 A while the RLA is 11. I was trying to figure in my head whether it is a bad compressor that’s not compressing or a reversing valve that is bypassing. Now I am leaning towards, the compressor is just not compressing like it should. We’re going to have a senior tech go back to verify the readings.

If the evaporator coil has a piston and if its oversized, it'll cause those same issues

@@HVACShopTalk ok, ok, see I told you I was getting smartah! But it would still pump down manually? Could that be a a half assed diagnostic, along with temperature differences? Heat pumps are still kinda new to us northerners

Yep that would rank way up there on the worst day ever! A job like that is kinda a shot in the dark as it is like you said the compressor could be yanking your chain as well. Just one of those I gotta start somewhere might as well be here 😅. I can’t get over the final and ultimate fix a Goodman with a Trane badge😅 Ted Cook would give that one his nest thermostats fix lol I know you hated this one but it’s kinda entertaining if you watch the entire video. Funny how things like that get easier to talk about after 10 years or so 😅

I think I will recommend replacing system, because there are probably a lot more issues going with it,and once you spend all that time replacing valve, and like you mentioned, there are other issues going on,wasting time, you frustrated and customer frustrated, home still not cooling,I just won’t do any repairs to a reversing valve,I would immediately put on my Salesman hat at that point
