You have a good attitude and personality for retail. So do I. Been in retail waaaaay too long...it tends to grind you down. Rude customers and incompetent 'managers' - get these out of the way and retail would be great !
I’m so glad that you described the difference between the cashier and the cashier assistant. I wanted to be a cashier due to the dollar increase, but now that you mentioned that the assistant is better. I am so glad that’s the position they gave me. I’ve been a cashier off and on on for many years and I agree it could get very boring and style and time doesn’t seem to move regardless of how busy you are. I’m a new sub and I’ll be watching your videos, very excited to start my job there
Been a cashier for 10 yrs. For Grocery stores, for retail, for food service, and I am so tired of it. I want to do something different now. I need to renew my esthetician license that has been in the dust since Covid.
there is so much truth to this video. i've worked at costco for a year now. first as an cashier assistant and now, member services. lol i hated it as an assistant. boxing is the most boring thing and i absolutely hate doing carts and helping members load their purchases into their cars. i wanted to quit so many times and so i asked to do member services and finally applied. what you said about the job is absolutely true. a small minority of members are just awfully rude--both at the entrance and even worse at the exit. some don't want to show you their cards, try to bring their pets in, and then don't want us to check their carts because they have no patience at all and tell us they aren't thieves and you spend the whole day telling people they can't enter through the exit door. most cashiers can agree to what you said about that job too. the front end is a mad house and sh*t show but it's costco's bread and butter.
Refunds puts a toll on humanity. People are ruthless in returning almost ANYTHING. I try not to let it get to me but with the amount of food waste, it's INSANE. Also doing PROGRAMS is the worst. Hounding people at the register to upgrade and auto renewal and credit card. Emails are for the Costco App. For a BILLION dollar company, the registers are ANCIENT and need an upgrade!!! It's like running DOS. YES, membership services at the door is a horrible position. I hated it.
I asked for a list of everything we can donate, and whenever someone returned something we can't donate that we have to toss I'd straight up tell the person, just so you know we have to throw this away.
I work at membership and what ive heard is that at some point in the future were going to ditch membership cards and just use the app. When? Hopefully not anytime soon becuase the app sucks.
If you need a price or availability then goto the podium or supervisor in a red vest or someone wearing a radio. They can look it up in a matter of seconds
I worked at Costco 20+ years ago. Front-end in the cashier position SUCKS, on top of dealing with people you have to do the cart transfer, campaigns, etc. I rather be outside pushing carts or sitting in the cigarette cage (back when Costco sold cigarettes). Food court/meat department also looked good.
@@daveheel Cart transfer is when you transfer the members cart contents into a new cart when you check them out at the register, havent seen them do it in a long time.
@@daveheel I stand corrected! I watched an assistant do that yesterday lol. They do it so they don't miss scanning items and hopefully the person at the door catches it.
@@kodamachan9713 we don't do this at our costco. at least, i wasn't told to do it. it makes perfect sense to move them to another cart but they don't want assistants to move the heavy items so it's easy to miss scanning them. i'm one of the people at the door who catches these sort of errors.
I have always felt that the primary reason for the receipt checker is to prevent cashiers from letting friends and family through “accidentally” forgetting to ring/scan an item. Am I correct?
It's a bit of everything. If you're an employee on break or getting off work and go through self checkout we have to have an employee sign off our receipts there and then we do it again at the exit like everyone else.
i check receipt and i'd say most of it is to catch mistakes whether it's by the cashier or the member themselves in the self check out. there might be some theft but i think it's a small percentage and hard to determine. we have security who is employed primarily for that.
To add on to the cashier, one thing that should be mentioned is dealing with the incompetence of people. It’s not everyone but there are a lot of people who are lacking in situational and spatial awareness. Going through the employee side of the register, showing up to the register without a membership, waiting on someone to bring the last few items, not unloading stuff onto the belt, not putting the dividers to separate transactions. There’s probably more, but those are the ones I can list off the top of my head.
Costco has the fastest cashiers. You are faster than Walmart cashiers. Love all the free samples. What’s up with the cookie cost 2.49. Don’t understand that at all.
We are pretty fast at Costco! I wonder if we upgraded our registers; would we still be as fast? 🤔 And I agree, the price of the cookie seems a bit high IMO. But it's so delicious!
Some comments are not up to date. For example the comment about front end are the first to go help out elsewhere. At my warehouse in Australia we are so busy that we have anyone that knows how to cashier and assist help out front end. And this is happening even after blowing out payroll on front end staff.
some of our cashiers push carts, work the door, become assistants, do maintenance, etc. depends on what is needed and what people have been crosstrained on.
In my area, the cart crew is part of the front end (cashier assistant) but I have heard that in other locations it can be it's own position. TBH though, the last time I heard this was a few years ago, so I can only speak for my region which is Northwest
In my experience, any seasonal employees will be asked to help out in different areas (that don’t require much training) and if you’re good at any of those jobs, then they’ll keep there after your seasonal period (assuming they make you a regular employee). They’re basically throwing things at a wall to see what sticks.
i was assisting a cashier and a member had about two flat beds stacked with tons of clothing. they were being donated but looking at it gave me nightmares. they wasn't typical but cartful of 50+ items is common and then large furniture, mattresses, large tvs, etc. is just too much. plus hundreds of members and crying babies on top of it. it's a circus especially on the weekends.
Updating things cost money (more so than you think). If they replace the registers, they'll have to replace a good amount of the backend. This is not easy. I've been involved in several migrations to new systems. It can take years and millions of dollars. And when its all done, there are always bugs to work out... always. You need to keep things flowing smoothly or you lose more money. Cost plus loss ends up forcing them to raise prices, which may lose customers. So if its not broke, don't "fix" it. So many companies' downfall can be linked to unnecessary improvements.
@@TwilightRage2099 Then all the "genius" tech nerds to hurry tf up and start makin better chit then This world is at LEAST 20 years behind where it SHOULD be technology wise 2024 is what the 90s should have been Period
The packaging isn't really up to Costco, it's from the various vendors and manufacturers. Also, yes, the registers are ancient. We have a brand new Costco, maybe 3 years old now, and they have those same dinosaur registers.
I'm sorry members weren't nice to you in the Food court. Not sure why they would treat you different because you worked there, personally I try and said thank you to everyone. I think everyone would be happier if some item, like Ice Cream is out, that a sign be posted, so if you are waiting in line just for that, you aren't disappointed. As far as the cashier, I think it is partly a personality difference...working retail, I do my best work detailing the department I work in, and I really don't like standing at the POS and not being able to walk around. I like where it is is hot, so the employees standing by the doors contend with that like you contend with the cold. I've gone to the same store for many years, and some employees are still there from when it opened in the early 90's.
I think it really comes down to sometimes people are just having bad days and being hungry doesn't help and we get the bad end. Although we did have rude members, I still have very good fond memories of working in those departments. Being a Front End Cashier (and assistant) was great for a while, I think I just got bored with it's pretty fast and was craving something different :)
All the time! As a cashier, on busy days it was hard to get someone to check, or it would take a long time, so I just feel really bad for the members in line waiting for someone to run to a computer to check iai or itmw
in my location, you’re able to check the price of an item without a membership by pressing 6 + sign off on the register and scanning the item. i don’t know if it’s the same function for other places/ registers.
Oh my God I was a young adult and lived in Michigan. I was a member service greeter at Sam’s Club. It was horrible. Oh my God because I was trying to say hydrated. I was trying to pull out cards and give them to Customer and I had to use the bathroom a lot and the manager in charge of me I could care less what color skin somebody is I don’t care, but she was rude. The manager in charge of Me Was so rude about me going to the bathroom a lot and then there were these training video modules that I had to keep learning about and with my ADHD good freaking luck with that those things were hard hard to understand. I don’t understand a darn thing on those modules, while long BA role to finish every single one of them and complete my shifts.
just did my first day as cashier assistant, it was like ~1.5 hours orientation and like 2.5 hours of cashier assisting, wasnt too bad but i have to figure out the stacking process lol
Despite not getting discounts, I have heard that Costco is one of the best paying jobs around. People can just be rude, no matter the type of employment you have. #RFMvids
Oh for sure! There will be rude people everywhere. Costco does take care of its employees and I will forever be grateful for my employees there despite a few bad experiences.
HA! wait until you become a stocker/merchandising cuzo. I've been working for 2 years (still going) in merchandising and it sucks ass. I've been drive the forklift and double jack, fast and proficient mind you plus extra work like helping someone that has worked longer than me bringing pallets down and helping my crew stock the isles, yet they have never offered me a higher position. Also there is favoritism, don't let the benefits fool you because there are other jobs that can provide the same benefits and even more, even more pay. Trust me, its a fucking scam.
It's not for some people. I've seen plenty quit after one day. But others love it and that's why you see name tags with hire dates going back 10+ years. Benefits alone are some of the best and it's a major reason people stay.
@@Etch88 i just went for orientation today and they put me to work after, and during orientation they said that they often have people leave after 1-2 days and "disappear", so they said that if you really dislike your current position, ask them to switch and they will do everything possible to switch. they would rather switch you than have you disappear
@cretnotonic I'm an AM stocker. 415am to 1015am, it is definitely fast paced because we have to restock the entire store before opening at 10am, and sometimes I stay late just crushing cardboard and plastic because other employees just leave all the full carts in the back. I left construction to work at Costco because I had no options for insurance and Costco has the best insurance in my state by far.
