I was at both parades, the Dallas was worse than the Kansas City one, as a kid I was separated from my mom and brother. I ran, if anyone from Dallas remembers, where the DART buses did their hourly lineups, I was grabbed by a officer and took to the station. My mom lost me in crowd when grabbing my brother who was 3 at the time. My grandmother picked me up from the station because my mom was hysterical but we did reunite to next morning. I didn't understand my mom actions that day until a few days ago because as my family was walking towards the area where they were filming First Things First when I thought I heard firecrackers but then we saw the people running, at this point I grabbed my two youngest and my wife grabbed the oldest and we ran, we're ok, but recounting this to my mom she broke down. TL:DR: I was at both the Dallas and KC parades and left traumatized both times.

In the NFL, the Dallas one in 1993 was the worst one ever. Most of parades have been successful without anyone getting hurt, so these are rare occurances. There was a small shooting at the Toronto Raptors victory celebration in 2019 which shows you that this happens widespread and it's not an American problem. There might be an area where a shooting occurs or some type of riot or violent act.

I was at this Dallas parade that day. As crazy as it sounds in light of this video report, we had no idea of violence until we heard about it on the radio on the way home to the outlying area. It seemed most of the terrible behavior was in the area of the McDs downtown. From what many of the players witnessed, it seems now understandable why they weren't especially willing to engage the fans at City Hall where the parade ended. Many seemed very relieved to get in the buses provided them and sty there til pulling out.

There is another irony to the Dallas parade in 1993. I'm reminded of another parade in the same city (indeed on some of the very same streets), which I'm a bit surprised you didn't mention, although this was not a sports parade. Friday, November 22, 1963, President Kennedy was in a motorcade (attended by at least 250,000 on the sidewalks, to say nothing of the scores of people viewing from office buildings) through downtown Dallas on his way to deliver an address at the Trade Mart when he and Gov. John Connolly were both struck by assassins' bullets. Tragically, the president died of his injuries. Ironically, the remark had just been made to the president: "Well, at least you can't say Dallas wasn't friendly." It had been widely reported that both the Dallas Police Department and the Dallas County Sheriff's Office had made unprecedented preparations for this parade, particularly in light of what had happened a month earlier when United Nations ambassador Adlai Stevenson had visited the city. And, still, the president ended up leaving Dallas in a casket! To add to the shame of the parade itself, within forty-eight hours, the prime suspect himself would be assassinated on live television as he was being transferred from the city jail to the county jail. It could be said that the main reason for this latter incident is the fact that the time of the transfer had been announced in advance. Not even two security sweeps that Sunday morning would have prevented what happened because it had already been announced. That whole weekend was a disaster for Dallas because the city officials wanted to take advantage of their time in the lime light. Twenty-nine years later, the city still had the lessons of that parade on which to draw. Yet they chose not to. Again, the victory parade route covered many of the same streets covered by the presidential motorcade. (Commerce Street is definitely a common link between the two parades.) That clearly should have raised serious red flags, particularly for those who were serving in the same city departments during both events. But, apparently, it never even came up. Instead, it took a riot breaking out during the victory parade for the city officials to finally learn any lessons whatsoever. As you mentioned, what happened during the 1993 victory parade was completely avoidable. After all, the officials could see how well the team was doing during the season. And, to allow for the assigned players to participate in the AFL-NFL Pro Bowl at Honolulu, the parade was a week and a half after the World Championship Game. The city had time to plan the event and experience with similar events in the past. Even so, what ended up occuring was a shocking display of incompetence-particularly against the backdrop of what had occurred twenty-nine years earlier during a presidential parade in the same downtown area of the same city.

Some of the scenes remind me of the 1992 Los Angeles riots--which occurred 9 months before this. What a Whiskey Tango Foxtrot... This reminds me of some of the English football (or soccer) matches in the 1980s which had riots/hooliganism--look up the Celtic-Rangers 1980 riot for an example...

And what happened in 1985 where Liverpool fans rioted prior to the Champions League final vs Juventus that resulted in 39 people dying after a wall that held a section of seats at Heysel Stadium in Brussels Belgium collapsed. The sickening thing about this match is that UEFA still ordered the two teams to play it because they feared further rioting/hooliganism from Liverpool fans even though 39 people had lost their lives. Because of how bad the whole issue of hooliganism was at the time & the fact people died, UEFA instantly banned English clubs from all European competitions until England could clean up its act. It wasn't until 1991 that English clubs were allowed to compete in European competitions again.

Dallas has had bad luck with parades. When the Mavericks made the NBA Finals in 2006, the city planned the parade in advance. But when Mayor Laura Miller announced the parade route after the Mavs won Game 1 and they ended up losing the series, everyone went after Miller for "jinxing" the team - just for making sure another 1993 wouldn't happen! By contrast, when the Mavs DID win the championship in 2011, the city - which was under an interim mayor at the time - declared they weren't planning a parade AT ALL and only relented to allowing one when Mark Cuban declared he would pay for it. Given how spontaneously that must have been prepared, we're pretty lucky another such riot didn't happen.

That also happened during the Boston Marathon bombing incident back in 2013 where a pipe bomb exploded near the finish line and many of them were dead and cause injuries. Same thing happened on 9/11/01 which was the horrific day where both planes crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center were destroyed causing hundreds of deaths, and of course, the New England Patriots victory broke into a riot back in 2004 and the Denver Broncos Super Bowl victory broke into a riot back in 2007. Look at baseball during the past years. The late 1990’s where the New York Yankees won 3 straight World Series titles and a victory parade. But thankfully, there were no riots at the event. And of course, there was the 1986 World Series where the New York Mets won the World Series title and went on a victory parade with no riots or any other incidents with no arrests, same goes with the Yankees victory parade in 1996, 1998 and 1999 with no arrests.

This is very similar to what happened a couple of years ago in Argentina when Argentina won the World Cup. Like with this, the parade through the streets of Buenos Aires was poorly thought out & hastily put together a few days before. For example the city government of Buenos Aires only had 950 police officers deployed for the parade. Then during the parade itself in which 5 million people attended, all hell broke loose as fans tried to jump into the team bus that was carrying the players (which included Messi) & the coaches. Some fans even jumped from a freeway overpass onto the roof of the bus. The team was unable to finish the parade route as a result of this. Also there were clashes between fans & riot police that resulted in one death & a 5 year old being hospitalized in a coma because he sustained a head injury during the chaos. Things got so bad that the Argentine government had to deploy the military to quell the crowd.

I am glad I never hear anything bad when the Packers except it can be really cold to hold a parade, which they did in 1997 after winning Super Bowl 31 (or XXXI). There is video of that parade on RU-vid. And after the Packers won Super Bowl 45 (or XLV), there wasn't a parade but a rally in front of over 50,000 fans who braved temperatures that reached 5 degrees Fahrenheit (which is -15 degrees Celsius for myself and other Canadians or other countries that use the Metric system). I don't think there was any violence at either event. Then again, I am talking about Green Bay, a city whose population is just over 107,000 and a metro area over 320,000. Those are numbers most major NFL markets expect to attend a parade. I think I need to see another Packers victory sometime soon since I doubt I'll ever see a Maple Leafs Stanley Cup parade in my lifetime.

Well in all fairness to the politician and the violence being forgotten 2 days later this is the same general area that is still one of the most infamous places for violent action taking place at what was supposed to be, in all accounts, a joyful occasion. Just 3 letters and a guy name Ruby definitely trumps in everyone's minds what happened in '93 and not only in the Dallas/Fort Worth area but pretty much the world over. (JFK- 1963) I felt I had to include the letters especially since almost everyone under the age of 27 fail to think anything of note happened prior to their arrival to planet Earth. To this day the local authorities in Dallas still argue about exactly who or how many possible Gunmen the U.S. govt and its agencies sent to Texas to assassinate Kennedy. They probably had an argument about that exact thing day after Superbowl when wondering details on the celebration

Those teams weren't expected to, three-peat, because of the retirements of, players/coaches, and, in the case of the Dolphins, they, subsequently, broke up because an, ultimately, doomed league poached three of their best players.

I hate saying this, but maybe it’s time to end victory parades, and simply hold championship celebrations in controlled environments like stadiums? I’m watching an ad about Sandy Hook Promise after this documentary. Multiple people have been killed by assault weapons at individual parades (July 4). Think about the Las Vegas/Jason Aldean massacre. The availability of these killing machines in uncontrolled atmospheres - and the expansion of legal rights to carry them in certain states - makes it a situation where you’re asking for deaths to happen. Why do you think Super Bowls, World Cups & Olympics are military-zone security? And to those who argue “guns don’t kill people, people kill people,” a person intent on massive violence who only has access to a knife or a non-semi-automatic gun can only kill 1-2 in the few seconds before they are detained. The one with the weapon of mass murder can kill dozens. Isn’t it better to save the dozens of lives? My grandfather was a police detective. He once did security in the 60s for a circus parade where elephants were going on a downtown street. He saw someone who was going to light firecrackers under the elephants. He stopped the dude, seconds away from a mass trampling disaster. There were very few automatic & semiautomatic weapons in public availability then. There were some in Feb. 1993 for sure. There are a ton now, a lot more. Add that to a much more mentally-unhealthy society, and I think it may be time to reconsider holding major uncontrollable events anymore. Or at least innovate a new way to do them.

This is an overreaction if I've ever seen one. Victory parades are held every year in four major sports leagues and even some of the smaller leagues hold parades. This is not a regular thing that happens. There's no reason to end them, bro. You're overthinking so hard right now.

@@PredatorKingdom I’d love to be overthinking it and this not be a genuine reason for worry. But when multiple people at a July 4 event are struck by bullets shot a mile and a half away (Philadelphia), it’s no wonder the mayor of that city admits he’s always afraid of the worst whenever these mass civic gatherings happen.
